our chief correspondent jonathan hunt is right now flying along the cape fear river in a black hawk helicopterblack hawk helicopter with customs and border protection air and marine agents. two pilots up front. four rescue specialists in the back here with us. and as we look out now, we are very near the small town pretty much a direct shot up the i-40 north of wilmington. and as you can see, there is some very severe flooding here. as you look out there, you see a church almost flooded up to the roof and homes around it in water standing all the way up to the roof of some of them. this is a scene that we have seen repeated again and again as we have flown across this region today, shep, with these customs and border protection agents. we have not seen anybody in need of rescue so far today. but, yesterday, these agents did, in fact, rescue a man, a woman and their dog from a boat that they were stuck on. right now, this is a continued search operation. you mentioned that in all, some 2,600 people have been rescued in the days since hurricane florence hit. those rescues will continue, although

jonathan hunt on the ground in south carolina where they are starting to get some of this, the brunt of this as well. the head of the coast guard is joining us on the massive rescue operation they have underway but we begin with chief meteorologist rick reichmuth who is here with the forecast and what to expect. >> rick: we have a long ways to go with the storm. some of the impacts are lessening. the winds are coming down, strongest winds, which is good news. but they were extreme. look at the numbers. 106 miles per hour was recorded at cape lookout. 105 in wilmington close to where it came on shore. those are the places where there is a station to read a reading like that. who knows other stronger winds could be in places in between that. you get an idea of the storm now. this is organized and they are saying how amazed they are with how organized it is holding together. it has plenty of moisture around it. the wind is still going offshore in myrtle beach. so you are not getting the storm surge. where you got the storm surge to the right of where it came ashore, east of wilmington t

and our correspondent, jonathan hunt, is down in myrtle beach, south carolina. e original thinking was this storm might hug the coast and stay over water, jonathan, which would have been bad for you guys. now it's moving west and inland, which is good for you guys. >> yeah, that westward track is very good news, shep. and when you look at that combined with the conditions that our colleague steve harrigan and griff jenkins have been dealing with up in north carolina, you think that my goodness the good people of coastal south carolina may indeed have dodged a bullet here. that's not to say it isn't bad. that's not to say it couldn't get worse. we have just gone through high tide as you heard officials at the hurricane center saying. this is now retreating. that is good news. we have another high tide due here at midnight. and with the hour upon hour upon hour of rain we're supposed to get until then, obviously flooding is still a major concern. now, we can't spin our camera around quite far enough, shep, because we are protecting our equipment behind the concrete

but first, let's go to jonathan hunt who is live near hartsville, south carolina. jonathan?e in south carolina at the moment but we are in route to charlotte north carolina because that is exactly where florence is heading. in fact the north carolina emergency management team tweeted just over an hour ago, head's up charlotte, florence is coming your way. and it is coming with a vengeance. we've been driving along these roads. it is about a three hour drive from where we started off this morning towards charlotte. i can tell you, parts of the drive were a little short of terrifying. the rains are coming down in waves. flash floods are popping up everywhere. as you drive along the streets, highways of south carolina and many homes as we passed, we could see were already flooded. because the rainfall is showing no signs of stopping right now, the rivers are going to continue to rise. they will continue to be flash floods. that is why so many thousands of national guard troops are on duty both in north and south carolina. helping out. we saw some near conway south carolina earl

we begin with jonathan hunt in raleigh. jonathan?p land in south carolina after a helicopter ride from here in north carolina. it really is the only way to get a sense of just how widespread the devastation is and how much damage has been done. we took a similar ride in a rescue helicopter take a look. we are on board a black hawk helicopter are customs and border protection air and marine agents. and as we look outside right now have the vantage point of this chopper, you can see just how bad the flooding is we have two pilots up front by the way. four rescue specialists in the back here with us. what they are doing right now is a search and rescue mission. we are essentially going across the entire region north of wilmington, checking out all of the houses that you see below us that are so badly flooded, making sure that nobody is left in there in need of help. we have also seen rescue boats out on the water. they are going house to house. they are checking the you were floors and attics to make sure that nobody has been left behin

jonathan hunt is in north myrtle beach. jonathan? >> shep, far better situation here in south carolina than it is for steve harrigan and the rest of the residents of north carolina. southern carolina may indeed have dodged a bullet. the storm surge that had been talked about doesn't look now as though it will happen. the reason for that, shep, we ended up at the bottom end of the hurricane storm as you look at it on a map. that meant the wins for the time they are coming through here at their height were pushing off shore, in other words going from land onto the ocean and literally pushing the ocean back. so that prevents a storm surge. we did get minor damage from the wind gusts that we had here. we've seen a bunch of trees down in the area, caught a little bit of damage on a couple of homes that you see along the beachfront here, but no major damage whatsoever. coastal south carolina is one thing. inland south carolina could yet be another. this rain that we see coming down still very hard here is predicted to last for at least ano

jonathan hunt live in new salem where it happened. jonathan, what do you have on that? town of monroe in north carolina and over the past 18 hours that terrible tragedy has unfolded here. a mother was driving with her 1-year-old son this direction along north carolina 218 which is what this road is and this creek you see beyond us still flowing very quickly indeed, at that point was raging. the rivers of water coming right across this road. as you go slightly to the left here you can see where it even swept out a part of the road. the woman's car got swept off the road itself. she got out. she was trying to get her 1-year-old son kaden out of his car seat. she did that but he slipped from her grasp and was swept away by those raging waters. bill, just in the last few minutes i can tell you that the coroner's van has left this scene literally two minutes ago with the body of 1-year-old kaden lee welsh inside. a tragic story, bill, a story of a mother desperately trying to get to safety but in her desperation, driving directly into danger and as a result, losing her 1-yea
