. >> reporter: jonathan ferrell was apparently looking for help after he crashed his car in a wooed neighborhoodday. he knockeded on the front door of this nearby house, but it was 2:30 the in the morning. the homeowner mistook him for a burglar and called 911. >> 911 hello. >> i need help. >> where are you at? >> there's a guy breaking in my front door. >> there's a guy breaking in your front door? >> yeah. he's trying to kick it down. >> reporter: police disguised the homeowner's voice to protect her identity. >> is he still there. >> yes. >> that's okay. i'm right here. >> officer kerrick was one of the police officers who responded. when ferrell ran toward them kerrick shot him. ferrell was unarmed. kerrick is being charged with voluntary manslaughter. his attorney is michael green. >> it will be found that officer kerrick's actions were just feeded on the night in question. >> reporter: police showed the video to fehr elise family and their lawyer chris chestnut. he approaches them and as he's walking up to them you see two red lights on his chest from a taser, and then he -- i think he goe

. >> reporter: police confirm that 24-year-old jonathan ferrell was unarmed. w, they're revealing that the former college athlete was shot by a charlotte police officer ten times. >> this is jonathan's baby. one of his -- >> reporter: his grieving mother, holding up her son's teddy bear, as she shares how much his death breaks her heart. >> it's just really -- he's gone too soon. gone too soon. >> reporter: investigators say the former safety for florida a&m had badly crashed his car when he went knocking on this door for help at 2:30 in the morning. the frightened woman inside called charlotte police. and according to their initial report, one of their officers deployed his taser at mr. ferrell but it was unsuccessful. so far, police haven't explained what that means. they do say that officer randall kerrick shot at the young black man a total of 12 times, and that the shooting was excessive. kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter. he has not entered a plea. >> i can tell you as man of color, it's frightening. it's late. it's suburbia. charlotte. the o
