i can't -- >> reporter: a tear gently rolls down jonathan lambert's cheek as he recalls the horror he witnessed in these woods. a teen sexually assaulted a girl on the other side of this crime scene tape. >> this happened a block from my home. a 10-year-old girl about to be raped. >> reporter: the girl was walk home after school on scottish avenue around 5:00 on thursday. suddenly the teen grabbed her, dragged her into the woods across the street and sexually assaulted her. that's when jonathan heard the girl screaming and ran into the woods to help. >> just the fact that he -- a young african-american male would do this to a 10-year-old girl coming home from her education kills me inside. >> reporter: you can see the crime scene over there. lambert says that the suspect got scared and ran through this brush over here. he tried to chase him but he got away. >> at that point i got caught in a tree and he came out on scottish avenue and i lost his trail from there. >> reporter: police are on the trail and on alert. >> we will continue to do our job, continue to step up patrol and search
