abc's chief washington correspondent jonathan karl leads us off. >> reporter: allen weisselberg, a man who spent nearly a half century as a top executive in the company where donald trump made his fortune and fame, was brought into court in handcuffs. weisselberg is the trump organization's chief financial officer. >> replacing george this week is my chief financial officer, allen weisselberg. and you think george iwait u y d weisselberg and the trump organization of compensating top executives off the books so the businesses and executives would pay less in taxes. weisselberg is accused of avoiding taxes on $1.7 million in fringe benefits over the past 15 years. including a rent-free apartment in manhattan, two her day cease benz automobiles for him and his wife. and private school tuition for their two children. the tuition, the indictment says, was paid by personal checks drawn on the account of and signed by donald j. trump. weisselberg pleaded not guilty. as for donald trump, he says the entire two-year investigation is politically motivated. >> it's a disgusting thing. it's very

here's our chief washington correspondent jonathan karl tonight. >> reporter: in the days after the november election, the nation's top military officer feared donald trump would try to stage a coup to stay in power. in their new book, "i alone can fix it", "washington post" reporters phil rucker and carol leonnig write that joint chiefs chairman mark milley was so concerned, he called trump's former national security adviser h.r. mcmaster and asked, "what the f am i dealing with?" according to the book, as milley watched donald trump speak on january 6th, he saw echoes of adolf hitler. >> we fight like hell. and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore. >> reporter: milley, the authors write, told aids, "this is a reichstag moment. the gospel of the fuhrer." that was a reference to the burning of the german parliament in 1933, that helped hitler and the nazis seize power. general milley also saw parallels between the nazis and trump and his supporters in the immediate aftermath of the election, when trump refused to acknowledge he lost. >> frankly, we did win

bill barr sat down for an interview with jonathan karl and explained that, when it came to election fraudall ( bleep )." and bill barr should know, he spent the last two years with his lips very close to that bull's ass. ( laughter ) barr said-- barr said-- ( applause ) barr said that he was urged to speak out by senate minority leader and little boy who will not open his mouth for the airplane-- mitch mcconnell. mcconnell would have spoken the truth himself last december, but he needed the former president's help to ensure that the g.o.p. won the two runoff elections in georgia, which they lost. ( cheers and applause ) in the end, mitch mcconnell sold his soul for nothing. so, a pretty fair price. ( laughter ) america has moved on. we've got a shiny new president, who might be building some shiny, new roads. because last week, joe biden reached a deal with a bipartisan group of senators on a $974 billion infrastructure proposal. their previous disagreements are now water under the bridge. or over the bridge, the bridges are falling down at this point. now that they've reached a deal, tho

i mean, it wasn't enough, because as described in i think jonathan karl's excerpt which covers some of same material, it wasn't enough for trump because trump -- barr didn't, at the end of the day, engage in litigation on behalf of the fake election fraud claims. he didn't indict hunter biden. he didn't issue the durham report. he didn't indict jim comey. nothing was ever enough for donald trump. and the reason why it got so out of hand was, you know, people didn't push back at the interim steps. they acceded to some of his desires and wishes in certain ways, and barr was the biggest -- one of the biggest people humoring trump. and it just gets worse and worse and worse. and that's what happened. that's why i said just a moment ago, i wish mike pence had pushed back a little more. but then again, you know, he wouldn't be renominated in 2020, and that's the risk he was pushing. and with barr, he runs the risk of being fired. that was sort of the moral of the story in a lot of ways about the trump administration, is that people were more concerned about their jobs than about principle an
