back my law enforcement experts now and also add to the mix formerly of the u.s secret service, jonathan wackrow is with us and again, charles ramsey back with me as well as steve moore want to wonder jonathan, if i could go to you first and talk to me about, you the role of the secret service in this investigation. at the same time, continuing to offer protection to the former president fred. at this, i just want to expand a little bit about a little bit on what kristen holmes just reported about the enhanced secret service protection around the former president. i think that's really important here because what we've seen recently in the expansion of the protective agents that are around the former president is around really the outer perimeter that early warning in the secret service they refer to it as a counter surveillance and they work oftentimes with local police especially around golf courses. we've done this for years dating back to you the bush administration, where we've had golf course protocols that were put into place, thinking about the thinking about like the concentric rings of

jonathan wackrow, i want to ask you as former secret service kristen mentioned and we all remember the assassination attempt on former president trump's life, not, not too long ago, that security has been increased around him. what role would they have played today? how does that factor into? all of this well, listen, what we do know is that the secret service has said that they've put more protective assets towards the former president, and those protective assets most likely include more tactical agents, both from the counter assault team, sort of the tactical team that will be travelling at all all locations with the former president more counter sniper teams. >> so when we think about the open air space of a golf course, the long-range threat is feel critically important to cover. so you'd have more counter sniper teams, but beyond that, if you think about the protective model of concentric rings radiating out from the protectee the outer perimeter, more counter surveillance agents who are undercover agents that are working that outer perimeter. very specifically designed to identi

with us this morning, cnn, law enforcement analyst, former secret service agent jonathan wackrow. jonathan, this is the map of the golf course. let me push in a little bit on the area of interest here. you can see this is the location, the approximate location of where the suspect was with the gun in. then we learned yesterday that he was in this area broadly here and maybe just across the street here for found 12 full hours. what's the significance of that? and what's the significance of trying to figure out whether it was actually right here in the shrubs or in this it's broader area for that timeframe well, what we know john is that the suspect had ample time to find the right location to launch his attack you know, 12 hours is an astronomical amount of time for an assassin to really you conduct, you pre pre-attack surveillance since understand the movements of people in the vicinity understand where local law enforcement may be driving by. >> they can see where the secret service may be setting up in advance of donald trump's arrival to the golf course. so this would be assassi

we're joined now by cnn law enforcement analyst, and former secret service agent jonathan wackrow. jonathan, thank you so much for being with us. i first want to get your reaction to how all of this unfolded and how specifically law enforcement has an interview with this student and his father, a year before the shooting. and now that the father is being charged with these crimes, how significant is that interview do you think in the grand scheme of the case against him? >> but i think that that interview is absolutely significant, right. because when we think about acts of violence, right this concerning behavior that this child had runs along a continuum. right. and so what we do know is that early intervention into problematic behavior is critically important in this interview the actions around this interview are a seminal moment of that continuum where there was a chance for the father working with law enforcement and others to intervene with his child to prevent concerning behavior in potentially change the course here. so the statements that were made by the father then knowi

jim thanks so much, brianna, let's talk more about this with former secret service agent jonathan wackrow jonathan, i mean, what do you make of these glaring failures? i mean, it does not get as i mean, more glaring than this, i guess you could say think the only way to categorize this is reading this report was painful. even though a lot of the elements that are contained within the report, such as, you know the lack of clarity around roles and responsibility, the interaction with local police, the challenge just with communication, those are things that we highlighted very early on, almost immediately in the aftermath of the shooting. but reading the details and the lack of responsibility that people are taking in the lack of clarity of who was in charge on that day is really stunning. and as a former secret service agent, and as i said, it's painful to read because i know that is not what the secret service is about. it's not the mission model that i was part of. and this is the result of this report or really important for the acting director to take back to his leadership team and re

a reactive model and get to a readiness model i want to bring in cnn law enforcement analyst jonathan wackrow, who is also a former secret service agent, jonathan. so grateful to have you on the show. thank you so much for being here. can you explain a little bit more of what he means by that? how they are thinking about changing, how they do this well, listen to when he talks about the paradigm shift from reacted to this adl, i'm not really sure because they know that the women and men of the secret service, whether they're agents or officers, have always been ready with challenge in addressing a threat fire. >> but. i think that the acting director is trying to get to is that we are living in a very dynamic and almost unpredictable threat fireman that is changing very quickly for the secret service. just take a former president donald trump, for instance, you know, he does not fit the typical model of a former president's such as obama, clinton, or bush, where their threat proud profile, diminishes the further they get away from the office of the presidency former president trump, on the ot

jonathan wackrow, the fact that there was a gopro camera that was right near that fence near those backpacks that this suspect cat over there. what does that say to you? >> well, listen wolf, i think that a lot of these elements you speak to an elevated level of sophistication by this shooter, right? so the gopro camera was the intent here to live stream this attack by the fact that we saw those, we heard reporting that i believe we heard it during the press conference as well, that the backpacks contain ceramic plates again, this was really setting up a firing position the shooter probably intended to engage each directly with secret service agents at one point, i think the secret service structure, though the protective methodology by putting out agents in advance of the protectee during their golf operations to really flush out this type of threat along the edges of the fairways really proved successful. this is a model that the secret service has applied to these types of activities for a long time. i mean, dating back to i believe the bush and clinton administrations where the pudding a

jonathan wackrow, we also don't know exactly the distance, for example, right now between the secret service agent who spotted that beryl ak-47, the barrel sticking through that chain-link fence? scope the distance between the agent and between that gun, whether they sought with the naked eye or not, we know this all went down very quickly, that that gun law already through the chain link fence waiting jonathan what is your view from what we know right now? it's limited, but that's what we know about the actions of that secret service agent well, i think it's important to understand that the secret service has been dealing with protectees that play golf for a very long time. >> and they've they've curated over the years the protective model. and what i mean by that is if you think about a golf course, it's a very large area of real estate to secure. so what they've done is stay basically create a moving bubble around the protectee in this case, the former former president united states, in that bubble, you have what we've seen numerous times, which was the protective agents, the wome

brianna let's talk more about this now with former secret service agent jonathan wackrow jonathan how well i want to ask you first. >> we've just learned from the charging document this man this suspect may have been along the tree line for almost 12 hours preceding this incident, will kind of questions does that raise for you? >> well, you know what this points to is intent, right? you've looked at the pre-attack surveillance that he had conducted to find this very specific location. a location that not only gave him a level of cover and concealment, you to launch his attack? but also gave him a really good way to egress to get away you know, should he be discovered? again, you don't stumble upon that. that takes a little bit of thought and it shows a level of sophistication in his attack planning. but brianna, i think it's really important to understand if this person was here that long going in exhibiting this level of sophistication. this didn't all just materialize today. he's been thinking about this for a while. i think from a behavioral threat standpoint, this individual is re

earlier at cnn law enforcement analyst and former secret service agent jonathan wackrow. shed light on trump's security detail while golfing and what he says were clear vulnerabilities prior to this incident? >> there are specific protocols that have been in place for the former president when he is golfing and that structure has since been enhanced even more with additional agents. again, today, the model worked where those agents that were flanking in advance of the president, their role specifically is to identify this type of specific long-range threat. now, the question that follow up question is going to be in the secret service will need to address this is how was the outer perimeter? how is this shooter able to get to that outer perimeter? and area that should have been identified? but as a vulnerability previously, again, if you're able to get line of sight from the fence line into the golf course where the former president is. in this threat environment that needs to be addressed fully in as you may remember back in 2017, there was a cnn crew that was actually f
