the corner of south first and oak streets in san jose, is a mural that honors the heritage of the guadalupe washington neighborhood. this is said chavezivists that was very important to the latino community. the neighborhood is primarily latino. it has been for the past 30 years. community members painted this mural five years ago to help deter gang graffiti. it highlights dia de les martos and violate folklore ago. i actually like two parts. i like the butterflies here, and i love the dancing here. one of the dancers community hero brenda lopez, who died of cancer in 1999, she noticed that there were a lot of children with elder with older siblings that were in gangs. and she felt like she could give back to the little ones give them something positive to focus on and she started the folklorico group. now this beloved community mural could be painted over, the new property owner has told the neighborhood association the mural did not jive with his plans. i asked them what his plans were for the building. and he said he wanted to fill it with high tech workers. he didn't want to have a mural that only was significant to one portion gr

jose. and this mural was painted 5 or 6 years ago for 2 reasons. number one, of course, it's a work of art and features a quotations the late activist cesar chavez. there are tributes here to a dia de los muertos to indigenous peoples and also san jose's renowned ballet folklorico in the late brenda lopez. but the mural also has a dual reason he was put here because this is one of san jose gang hot spots and there was a lot of graffiti in the area. and since this mural is going up here. graffiti has gone down here. so residents say this is a not a time to get rid of this mural for fear that the graffiti in the gang bang activity will come back. here's more on that now from the association's president. rosa linda aguilar. >> important for kim unity because it signifies them are like it. there's a big importance to our liking a culture big tied to that. there's a big tied to the actual event. when residents came out and we all put our part on this on this mural, this beautiful mural. and the reason why we did it was because we were having a lot of problems with that with gang activity and gang. you can tell what we call it. and we're trying to make
