jon: i am jon erlichman with matt miller.e were just hearing from kathy jones, reacting to the july ppi report which came in stronger than x did. we are joined from washington with more. ask were story outlines, we had seen improvements for producers over the last year or a portion of the last year and now we are starting to talk about fresh headwind. reid: absolutely. that picture, you have seen producer prices move back toward the pre-pandemic trend. today's report shows decent prices moved more than x acted -- producer prices moved more than expected because of different flows. this went into the fed preferred inflation gauge which is the pce at the end of the month. 40% of the increase of services prices came from portfolio management fees, something that feeds both into the core pce at the end of the month and the super core measure folks looked at closely. compared to what we saw yesterday in terms of the sustained progress 22% goal, at the end of the month, we could get a jump scare as prices feed into these figures. m

jon: let's lean into that.rote in your story about some of the changes at dollar tree which includes the former dollar general management playing a key role at the company now. brendan: that's exactly right. kkr took the company public again in 2009. they brought in a ceo who, for many years at dollar general, presided over big-time store growth, large gains in sales, very successful story. he retired but came out of retirement recently to join a turnaround effort at dollar tree, which is backed by an activist. dollar tree has problems of their own. they cut their profit forecast earlier this month because of cost pressures, but they are really getting traction on the sales side. bringing people into the stores, which is a sharp contrast to dollar general, where customer traffic actually fell last quarter. vonnie: does dollar general need to reduce its footprint quickly, renegotiate leases? does it suddenly become a target? brendan: they are looking to continue growing. they have more than 19,000 stores in the

jon: let's get some reaction to that.is morning in reaction to the cpi data and it seemed like you are in the camp that would believe there's enough of an inflation trend that would justify at the very least being on hold in september. is that fair? guest: that is a fair assessment. i think the soft landing versus hard landing can't debate might be simplifying the variety of views. our view is that yes, we do expect a recession to unfold before the end of the year and that is precisely why we think that there is a strong disinflationary impulse in core inflation in the rest of the year. however, we see that there's a lot of potential at first -- adverse supply shocks coming in the fall. gasoline increase will cause the cpi headlined to be pretty ugly and also extreme weather in the fall could further worsen food prices. i think what we will see in the rest of the year is a diversions between headline cpi which may not continue the trend versus core cpi which will continue on at this -- disinflationary trend. i think they
