jonathan vigliotti is there. >> reporter: tourism drive the economy here on maui, and the hope now is that tourist dollars will help with the recovery and rebuilding effort. ard cou according to officials, the area has lost $11 million a day. we were at the airport yesterday, and we did notice a slight uptick in traffic. the decision to reopen western maui has been a controversial one. most of the hotels up until now have been occupied by relief workers and the thousands of people who lost homes in the fire. we're talking more than 2,000 buildings were destroyed. many of them were homes. 98 people were killed, and at this hour, ten people are still officially unaccounted for. survivors will now have to be relocated to other housing to make room for visitors. meanwhile, 16,000 people signed a petition to pause today's plan, citing housing as a pprim. along with the impact traffic could have on removing all of the debris from lahaina. officials say that process alone could take more than a year. that's before rebuilding could even begin. and jericka, officials say it could take many mor
