joining us now, her defense attorney, jose baez.ing us, good morning. >> good morning, dan. >> what's your reaction, let me start by asking you, what is your reaction to this verdict? >> i wasn't surprised for a second. there was a reason law enforcement didn't arrest george zimmerman. and there was a reason the prosecutor in seminole county refused to file charges. and that's because they just simply didn't have the evidence. that doesn't mean that mr. zimmerman was innocent, but there was no eyewitnesses, and only one person's account. and no other forensic evidence to contradict it. i wasn't surprised for a second. >> so do you think there should be no legal ramifications for george zimmerman after having shot and killed an unarmed 17-year-old boy? >> i don't think that at all. but in order to convict somebody in this country, you have to have a little thing called evidence. and sometimes, that's very difficult to do. our law is set up in a certain way where it tells you we don't have the ability to go back and find out exactly w

. >>> let's bring in gloria allred, jose baez, who represented casey anthony, welcome to both of you. gloria, your reaction to what rob vereen was saying? >> most fascinating to me, he was only hired last week. i don't know how much time he spent with her. apparently he believes that really it is the job of the district attorney to coach or prepare the witness. i think that she would have benefited if he had been retained prior to her deposition. because once she gives her deposition under oath, then she's locked in to what she said, unless, of course, she corrects it afterwards, which she has an opportunity to do. she's going to be cross examined on that. also, he said he did not know what the defense theory of the case was. it would have been helpful to

back with me now, gloria allred and jose baez. you're involved a little bit with detective sorino. how did you think his testimony went down today? >> he's a straight shooter, he's going to tell it like it is, no matter who it helps. that's why a lot of people are saying, this is a good day for the defense. >> isn't he also going to confirm really why he and his colleagues took the actions they did on that night? in the sense that there was a lot of outrage there had been no charges against george zimmerman. they both come out today and give extensive testimony, saying, yes, we found him credible, consistent and so on, that lends to why they didn't do anything? >> i would disagree. if you look at the situation, they're not the ones that make the charging decision. that would be the state attorney's job. they had spoken with the state attorney previously who rejected to do a direct file. before they would make a decision on the case, the case was taken away and moved to jacksonville. if detective sorino had not done what he had done, we wouldn't have all these statements. the jury c

jury if that toxicology level made a difference. >> as several analysts have suggested, including jose baez, good news for the defense in showing that trayvon martin did in fact smoke marijuana earlier that day. jose, i want you to weigh in also, we were just talking about these five friends of george zimmerman who testified that they are 100% certain that the voice screaming out for help on that 911 tape was the voice of george zimmerman. now, that, as i said, that's a pretty powerful piece of evidence. >> yes, it is. not only are these five witnesses powerful for the defense, let's not forget about the testimony of john good, who testified that he actually believed the person on the bottom was the one screaming for help and that person was in fact george zimmerman. so you put that together with these ear witnesses and you've pretty much made it clear that the person screaming for help at this point is george zimmerman. i for the life of me can't understand why the prosecution has tried this case in that way. the key issue here is who was the initial aggressor and bringing the juror back t

jose baez will join us shortly.eresting to look back and see all these cases and kind of how people ended up. people do have to go into hiding. casey anthony for one, because people get very invested in these trials. >> right. and o.j. simpson is, i think, the classic -- is perhaps the most extreme example. look, i wrote a whole book saying i thought he killed his ex-wife and ron goldman. but then he gets prosecuted in nevada on what i thought was a very weak case, got an extremely excessive sentence, trying to take back his memorabilia where someone es had a gun. o.j. simpson, who didn't have the gun, gets this enormous sentence. it's karma, you know, caught up with him, but it was really, il thought, a very questionable case. >> mark, you initially represented michael jackson. when you're in the midst of such a high profile case like that, how do you counsel somebody after it's done about trying to resume a life? obviously not in the michael jackson case, but in other cases are you involved in sort of the after ca

also criminal defense attorneys jose baez and mark geragos.do you make of the forensic evidence you heard today? the firearm expert talked about the gun being pressed up against trayvon martin's chest, and yet that is different than what the autopsy report is. >> indeed. it's a contradiction as to the distance the muzzle was from the clothing and the body. but i think if you think about it carefully, the bullet has to penetrate two items of clothing before it hits the body. medical examiners looking at the body looking for stippling, which comes from the burning particles that are on the skin. because there were these two items of clothing in between, you could see differences. you wouldn't necessarily see that stippling. therefore the medical examiner concluded it was not a contact shot, whereas the ballistics expert concluded properly it was a contact shot. >> does it really matter, though, in terms of the end result? >> the bottom line is, it was a struggle. it wasn't a shot from a distance. it's consistent with a struggle. >> mark, the pro

