national political reporter for axios, jonathan swan. catty kay, and coauthor of the political play book, jake sherman. thank you all for being here tonight. i want to focus our conversation here at the beginning of the show on just what, if anything, could possibly happen. jake sherman, this issue is particularly difficult in the house of representatives where the speaker faces a choice about whether or not to put the most likely of these in congress. and feel free to disagree with me, but it seems this fix nix bill that would have made changes to the shooting that happened in sutherland springs could potentially be a st. louis. the house has already passed it but they're demanding other things, concessions to the national rifle association. is there anything that will get done in congress? >> first of all, most of the people i talk to don't believe there is a legislative solution. most republicans. there is a split. there are conservatives in the house who say this is a tipping point. i think if anything happens -- and again, far from

jonathan swan, national political reporter for axios. we also have harry lit man, deputy assistant attorney general in the clinton administration and a former u.s. attorney. let me start with you, ashley parker, and let me ask you what your understanding is right now about whether or not there are negotiations, whether or not this nunes memo which has gone to the white house now, which the president has now read, whether they are in the process of redacting the sorts of things that give the fbi grave concern. >> so, my understanding is from conversations just recently that a number of things are incredibly up in the air, including what concerns will and will not be addressed, the timing of when the memo will actually be released. but the one thing that is clear and i think is important to remember is that this memo almost certainly will be released and that this in many ways was a preore daned conclusion. my understanding is the president first saw the memo wednesday afternoon when john kelly walked it into the oval office to hand to him

one other bit of jonathan swan, thank you for coming in to join us. of news coming out of washington, the new york times reporting that there is a debate amongst the president's advisers and lawyers are bad whether he should sit down with their special counsel, the president has said that he would like to do so, a p pa re ntly said that he would like to do so, apparently some of his advisers and lawyers are more cautious because the president has a tendency to go backwards and forwards on particular issues and stories and how things actually occurred. we will see how that pans out. let us go back to the top story and the financial markets. the president has not been shy about taking credit for a booming economy, he has treated more than 60 times about the stock market. last august he said that business was looking better than ever, stock market at an all—time high, that does notjust happen. how about this? this is from january, president trump is not getting the credit he deserves for the economy, tax cut bonuses for more than 2 million workers, most

. >> bill: jonathan swan, national political reporter for axios. we watched this briefing yesterday. 80% of the questions were about rob porter. on a day when the white house put out a wish list for a $4 trillion budget. how does the white house put the porter issue behind it or just take the beating? >> the problem is they haven't explained how -- you laid it out perfectly in that segment there. the f.b.i. knew about this in january of last year. i was talking to one person, one former white house official, republican who has been hefsh h*efshly involved he said if the f.b.i. is good thing at one thing it is covering their posterior. the idea that the f.b.i. didn't tell anybody in the white house counsel's about it with a high priority for security clearance, it is impossible to fathom that nobody in that white house counsel's office knew about it until november when we're told john kelly was informed partially about these issues. so they haven't actually said who knew what and when. reporters will keep investigating on that. >> bill: another matt

let's go to jonathan swan now for axios. great to be here.ou. >> thanks for having me. >> shepard: in the grand scheme of things, where is this investigation based on your report something. >> there's two parts to the investigation. we often forget about the second part, the criminal side and the counter intelligence side. what we hear about day to day in washington and look at our own fault as washington reporters, the limits of our sources. we've taken to people that have spoken with mueller. so we get their perspective. the mueller team is not leaking. but there's this other part of the investigation to which -- you pointed this out in your intro. we don't have much visibility. so we see these revelations with 13 russian names. you haven't seen a single one of them mentioned or teased or forecast in the press. nobody talked about george papadopoulos. so we can see the white house interviews seem to be coming towards an end. but i much point out, a later end than trump's lawyers suggested. we don't know because there's a counter intelligenc

one of the reporters for axios was on special report last night jonathan swan, crack white house reporterhe talked about the fact this could be a nixon to china moment in the sense that somebody who is a big supporter could push for some gun controls. but as jonathan said he doesn't think the president wants to go to china. in other words, he is a strong believer -- he has changed his view over the years but strong believer in the second amendment. it was one of his strongest lines on the campaign trail, full support for the right to bear arms. so whether he has any interest at all in going down that route and limiting, if not people's right to you guns, that has been settled by the supreme court court but limiting assault weapons. limiting the high-capacity magazines. there is certainly no indication of it so far. no coincidence the president never mentioned the word guns. a lot of people think it's not the problem. the problem is mental health and lack of security. that the wrong people are getting guns and we're not enforcing the laws we already have. it is like a lot of issues. you ca

brian: jonathan swan, a great story there.eir school in parkland, florida. this weekend, seven members of the majory stoneman douglas high school football team inspired by their hero coach aaron feis attended, who died last week attended the orange bowl's high school recruiting showcase. brian: players say it was what coach feis would have wanted. rob schmitt spoke to the team about the event and their coach and his legacy. rob: the definition of a hero is what i would saw about assistant coach aaron feis. he actually jumped in front of bullets trying to save lives of students at this school when this gunman opened fire in this horrific event. and over the weekend, there was a combine for football players here, a chance to get a scholarship and move on to college. these kids had a choice to make about whether or not to go out there and try to do this after the week that they had had. they made the decision the night before saying this is what coach feis would have wanted. coach feis would have been with you here today. >> coac
