jedediah: here to tell us what we can expect, judicial committee member senator joni ernst. senator, we have a big day tomorrow coming up and a big week for judge amy coney barrett. there's been a lot of talk about what issues will be focused on. many have focused on abortion. i actually think health care may take center stage this week. what do you think that people can expect to see? >> well, first, i want to congratulate judge amy coney barrett. she is a well known and well respected jurist, and so we thank her for stepping forward and being willing to serve as a justice should she be confirmed. but i do think you're right, i think a number of topics will be coming up. certainly, what we can also expect from the left is their continuous bigoted attacks on her religious faith. they know that they can't attack her on her job qualifications, so they absolutely are going after the fact that she is a mother of seven, she does believe, she is a catholic.

for months, joni ernst and teresa greenfield are locked in a dead heat. , the candidates have 47% apiece among registered voters for the second straight months. in models that assume high voter turnout, ernst gained a point putting her within the four-point margin of error. the top issues for hawkeye stay voters, the economy, law and order, the coronavirus and healthcare. which the candidates are spending a lot of time discussing. >> i wouldn't do what senator ernst did, which is to vote to end the affordable care act, gutting pre-existing conditionses, gutting prescriptions, mental healthcare, maternity coverage. >> when it comes to healthcare, we know we have to protect pre-existing conditions. i have never heard anybody argue that we shouldn't. so that is a bunch of false smears out there. >> only 2% of iowa voters have not made up their mind on who they'll vote for. in a race this tight, it's all about turning out the vote and convincing as many of those undecided voters as you can in the final days. >> bill: thanks, garrett. nice to see you in davenpo

so you've got your race, mcconnell's race, martha mcsally, joni ernst, thom tillis in north carolina,e in alabama, georgia whe purdue is, the senate is as important as the president winning because this would be the biggest power grab in the history of p the country, and if you add four democratic senators, if you pack the court, if amnesty is something of value to attract people to your party in perpetuity, seems to me, lindsey graham, i don't know if we'll see another republican president in our lifetime. >> well, they'll do away with the electoral college, which means new york and california will pick the president forever. they will go from 9 to 13 members of the supreme court to wash away our conservative majority, do away with the filibuster in the senate, meaning anything coming out of nancy pelosi's house will go to joe biden's desk. we've got to win for selection. we got to get president trump elected, got to keep the senate. they are going to spend $100 million to take me out and all of my colleagues. what can you do? if you can help me, i'm going to be up here all week, i w

a supreme court fight is the kind of thing that could potentially lift them up if you're joni ernst inat was the kind of thing that could help those candidates. but the president himself hasn't focused on this nomination, which will be a win for him come monday, barring something happening, and it's like formal those voters to take advantage of it. likewise, democrats in the last couple years have woken up to supreme court politics. democrats have not voted on the courts as an issue in nearly the same way with the same intensity the republican voters have, but the kavanaugh confirmation, the death of ruth bader ginsburg who was an icon on the left, i think, have got democratic voters who didn't used to pay attention to this issue now perhaps as equally as fired up as the republicans are about the prospect of filling this seat. i don't think it was the dramatic race-turning moment that republicans had hoped it would be. at least, that's not been the case where i am talking to voters. >> garrett haake, thank you for your perspective on all fronts. appreciate that. >>> let's go to iowa wh

you have joni ernst in iowa touting her record, martha mcsally. they all have to contend with how they reacted to the coronavirus legislatively. early on, months ago, they passed a large bill. mitch mcconnell passed a large bill with nancy pelosi to help inject money into the economy, trillions of dollars. we're 91 days into a negotiation that seems to never end between nancy pelosi and steven mnuchin. we don't know if there will be another infusion of coronavirus cash or if people are just going to be able to say democratic opponents are going to be able to say, republicans did nothing. they were unable to come together at the last minute to provide much needed aid to people across the country. we don't know how that's going to shake up. kind of going to what steve said, i'm not sure how important it is at this point, at least electorally. i'm not sure how many people have voted in advance of the election or end of the election, as we're calling it. i don't know what the political impact would be. i do know people need money. they need assistance

joni ernst is out campaigning before she goes back to d.c. for those judiciary hearings. confirmation hearings for the supreme court. while reporters were eager to ask her about the potential for roe v. wade being overturned or what that means if amy coney barrett is confirmed, she maintains she wants somebody who follows the constitution and she ma maintains she doesn't see roe vncht wade being overturned. it wasn't something that she spoke about on the stump, focusing on economic prosperity and what she called freedom. asking about their top issues, supreme court justice wasn't one that came up initially right away, but it is something that people have an opinion on the timeline. take a listen to what gary white told me. >> i don't believe that president trump or the republicans are doing anything wrong filling it. get it done. i say that because the democrats would do the same thing if they were sitting in that seat. this whole thing that the democrats have come up with about adding seats to -- >> packing the court. >> -- the court is absolutely ludicrous. i can't even

joni ernst is expected here in a matter of hours. you can see some of her supporters behind me.s is a change in what she normally does every year, her roast and ride. this appeals to making everything safer for the coronavirus. but it does kind of feel like the typical campaign events that we typically see. so it is interesting to be back out here. i talked to voters yesterday at her event over in des moines. and i was asking some of the republican supporters what exactly they are looking for when they are choosing between ernst or greenfield. listen to what mary beth told me. >> honesty. i just -- you know, if a person doesn't seem like they are real, why should you vote for them? if there is $100 million being used to put someone in the senate, find out why. >> yeah. >> if they are not a real person, why is all that money having to back them? >> so that $100 million you heard her reference, theresa greenfield has raised a ton of money, almost $100 million in support for her campaign. it is the second most expensive senate race in the state, in 2014 ernst led in her race by eig

les talked about election for senator joni ernst.cerned are republicans with the process of this confirmation battle so close to an election? >> a few things to mention. the amount of money democrats are raising right now -- you can't draw a straight line from the supreme court fight to donations. jamie harrison raising $57 million in one quarter against lindsey graham in a traditionally red state is stunning. many republicans and democrats say it has to do somewhat with the fervor around supreme court picks. tough to draw a line to that. the thing we have to keep in mind here which is so importantly politically is that republicans after many years of railing on the aca and suggesting they want to rid it from the law have not come up or passed any sort of replacement. donald trump talks about repealing the individual mandate. i know because i wrote a book on the tax law in part. he had nothing to do with that. that came out of the united states senate. it was one piece of the aca. it was not a significant part. the political question
