the show that remembers when august used to have slow news days i'm jonathan lemire on this tuesday, august 17th. we'll start with the news. we begin with the chaotic scenes coming out of kabul's international airport where tens of thousands of afghans surrounded planes in an desperate attempt to escape taliban control. richard engel has the latest from kabul. >> reporter: tens of thousands of afghans swarmed into kabul airport, desperate to leave at any price. they burst through security. climbed over walls. and spilled onto the tarmac. searching for any airplane that would take them far away from afghanistan. away from the taliban. so many managed to cram into one plane, the pilot refused to take off. people on board refused to disembark. but it was across a barb wire divide where it turned really ugly. on the military side of the airport, american troops trying to evacuate u.s. embassy staff found themselves overwhelmed, suddenly battling crowds, firing warning shots. this was not the mission they came for. the pentagon says u.s. troops shot dead two armed afghans. but still the c

jonathan lemire, white house reporter for associated press, and adrian emrod. know about you guys, but i feel like vacation could be an incentive to wrap things up and move on. i know they like their vacations there. let's talk about the obstacles, haggerty being one of them it seems. he kind of raised his hand when it came to the cbo report. do you expect any other obstacles ahead as they try to get to this vote on infrastructure? >> well, yeah, yasmin, i'm waiting to see how long it takes for senator haggerty's team to send out a fundraising e-mail with a clip of him from the floor. look, we may see a few other, you know, bumps along the road, but what really matters is this vote that took place today. 67 senators, a bipartisan group of senators, voted to move forward with debate. of course, senator cornyn, senator deb fischer, two senators who flipped and ended up supporting this bill. why? because people want infrastructure. members of congress love to go back home and talk about the revenue for bridges that they funded, talk about the water systems that th

. >> anna palm, jonathan lemire, thanks to the both of you.ring in democratic california congressman ro khanna who served as the deputy whip of the progressive caucus. you heard my colleagues talking about what it's going to take. we are lucky enough to hear from somebody from the progressive caucus. what do you make of the blueprint of the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill put forward by senate democrats and are there things you would like to see in the plan that are currently not included? >> the $3.5 trillion is a compromise with progressives and it's an extraordinarily strong bill. it's going to mean child care for every working american in this country. it's going to mean expanded medicare benefits. now you'll have dental and hearing and your eyeglasses actually covered. it's going to mean pre-vocational education and community college and it's something we can afford. when you look at the spending, first of all, two points that we have to make. it's over ten years. that means it's only less than a 5% increase in actual spending. we're go

. >>> let's bring in white house reporter for the associated press, jonathan lemire. and former aid for the george w. bush state department, elise jordan. we should start with you. at this time yesterday you were extremely upset, worried about loved ones, friends who were at the kabul airport. what is the update? i know you have been tweeting updates on the people you know there. what can you tell us about the latest you're hearing from on the ground? >> mika, it's horrible. we completely mishandled and bundled the treatment of our allies and left so many men and women who kept americans alive and welcomed us into their country, we left them in the lurch. and so, there was such a sudden, mad dash to try to get on a flight, any flight, even without a visa, that the kabul commercial airport just became absolute chaos. as you saw from the images. and so i had friends who made it there, thought they were on a flight, thought they were finally safe because the airport certainly it was assumed had to be a safe place because so many embassies had evacuated there. and then th

let's bring in white house reporter for the associated press jonathan lemire and jackie, author of thetter at "the washington post." >> jonathan, victory lap, i told you so, i can still do big things with republicans. what is the mood at the white house? >> the news is exultant on the infrastructure bill even though of course there are real concerns and the president said this today about the continuing rise in coronavirus infections across the nation. but on this, this was a victory lap and it was i told you so. in fact president biden even talked about press clippings he had found when he took office. he went back and looked and people were very skeptical, he said, of his ability to get this done. so he was crowing a little bit about that. it's an undeniable victory. it's a huge win for him. it validates his faith in being able to work across the aisle and get something done. he campaigned on that, he has governed on that. there are many moments in the last six plus months where it didn't look like this day would come and he faced opposition from republicans and democrats alike. demo

joining us now jonathan lemire for the associated press and msnbc contributor. also with us greg, npr national security correspondent, covering afghanistan since 1993. he was one of the first reporters to interview members of the taliban. and evelyn farkas is back, an msnbc contributor. greg, officials believe another terror attack is likely. are you getting any sense from officials that changes the nature of the mission? >> well, they're saying it hasn't. they're saying they're still going to -- they're still processing people. that's going to continue until the final minute. that's the intention. i have not seen video or images from the perimeter and particularly the abbey gate where the days leading up to the attack you saw the marines really wading out to the crowd and just gut wrenching to see those images especially after we know what happened. i'm not clear on how close the u.s. military is getting to the people that are still coming to the airport but that processing is still going on. flights are still taking off. >> jonathan, the white house press brie

. >> jonathan lemire sent in a sentence. the boston red sox sashayed in another tragic loss.m curious about the bill that all democrats voted. for is that the prelude to the reconciliation bill? >> that is the prelude to the reconciliation bill and this is the bill that president biden laid out and said this is the human infrastructure bill. that is the bill dealing with climate change, dealing with communities that have been hurt by when highways cut through a lot of african-american and communities of color, it also deals with giving money for children, giving money for health care workers. so in that bill it's really the bill that president biden said is investing money in american life and in ways that we should be looking at infrastructure as a wider idea past just roads and bridges. he says this is a 21st century infrastructure bill. this is the bill that republicans unanimously voted against. it's the bill that republicans say proves that democrats are, quote unquote, as one senator said last night in the middle of the night spending money like sailors. that being said
