this week started with star witness jonnie williams on the stand. peggy fox has been covering the trial since day one. she joins us live outside the courthouse in richmond. hi, peggy. >> reporter: hey, andre ya. yes, star witness -- andrea. yes, star witness jonnie williams is still on the stand this morning under cross- examination by bob mcdonnell's attorney. they walked into court this morning. you see video of them going inside. every time we chat with the governor as he walked in and out of court, he commented on his capable attorney team, his legal defense and how he's looking forward to taking the witness stand. that will come up during the defense. but today under cross- examination, the defense attorney did poke some holes into jonnie williams' testimony. he testified he and the governor were trying to keep quiet and not disclose a plan to transfer stock. but in an e-mail from bob mcdonnell to williams, the governor asks about calling lawyers on this certificate. so it does seem to show that the governor was not trying to hide it. a few wee

how did jonnie williams come across today? >> reporter: his credibility was somewhat tarnished today let's say. he couldn't recall a lot. when maureen mcdonnell's attorney asked if he recalled what he said to investigators, over and over again at different meetings he could not recall. that was quite a contrast to yesterday when he was so precise recalling all kinds of conversations and details about his life. also we learned there were 1,200 texts and phone calls exchanged between him and maureen over an 11 month period. that's 110 texts and phone calls a month. so his assertion that the two only had a business relationship, that doesn't really make sense if you're texting and phone calling someone so much. >> of. >> it is -- >> it is easy to forget the mcdonnells have separate legal teams. >> reporter: maureen mcdonnell's attorney said in their opening statements that look, she was in this failing marriage. their marriage was on the rocks. she was vulnerable and this wealthy businessman, this salesman, comes along and totall

peggy fox reports the former governor talks about his situation with jonnie williams. >> reporter: on his final day of testimony former governor bob mcdonnell was surrounded by his children. >> my son just got back from duke last night. my other son is coming back from vanderbilt. >> reporter: mcdonnell said he accepted many of the gifts from jonnie williams such as government outings and vacations to spend more time with his family. he of ited he didn't know about other gift -- he testified he didn't know about other gifts to maureen and could not have conspired with her because the two were barely communicating. the final witness was fbi agent katherine web are and found in the 22 months covered -- weber and found in the 22 months covered in the charges mr. and mrs. mcdonnell spent 90% of their nights together, but the defense poked some holes in her testimony. >> that argument was somewhat diminished by the fact they didn't draw the chart to scale. >> reporter: political analysts say it will come down to who the jury believes, jonnie williams or bob mcdonnell. >> williams certainly

sutherland did admit jonnie bought her a dress but kept refusing it but jonnie williams kept insisting. finally she said she accepted the $1500 dress because it was easier than fighting about it. she said the dress is still in its packaging with tags on it and that she presented it to the prosecution yesterday. we still haven't seen that dress, how much. probably the most damaging testimony by mary-shea sutherland was maureen mcdonnell's demeanor. she said maureen yelled and screamed constantly, not just at her but other staff members. it got so bad one day that the protection detail or a couple days actually that the security detail came in and asked her if she was okay. and then another day whether bob mcdonnell brought her into his office. she said he was really kind and she said, try to understand -- he said try to understand my wife. she's trying to adjust to the first lady role and her father recently died. well, to that mary-shea sutherland said she pushed back and said look, both of my parents died and i never treated anyone the way she treats us. here's what bob mcdonnell said

be careful with guys like that, jonnie williams continued on the stand. huge part of today's testimony involved establishing that williams and the former governor and first lady were not close friends, as they had claimed. the reporting on this soap opera have become primarily a burst of tweets. the trial is not on television, and we're getting some of the best from the washington post reporters. they were not my personal friends, williams says of the mcdonnells. i thought it was good for our company. he said of all the gifts he gave to them. they were also shown videos of mcdonnell telling the convention that williams was an old friend of the governor. and he said, quote, i wasn't going to correct her, on mrs. mcdonnell's claim he was a close friend of the governor. finally, i knew it was wrong of the rolex watch he gave to the governor. i shouldn't have had to buy things to get the help i needed. inrolex watch he bought to the first lady so she could give it to her husband for christmas, was presented as evidence today and passed around by jurors. joini
