"the corrections" is obviously a book i think a lot of people own. you must know that. >> yes. i see it in people's apartments. >> seth: well, that was what i was gonna say. because my wife and i when we moved in together, we each had a copy of "the corrections." so we had to decide do you keep two on the bookshelves or do just keep one? but i was wondering when you come into apartments do you check the bookshelves, do you >> yes. >> seth: yeah. >> yes. >> well, i think the recent book freedom by jonathan franzen does a really good job of illustrating the big problem, i think, in our life-- that we've essentially... because we can... we have the, quote, right to do whatever we want at any point in time, that we have lost sight of having that formula or even a criteria by which to judge how we're supposed to live. and that makes it really complicated. how are we supposed to know what we want? how are we supposed to know whether what we have chosen is what we should have chosen, what will do us well in the long run? and that at times makes us depressed. >> hinojosa: is there a sense that... the moment in history that we're living in this country right now, there is so much uncertainty about everything. >> yes. >> hinojosa: i mean, everything. and therefore... and there are so many different ways in which, you know, if you're unemployed, how are you going to do this, you know, establishing a new career. i mean, we are overwhelmed with a kind of a crisis, and then lots of possibilities. and you say that it can be depressing. >> it can be d

i love jonathan franzen. o'brien's novels are always wonderful. steele, i think she's in her 80s, her last book was just fantastic. i am amazed by the number of really fine authors that we have in this country and the number we keep producing every year. and i hate to say it, but our writing programs are really good at producing fine fiction writers. there are many more books being produced that we want to review than we have room for. many more. i won't say that every review we run is a recommendation, but more and more i think we are turning that way because people need direction. they go into the bookstore, and it's just overwhelming, there are so many books, so they want to know, basically, you know, what should i read? and it's getting hard exercise harder, i think, to justify using our limited space to tell people here's a book you've never heard of, don't read it. there's no danger of them finding that book anyhow. so i tend to -- i don't want a lot of pans in the paper unless there are very big name books that i feel like i can save people