. >> bergman: jose baez was casey anthony's defense attorney. he attacked the ability of dr. vass to scientifically identify the smell of death. >> his opinion was, "you just have to trust me." and i don't think that that's acceptable for a courtroom. but you're willing to come to this jury... unless you can clearly show that a prosecution is presenting evidence that is faulty, you're running into a danger zone. let's say, for example, the prosecution presents one witness that says something, and they're relying on an expert, and the defense puts their own expert to explain that it's junk science. who are you going to believe? >> i think it's a little bit naïve to think that the adversarial system will have smart lawyers on both sides, and they'll duke it out, and we'll figure out the right answer. we need the science first, and then let them fight about what the good science means, as opposed to struggling with disciplines that don't have good science undergirding them. >> lawyers are scientifically illiterate, judges are scientifically illiterate, and certainly juries are.

jose baez is joining us. also joining us is sunny hostin and our legal correspondent jean casarez.oks like that testimony was pretty strongly in favor of the defense, jose. how important was it? >> it's extremely important. for one thing, and that is that this trial has moved into a direction of who was on top, whose voice is that. wolf, i know vince di maio, i've worked with him. his book on gunshot wounds is the bible when it comes to gunshot wounds and is used by every forensic pathologist across the country. what this man says is extremely important. but the fact of what he says it's consistent with isn't necessarily definitive but the lack of prosecution on this issue gave it a lot more weight than it could have been. it still doesn't answer the question of who was the initial aggressor, who started this fight. the fact that at a certain point mr. zimmerman was on the bottom. i don't necessarily -- i wouldn't say it was a home run but it certainly is powerful testimony. >> did the prosecutors do a good job, sunny, in cross-examining this witness dr. di maio? >> i think so. a w

also joining us, jeffrey toobin and jose baez and mark geragos. jeff, let's start with you. juror b29 says that zimmerman was guilty but could not vote for guilt on either second degree murder or manslaughter because as the law was read to her, and i'm quoting now, you have no proof that he killed him intentionally. those were her words. does that make sense to you legally speaking? >> well, it certainly is a garbled reading of the law. the issue wasn't intention. the issue wasn't zimmerman's intention. it was whether he was legitimately exercising self-defense or not. but look, she's not a lawyer. that's not a big difference. what i think is important to say just at the outset is that second thoughts by jurors are fairly common, and they have no legal significance. you can't get a verdict set aside. you can't change -- you can't get a retrial. nothing can happen as a result of a juror saying i wish i had voted another way. >> benjamin crump, let me play another part of the interview with abc. listen to this. >> i know that you've heard some people have said point blank, the

let's talk about it with sunny hostin, jeffrey toobin, jose baez, robert horshorn, and mark geragos,d the trial was over in jury selection. sunny, i want to start with you. when this trial started, you said race had nothing to do with this. you did not see it through a prizm of race at all, yet after the verdict you changed your mind. >> i have changed my mind, and you're right, because i was seated in the courtroom and i listened to all the evidence come in as a former prosecutor, i didn't see this racial angle. because clearly the government was precluded from arguing race, and they claimed that it was a profiling case. but a criminal profiling case. but i think where i missed that piece was that i think that the jurors, especially when you listen to b37, sort of had these racial biases, these notions running in the backdrop of their mind. it was clear in that interview, it was an us and them reaction. she didn't find rachel relatable. she did relate to george zimmerman. so i think it was -- race was that elephant in the room that made its way into the jury room. >> mark, you said

. >>> jose baez is back with me now. jose, how do you think it is going so far?>> i think it is going as expected. i didn't expect the prosecution to be doing this well in terms of working with what they have. i think they've done an excellent job in that. but i still think there's a tremendous lack of evidence to be able to prove second degree murder here. >> do you think there's more and more speculation now that mark owe mara will not put george zimmerman on the stand? what do you think? >> i don't see why he should. you will have videotape statements from him where he is walking through the scene. he has already given -- you have seen audio. there is written statement. there's a plethora of evidence from george zimmerman himself that is not subject to cross-examination. so why put him to the test. whenever you put a defendant on, it is a one-witness trial at that point. if the jury doesn't like him or believe him, he is going down at that point. so i don't see the -- i don't see any reason to put him on. >> if the prosecution doesn't put any of those george z
