jonathan reiner and matthew dowd back with me now.night we spoke about cnn's reporting about how some americans didn't want to take the vaccine because they don't trust government. is there enough here to compel them to overcome that distrust? >> well, i think we're -- it almost doesn't matter whether they trust the government. we're basically -- the government is basically creating a tool that gives some people no choice. or gives them the choice to either quit their job or get the vaccine. but we're at a point -- really, past the point in the pandemic -- where either you're part of the solution or you're part of the problem. and the problem right now is that we have 25% of our adults, or as you said, almost 80 million americans, who are unvaccinated and we have to fix that problem. and if we can't bribe them and if we can't cajole them, then we need these other tough -- tough measures to get folks to understand that they have to get vaccinated. so whether -- whether they have faith in the government or whether they just want to pres

jonathan reiner, cnn medical analyst, professor at george washington university. gentlemen, welcome, and professor, let me start with you and these threats to challenge this in the courts. the basic legal authority outline it for us, the white house obviously believes they have it and most legal experts i've heard from believe he has it too. >> yeah, i think president biden is on rock solid legal ground as the head -- as the chief executive of the entire federal workforce, just like any employer, he can require federal workers and contractors to abide by safety standards. he can also reach deep into the private sector beyond the federal government as he's doing because he's got specific authorization from congress to do it. the occupational health and safety act was passed in 1970, specifically to give the president the power through the department of labor to set health and safety standards, and clearly getting a vaccine is necessary to protect the health and safety of workers, every bit as much as preventing a workplace injury. and then finally, he's requiring i

jonathan reiner, great to see you as always.americans expect a booster shot this fall or not? >> yes, they should expect a booster shot. we've seen a pretty clear cut decline in the efficacy of our vaccines in terms of preventing infection. the efficacy in terms of preventing severe infection se seems to be holding, but there is some data from outside the united states, particularly israel, that suggests that with time that too will occur, which has really prompted this move to try and boost or, as dr. fauci said, administer a third shot to most of the country. the problem is that most of the data comes out of israel. we don't have any of this data in the united states, so we're relying on the israeli data, and the "new york times" has reported that the fda is still waiting to get some of the raw data from israel. so that's number one. the second problem is that most of the data is with the pfizer vaccine, but yet, about half the country has received either the moderna vaccine and about 15% of the country has received the j&j va

jonathan reiner, good to see you. the fda voted to recommend covid vaccines for 65 and older, those at high risk. what about the boosters for most americans? what happened? >> we didn't have the data. one of the things that really struck me about today and many of us were predicting that the fda committee would do exactly what they did today, which was approve it for older americans and maybe health care workers. i think it's worded in a way that will include health care workers. what struck me today was really how bad the messaging has been coming from the administration recently and how badly this administration misses andy slavitt. the president of the united states over the summer came out with a lot of fanfare and told the united states that essentially all americans over the age of 16 would start getting boosted come this monday. whatever group advised the president to make this big announcement really got way out ahead of their skis and the person that took the big hit was the president of the united states. i

jonathan reiner, the director of the cardiac catheterization program at george washington universityat "the view." they clearly have a protocol and the vice president didn't interact with them but this shows how important testing is. it was a near miss. >> right. well, i'm not sure what to make of this because i think we might even learn more about this tomorrow. this is really unusual for two reasons. first of all, these antigen tests are pretty specific and they can miss a positive test in somebody with low levels of antigen maybe presymptomatic or asymptomatic, in people who are contagious or when someone is testing positive, usually that test is pretty reliable. secondly, it would really be up usual to have two false positive tests simultaneously in the same place on two different people. so there is something very odd about this story but i do think overall the bigger story is businesses around the united states do not utilize testing nearly enough, and our schools do not utilize testing nearly enough. there is an opportunity for instance, to keep schools open if we test our kid

jonathan reiner joins us. you heard brian reluctantly admit to getting the vaccine. one feels like they can trust the government. and waylon feels like trump was shafted because officials kept the vaccine from him, knowing he would be reelected. is there any surprise where this vaccine hesitancy comes from? >> no. and i think we've missed the mark in so many ways in terms of educating the public, and allowing our vaccination program to be so politicized. from the very outset, we should have had a bipartisan, nonpartisan program where leaders from both sides of the aisle on the federal level, on the state and local levels, vigorously promote vaccines in their communities. so folks weren't just hearing it starting at the end of january from democrats. they were hearing it from both sides, a coordinated program to do this. and we didn't do that. so vaccines became a democratic program, even though it was developed by the republican administration of donald trump. so -- and that just seeded mistrust amongst the people who already had mistrust of vaccines. so we have a bi

jonathan reiner and cnn political commentator ana navarro. good evening to both of you. doctor, let's start with you. this finding from the fda that boosters have a limited benefit comes at the same time that a small study shows that the booster doses of moderna's vaccine increase immunity safely. what do you think is going on here? >> don, we're seeing a bit of a food fight playing out publicly within the fda right now. so today, two departing leaders of the office that will be reviewing the administration's plan to administer boosters to the public, drs. gruber and krauss, co-authored a paper in the british journal "lancet" in which they argued against boosters. they are publicly showing their disagreement with the administration's plan. this is what we know. we know that if you are immunocompromised, you are much less likely to have a durable benefit from just two shots and you should get a booster, you are approved to get a booster right now. then there is the issue of what to do with the rest of the population who may have been vaccinated several months ago, let's s

