chief correspondent jonathan hunt is live in mexico city. good evening, jonathan. >> bret, there is an eerie silence in the southern suburb of mexico city. the hardest hit by that devastating quake. behind me is one of the staging posts for some of the thousands of official search and rescue workers and thousands upon thousands of ordinary mix -- mexican civilians and what president enrique pena nieto says is an urgent message. finding those who may have survived some of the 40 or so buildings that collapsed. we were outside one today. it was a five-story apartment building. it's now pancake down into about two stories. 40 apartments in there. a desperate search for those who may have survived. where we are standing right now, where just about half mile from the elementary school which collapsed. there's a desperate search going on there. a couple dozen children believed to still be missing. we have heard some of those children have sent text messages. parents have received them. how long they can survive is the most urgent question that fac

she corresponded jonathan hunt is live in mexico city. jonathan, a lot of conversation and disagreement about whether there are children or at least one child who was alive inside that school. what is going on? >> yeah, that has been moved on from now, really, harris. that was a story yesterday today. rescue efforts taking place across mexico city, including a very intense one here in what was a four story textile factory in the center of the city. what you are looking at now is hundreds of rescue workers digging down into the basement of that factory. there are still eight women workers who they believe are unaccounted for. they are obviously hoping against hope that they might 51 or more of those surviving in the basement here. this is a very, very intense church, it's been going on by hand using nothing more than sledgehammers and a crane to lift up bigger pieces of concrete. we understand right at this moment, there are two dogs down in the basement searching for any signs of life. but we are, as you said, approaching the 72 hour mark.

jonathan hunt joins us from mexico city. jonathan?> reporter: sandra, the end of the search and rescue operations is, of course, at some point inevitable, but earlier reports that they would be formally ended by the government on thursday are now being ruled out. we just got off the phone with the head of the civil protection agency here, which is coordinating the kind of search and rescue effort you see behind me. he said there is no artificial deadline. they will search until they believe there is no point in continuing that search. meantime, obviously, so many people in mexico city have been made homeless by this tragedy. many of them young children now in shelter, the government providing what help they can. the people of mexico city also coming together in a quite extraordinary way to offer whatever help they can as civilian volunteers. and to end this, sandra, on an optimistic note, the kind of note that makes everybody, even here in mexico city in the midst of this tragedy smile, there was a sign of life last night. a small pup

jonathan hunt reports. >> this is the scene of an entrance search and rescue in central mexico city. the teams pulling out rubble as they searched desperately for anybody who could still be alive beneath what once was a four-story textile factory. yesterday a man was pulled alive from the site. they believe there may be as many as eight women still trapped in the rubble. a short time ago one of the dogs working in this operation detected signs of life. this is a very intense search, similar operations are ongoing around the city in office buildings that collapsed. of course as well as at that school in the southern part of mexico city. these are remaining rescue operations at the moment but workers will always tell you that they believe the maximum amount of time anybody could survive in this kind of situation is about four days. we are now three days since the earthquake hit so this is quite literally a race against time. in mexico city jonathan hunt foxnews. >> military personnel from travis air force base in fairfield have been loading aircraft to help victims of the mexican quake

jonathan hunt is in mexico city with the latest. reporter: we are standing in front of what is the only remaining official search and rescue operation in mexico city. we are in the heart of the city itself. behind me is what was once a 6-story office building. there is a huge pile of rubble. there is the faintest of hope they have might find a survivor there. the teams have been going in. the media kept back for obvious reasons. but we have video showing those rescuers at work close up. on the top of the rubble, the highly skilled experienced teams picking delight. then you haved the human exphaints of workers who take bucket after bucket of debris from the scene as they slowly pull away the layers of the onion. among the teams up there is a u.s. team. the los angeles county fire department urban search and rescue team. i caught up with the team leader chief dennis croft, and he told me to one is willing to give up yet. >> the will of somebody to live outweighs everything else. a human being can survive for a number of days, especia

our chief correspondent, jonathan hunt is live at the school. jonathan? >> shep, it's a very tense scene here at the school right now. the school is about 50 yards or so behind me. it's a hive of activity and remains so. rubble being brought out from the scene, loaded on to the trucks you can see here. as we come left and down a bit, you can see the supply tents. these are set up to support the rescue workers in their hundreds if not thousands of volunteer civilians doing what they can do help in this very intense rescue effort, shep. we have been getting conflicting reports all day as you just pointed out about whether or not there may be any survivors underneath the rubble of that school and whether, if there are, they are children or adults. the latest as you said from the associated press, hearing from the mexican navy, which is one of the institutions involved in the rescue effort, that they do not believe there are any surviving children. they do believe there may be an adult alive. we have heard directly from our sources closer in to the school tha

jonathan hunt joins us from mexico city with more.ng sense of sadness and resignation is beginning to hang over this site where the families of the missing have been waiting for more than a week now for word of their loved ones. they have been here day and night ever since that 7.1 earthquake hit. whole families just waiting for news. and posted up here a list of those who are still listed as missing. then as we go past what has become a tent city here, you can see up beyond the last of these tents the rescue site itself. the search and rescue operation going on on top of that collapsed office building. in the past 24 hours we've seen the pace of that search and rescue operation slow considerably and the mexican government has announced that it will not go on much longer. just about another 48 hours. they say that on thursday, this will cease to be a search and rescue operation and it will formally become merely a recovery operation. and then the rebuilding of mexico city, healing the physical scars will take time and will take money.

our jonathan hunt joins us now by phone from mexico city. nathan, the search at the school, the world focused on this. so many live pictures we're able to watch this. >> reporter: we're about 60 yards from that collapsed school, harris. it is a very, very intense scene. this desperate search plays out. a 12-year-old girl wiggled her fingers when asked to by rescuers in the early hours of this morning. ever since then they have been trying to reach her. it is an extremely dangerous job for them. consistently the rubble begins to move beneath their feet. obviously they don't want to risk the lives of any rescuers either. it is a delicate, painstaking process. take a look what is happening up close. directly ahead of us is the collapsed school. it is a constant hive of activity here, as hundreds of rescue workers continue to desperate search for any children who may have survived and be trapped beneath the rubble of that school. as you can see, supplies are constantly being brought in and the workers are constantly digging away as carefully as t
