let's check in with jonathan martin in alabama.overnor said this time around his state is going to make a difference. so what kind of turnout is expected in vermont and who is leading? >> so far the governor and some of the other elected officials are predicting a 40% voter turnout here in alabama which is fairly significant, when you consider there are not a lot of other issues drawing voters to the polls. they are now voting on super-tuesday with a lot of these other states. in the past alabama has voted a week after super-tuesday, so they feel because they moved this primary up, they have gotten more attention. the candidates have spent more time and money here. so we'll see what happens. donald trump still out with a pretty commanding lead. 42% is where he is polling. so the thing to watch here in alabama and some of these southern states will be who will come in second and who will come in third. marco rubio and ted cruz neck and neck in alabama and some of these southern states. and on the republican side, hillary clinton, re

jonathan martin is live for us there.bama's governor has said that the state will take a difference this time around. so what kind of a turn out are we talking about? and who is leading? >> reporter: yes, alabama is expected to play a bigger role in this year's primary. in past super-tuesday's alabama typically voted after super-tuesday a week after. but their legislature voted to vote with the rest of the states, so that's why they are a bigger player. you see a lot of candidates spending time and money here, and there is expected to be a 40% turnout, which is high, considering there are not a lot of big statewide races on the ballot. donald trump continues to have a pretty sizable lead in most of the polls. the latest shows him at around 42%. so the forry line is not who will win but who will come in second place. so they hope to win some of those congressional districts, so they can take home of delegates. and then hillary clinton polling at around 70%, a little over 70% over bernie sanders, and she has really spent so

joining me now, "the new york times" national political correspondent, jonathan martin. please react to all the events of the last 24 hours, but begin with the kasich comments. >> the kasich comments don't really surprise me. he's trying to win ohio, his home state. if he doesn't, he's not going to be able to go forward with this campaign, and he sees an opportunity to rally republicans in his state who are appalled by donald trump's campaign. and so, he's doing that by seizing on what happened last night. but let's be clear about what john kasich has done during the course of this campaign. he wants to portray himself as sort of taking the moral high ground and not going after trump. in react, he did confront trump last fall at the cnbc debate in boulder, colorado. he basically said, the party's gone berserk, these plans don't make sense, what are we doing as a party. donald trump smacked him back pretty hard, and i think kasich at that point decided it was not wise from a tablctical standpoi to attack donald trump, so he hasn't done that since, but that's for the purpo

and aljazeera's jonathan martin is live for us in jackson, mississippi. what kind of a turnout have we been seeing there today? >> it's good to see you as well, tony, and so far a lot of the precincts here in mississippi have been reporting a low turnout. when the polls close in about an hour, also worth watching tonight, we'll see if donald trump can continue his sweep of the deep south. on tuesday, he was able to do well in states like georgia, alabama and arkansas, he won but not by a big margin louisiana. so the support is still strong. ted cruz's campaign believes that mississippi's governor, we'll see how the numbers add up, and as david schuster said on the democratic side, it shows that hillary clinton is a sure shot to win mississippi. she has a lot of support. but she has not campaigned big, and neither has bernie sanders. her husband was here as a sugar at. so it looks like she will do well with a strong base of african-american voters, tony. >> and jonathan, there's a new federal lawsuit challenging the use of the use of the mississippi state