jonathan reiner, director of the cardiac catheterization program at george washington university hospitalgood to see you. this is the fifth week in a row that the american academy of pediatrics is reporting more than 200,000 new cases in children. so why is pfizer waiting a few weeks to seek an emergency use authorization for their vaccine? >> good evening, don. i think the most likely answer is that they want to get a little bit of feedback from the fda. so, they have submitted data to the fda, and the data set is quite large. this is a new vaccine for children, and it's a vaccine at a different dose dthan used for adolescents and adult. there is a lot of safety and efficacy data has to be processed. my guess is they want to make sure they get it right. we know that prior application for the eua for adolescents bass processed after about a month by the fda. so it's going to be a few weeks after the company submits the eua before the shots are available for kids. so my guess is that we are going to be into november before we see this for children. >> when this vaccine is authorized it wou

jonathan reiner from georgia washington university. dr. reiner, always good to see you. just your initial take, full disclosure mother of an 11-year-old, anxious a will waiting. there's a risk benefit analysis once they apply for emergency use authorization. can you imagine a scenario based on what we do know publicly where this would not get that emergency use authorization for kids 5 to 11? >> good morning, erica. the answer is no. the benefit side, right now the united states is seeing about a quarter of a million new cases in children every week. that represents about a 240% increase since the middle of the summer. so an enormous number of children are getting sick. apparently the devil is in the details. the clinical trial data from pfizer suggests that the reduced dose vaccine in kids 5 to 11 was very well tolerated. so unless there's some unexpected safety signal that pfizer hasn't disclosed now and no reason to expect that is the case, this will be approved for children in that age group. the challenge is going to be to get it into kids' arms, and you know, for m

jonathan reiner. he advised the white house medical team under president george w. bush. dr.er, i think, very well. it's like a summary of 18 months into this pandemic, we're averaging 170,000 new infections per day, 14,000 deaths still, and people are still arguing over masks. what do you even say to this now? >> it was fatally politicized early on in the pandemic when at that time the president of the united states refused to wear a mask in public for months. >> i'm waiting for people to move past that point, right? >> we're looking for a return to common sense in the united states. these are the facts. we're fighting a respiratory pathogen. kids can get this virus as avidly as adults. in fact, almost a quarter of all new infections now are in children because many adults are vaccinated. kids can spread this virus as avidly as adults. we know that clearly. we also know that masks will prevent or dramatically reduce both the acquisition of this virus by the wear and the transmission, and the better the mask you wear, the better the reduction is. it's not that complicated. it

jonathan reiner. if that application goes through this week, how soon could we see authorization?ot weeks or weeks, not days? >> if the eua application goes in this week, i would say it will go to committee probably sometime by the end of october. but it has to go through two committees. it has to go through the fda's vrbac committee and it will have to go over to asip over in cdc. there's a lot to talk about. this is a vaccine for children, so getting the dose right in terms of both efficacy and side effects is crucial. and this is not the same dose of the pfizer vaccine that i got. this is a reduced dose vaccine, so there's a lot of data for the fda and cdc to look at. >> and what do we do to help parents overcome reluctance to get their kids this vaccine because now we're talking about younger children. >> yeah. >> so parents of course will be concerned about that. obviously we're going to get into a conversation about whether mandates are appropriate and so on. i can't imagine that we would get to that point, but what are your thoughts? >> well, look, parents are accustomed to

jonathan reiner. you have advocated for these mandates for a while now.istration potentially going a little further. left in the vaccine gun is to ban travel by unvaccinated people. again, remember flying on an airplane remains a hazard. no one knows the vaccination status of any of the fellow passengers. and it's a privilege to travel. and we can't travel without an i.d. you have to follow certain rules. turn off your cell phone. and there is a no-fly list. and i think we're -- we can potentially get to the point where the administration will require vaccination status, verified vaccination status for every air passenger in the united states. that's how you get us over the top. because you have to sort of jar people out of this sort of contrarian mode, the -- that people are in right now. essentially. >> right. there are two reasons to ban air travel by unvaccinated people. one is the obvious incentive to get people -- to get people big incentive before the holiday season. and the other is this is how the virus travels around the united states through un

why they didn't go further, the biggest proposal that i've heard from people like our colleague jonathan reiner, who you have on your show a lot, the doctor who has said that he should have mandated air travelers be vaccinated. the white house says they didn't do that because they think it would jam up airports, impede the economic recovery without doing all that much to improve vaccinations because a high proportion of air travelers are already vaccinated and all that much covid is not spread because of good air filtration systems on planes. in terms of how it's going to work, what joe biden is counting on here is the threat of fines on businesses applied through osha, the occupational safety and health administration, to impose vaccine mandates on large businesses, affecting tens of millions of workers. they're also counting on the fact that business itself wants to have the cover to impose some of these mandates. business roundtable came out tonight saying we support what the administration is doing. we've got to get aggressive in order to get on top of this. finally they're counting on mobi
