jonathan vigliotti, cbs news. >> o'donnell: we turn now to a cbs news investigation.neapolis police officer derek chauvin was accused of misconduct 17 times before the death of george floyd. the complaints aren't limited to chauvin. we've uncovered a history of expressive force allegations resulting in millions of dollars in settlements. here's cbs' jeff pegues with tonight's investigation. >> reporter: in 2012, zach king was leaving a minneapolis nightclub when he was stopped by the police. he had a handgun that he was legally permitted to carry. >> he said, "hey, what's that bulge on your waist?" i show him my hands. "hey, i have a conceal and carry and that's my-- my gun, my weapon." and, like, six officers just came from out of everywhere and they got their knee on me, almost like george floyd. i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: king was hospitalized with a concussion, his face swollen with cuts and bruises. >> i didn't do anything to anybody. and i was violated. >> reporter: king sued the department, which argued he didn't tell them he had a gun permit until later.

jonathan vigliotti, cbs news. >> o'donnell: we turn now to this story. tonight, three wilmington, north carolina, police officers have been fired after a routine audit of a patrol car camera uncovered what authorities described as extremely racist comments towards african americans. here's cbs' jeff pegues. >> an internal probe by the wilmington police department reveals hate-filled conversations with three veteran officers. orficer kevin piner is heard telling corporal jessi moore that the protests would soon lead to "a civil war,' and that "he is ready." he goes on to tell moore that he was going to buy a new assault rifle soon, "we are just going to go out and start slaughtering them-- n word expletive. piner says a civil war is needed to wipe them off the expletive map. that will put them back about four or five generations. later, during a phone call with later, during a phone call with piner, moore refers to a woman t in hested as the "n" word and says, "she need a bullet in her head right then." donnie williams is the department's new police chief

here's cbs' jonathan vigliotti. >> reporter: the families of eight-year-old j.j.low and 17-year-old tylee ryan saying in a joint statement, "we are filled with unfathomable sadness that these two bright stars were stolen from us. >> mr. daybell, do you understand the allegations on both counts that have been brought against you? >> i do. >> reporter: today, their stepfather, chad daybell, sat emotionlesses as the prosecutor laid out the grisly discovery that brought him to justice. >> we are aware those remains are the remains of children. >> reporter: police, joined by the f.b.i., unearthed those remains outside his home in idaho and arrested him. he is charged with willfully destroying, altering, and/or concealing human remains. it's unclear how they died and how long the children were buried in daybell's backyard. the two children disappeared shortly before their mother, lori vallow, married daybell, a popular podcaster who believed in doomsday. vallow has been in jail since march, charged with child abandonment. daybell remained free until authorities closed i

jonathan vigliotti is in palmdale. jonathan, this story is so racially charged.rstand why there's skeptici skepticism. what can you tell us about it? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. for one, fuller's family said he never expressed suicidal thoughts. there was no apparent note found here at the scene. the sheriff's department was quick to rule this a suicide while acknowledging that their homicide team was still conducting an active investigation. then there was the second press release linking this to covid-19 without any clear evidence. you'll hear a little bit more about that in a few minutes. community leaders right now promising the public there wl be answers. jonathan vigliotti is covering this case and has been for some time. jonathan, good morning.s a movement in the direction that a lot of people feared. what more do we know about the now charges? >> reporter: yeah, good morning. we're still waiting for police and prosecutors to release more details about those charges and the human remains found in chad daybell's back yard. we should learn more in a press conference later this morning. meanwhile, daybell is being held without bond. police arrived at chad daybell's house tuesday morning with shovels and backup, 20 members of the fbi. >> investigators discovered what appeared to be unidentified human remains, and an autopsy will be conducted it. >> reporter: authorities worked carrying out a search warrant connected to the disappearance of the then-7-year-old jj and 17-year-old tylee. according to rich robertson, a private investigator hired by jj's grandparents, all the digging appeared to be in one location. >> which suggests that they have some information that led them to a specific part of the property. >> reporter: roads a

jonathan vigliotti reports. >> it was preventable.or sure. >> reporter: susan kenney is heartbroken over the newly released report detailing the missteps at the holyoke soldiers home. her father, charles lowell, was one of the home's nearly 80 residents who died from coronavirus. the 174-page report released wednesday said the most substantial error was the decision to move all veterans, both covid-19 positive and those with no covid-19 symptoms into one unit. resulting in more than 40 veterans crowded into a space designed to hold 25. >> veterans that fought for our country just put together like cattle. >> reporter: workers described the move as total pandemonium saying the space resembled a war zone. one social worker said they felt they were moving these unknowing veterans off to die. the investigation was ordered by governor charlie baker. >> veterans who deserve the best from state government got exactly the opposite. and there's no excuse or plausible explanation for that. >> reporter: nursing homes around the country have been

jonathan vigliotti has been following this in paso robles, california. any word on a motive?> good morning. the sheriff says there is no doubt this was an ambush. but at this point, the exact motive is unclear. that manhunt came to an end in this vineyard. the suspect's father saying that he had schizophrenia and was living in a fantasy world. >> the suspect was shot. >> reporter: that announcement came after law enforcement swarmed the streets and the sky of paso robles, closing in on mason lira and killing him in a shootout thursday. >> unusual, frightening. it's unreal he's brought it to this town. >> reporter: the shooting spree began wednesday morning when he shut a sheriff's deputy in the head outside the police station and fled the scene. dreyfus is expected to recover. just blocks away, police found the body of a dead homeless man with a single gunshot to the head. they suspect lira was the killer. a manhunt ensued as officers scoured surrounding neighborhoods. and after lira was seen at a gas station early thursday. by around 2:00 p.m., police received another report
