he is a senior at joplin high school. he is a science wiz and hopes to create new vaccines some day. graduation day this year will have a very, very special meaning for quinton as it will for so many in joplin. because the it was on graduation day last year, may 22nd at 5:41 p.m. that joplin was hit by the deadliest tornado in modern history. it went through the heart of the community. when i stood there surrounded by the smashed cars, and shattered homes, it was nothing but devastation as far as the eye could see. in just 19 minutes the twister left thousands of people homeless. more than a thousand people were injured, 161 lost their lives. the tornado leveled quinton's home. both his parents were killed. quinton was was thrown through the air and found blocks away. face down in a ditch with a fractured skull and his left leg torn to shreds, after leaving the hospital he had this to say. i used to just take each day like this was given to me. but it's not. it's a gift. you have to pray for the next one. don't give up ho

in joplin, so much of it able to bring together the faith-based community. the southern baptist cooking food for 50,000 people that was then delivered by the red cross to a salvation army shelter that was served by men nice and cleaned up by muslims. with no government involvement. that's whole community. that's what it's going to take to recover from these. a lot of times people start thinking about recovery. people start thinking about it as soon as the response starts happening. some start thinking about it as soon as the response is over. that's not the time to think about the recovery. the time to think about recovery is now. one of the things we have thought about is the national disaster's recovery frame work. we work ackry thems. ackry nelms. with the ndrf. it lays out forward how we need to recover from disasters. we are going to be going around the country. we went around initially. now we're going to go around again laying it out. still i want to get feedback from folks how to best do that. it's not going to take just government but the exact same

she's joining us right now by phone from joplin. shelly, first, eight months ago, but does it feel like it was yesterday? >> yes, and in some ways it does feel like it is yesterday. we have been through so much. it also seems like it has been a really long time ago. >> why did this hospital, like, i described it took a direct hit. why does it seem to symbolize a resilience of that community given that people died there and that building was severely damaged? >> i think there is several reasons. for one, it was the largest symbol of the disaster and had the hardest impact of the storm. we started rebuilding immediately, starting with the tent hospital and we're providing services in a minimal way in seven days. and i think that shows a resilience with all of the community support that we had. and all of the support we had from the sisters of mercy, our health system. >> so we're looking at images of that day, shortly after the tornado. and that's a pretty significant, sizable hospital. today they began the demolition. it is going to
