jorge rodriguez joins me live from los angeles. i want to talk about all of this. lovely to see you again. >> likewise. >> it's really quite surreal, listening to our report. because it seems like there's such a contrast. here in the u.s., vaccines are being distributed at record speeds. life looks like it's going to be going back to normal. some sort of normal, sooner rather than later. then we have europe. you heard jim bittermann talking about france. many people there facing this massive wave. why the discrepancy here? >> i think the discrepancy, yeah o "a," europe has not had the same velocity in distributing vaccines as europe or other countries has had. we need to wrap our head around the fact that this may never, or at least in the near future, not go to any degree of normalcy until the whole world is vaccinated. and the whole world needs to be doing that at the same time. so we're going to have what's been stated many times, sort of a whac-a-mole type of treating this. it's going to flare up in one place or another. even the united states. and i think ther

jorge rodriguez. dr. rodriguez, i just want to get what you think of what we just heard. >> well what i think of, this is a good first baby step. and whey heard also from the question that was being asked, everybody is so anxious to just completely go back to 100% normal. this does not say that. so we can't be that anxious and just rush out. what basically it is going to be very good for families and groups that are vaccinated and have been vaccinated. let me caution people as happened with the hiv world, people will say they are vaccinated just to try to get into groups so you have to vet the people that you're going to be with. i know that is a weird tlhing t say but it is also true. now these are small gatherings. again, it is what their saying, mostly for families and also if you're going to meet with groups, that are unvaccinated, you have to be sure that it is a small group and that is people that are not as risk for acquiring covid, because people that are vaccinated, even though they're going to be

jorge rodriguez, appreciate you joining me, good morning you to. >> good morning, amara. >> let's talk about this covid-19 test that looks to see if someone may have had covid-19 by looking for a longer lasting type of immunity that involves immune system cells. can you talk to us more about that and how that works? >> sure. it's a pretty complicated test, if you will. having been someone that has worked with hiv patients for the last 30 years, when your body meets a virus, it makes many, many different types of antibodies. and it also sparks up a different part of your immune system called the t-cells. and the t-cells are basically memory cells that are there to start producing antibodies and reactions. that's why it was also said that even though maybe some of these vaccines were not completely c curative against some of the variants, your t-cells are sparked up. i don't want anyone to get a false sense of security, but yet again, it is one more quiver that we have -- one more arrow in our quiver that we have in order to fight this virus. and it's a good thing. >> it sure is. i want

jorge rodriguez is with us. he's an internal medicine and viral specialist.k about this astrazeneca vaccine. first, we hear all the rave reviews yesterday about the vaccine, then today, there are concerns. bottom line, is this safe? or are there questions here about whether it's safe? >> well, brianna, there are definitely questions here about whether it is safe. it is probably a very good vaccine, but the data that was put out was put out by the company itself, by astrazeneca, and i think people should find some sort of comfort and solace in the fact that these studies are being monitored so closely there are data monitoring safety boards in every study that check even how the data is input and what they found is that there are some inconsistencies with the data, you know, that has been put out. what they're trying to make sure is that the data was not what we call in research mined, which means that they only presented the gold nuggets as opposed to all of the rocks. so, the data safety board and the nih said they will be prese presenting more information a

jorge rodriguez for more on this. because what they offered up, doctor, were two distinct and important parts, i think of an update. one, hope is on the horizon, but two, there is real trouble that they are seeing right now. let's start with the hope. which is j&j, the third vaccine, one shot being approved. they say it is going to go out to the country in the same way that the other two vaccines are out in the country. but the attributes of this vaccine is different and i'm wondering, because it is one shot, because it could be kept at regular temperatures, they kept talking about regular refrigerator temperatures and it offers up flexibility for providers. with the attributes of this vaccine, who and where do you think it could be most effectively sent? >> well first of all, i just think every time they give this update it is fantastic. the way they just address the issues. so kudos to them. this vaccine is available in the areas, most the most rural areas that don't have the large hospitals with sub zero refrigerat

jorge rodriguez. thanks for taking the time, doctor. so the big news today, as they noted in this briefing, is this data that dr. fauci is rolling through, coming from the astrazeneca trial. what do you think of it? >> well, i think it's very important to get that information out there. because this is going to be a very viable vaccine in, which you know, in other words, it can be kept at room temperature. it can be widely distributed. and manufacture the countries in europe and africa have already bought the vaccine. they have halted the distribution because there has been anecdotal information that it causes blood clots, especially around the sinuses and the brain. now you can have people say, yes, you know, i have blood clots. that has to be compared to the people that actually didn't get the vaccine. and this shows without a doubt that this vaccine does not cause blood clots more than the average population. it is very effective. it is effective against the elderly which is what the reason that some of the european countries have st
