nadine, before she became nadine menendez, befriended wael hanna. hanna, in turn introduced jose uribe to the couple. fred dab byes is a friend of the couple. prosecutors say the three men offered bribes in exchange for menendez's influence to enrich themselves and in ways that benefitted the government of egypt. the couple received gold, $500,000 in cash, and a $60,000 mercedes-benz convertible according to the indictment, which says on or about february 3, 2019, nadine menendez texted ha nah, all is great, i'm so excited to get a car next week. prosecutors say she was unemployed before she began dating menendez and received a low show or no show job from the men in exchange for allegedly arranging meetings with menendez and egyptian officials requesting military sales and financing. all five of them now codefendants, have entered not guilty pleas to the charges. nadine menendez's attorney says she will vigorously defend against these allegations. and if that 2020 interview is any indication, it would seem nadine menendez will stand by her husband. >> she's very, very caring, al

interfere with criminal investigations into two of the businessmen and one of them jose irve and they also said that menendezcommend someone to be the u.s. attorney to influence investigation into one of the new jersey businessmen fred davies, and he has plead guilty and his trial is for next month, and these are some of the details that we are learning that the prosecutor say that the menendezes did to influence policy including providing u.s. sensitive information to egypt. vi i have reached out to menendezes lawyers and have not heard anything, but there is a press conference at 11:00 a.m. we should learn more then. >> yes, and to learn more of the scope of this indictment, and kara, what is interesting is that the supreme court has made it harder to convict public officials on corruption charges. you have to prove really, it is hard to prove an official action was taken and part of the reason we know this is because senator bob menendez had charges brought against him, and there was a trial, a mistrial, and the charges were ultimately thrown out, and talk to us about that. >> right. so menendez was charg

conference there -- you see the podium set up -- what does this mean for menendez' role and position on capitol hill? >> reporter: no doubt, jose, this complicates the situation. he is one of the most powerful members of the united states senate. he sits as chair of the senate foreign relations committee. he's likely to step away while he deals with this indictment. he wields incredible influence on capitol hill and in the state of new jersey. as ken points out in the indictment, that's what prosecutors are alleging, he was using that political influence to help business partners who were providing him bribes in exchange for the help. this makes the situation complicated for democrats on capitol hill. there's a narrow margin between democrats and republicans in the united states senate. democrats enjoy that majority. we have not heard from chuck schumer as to how he intends to handle this situation with menendez. when menendez went through this in the past, as we pointed out back in 2018, he was under criminal indictment. underwent a trial. he stepped away from the foreign relations committee at that time. he was not acquitted

indictment senator menendez fell way, way below that standard. >> nbc's julie tsirkin joins us from capitol hill. great seeing you. this is bound to be a little awkward today. >> reporter: sure is, josetalked to senators, the number two senate democrat dick durbin who called on him to resign already and he told me there is so much that menendez could touch on in terms of these charges, in terms of this indictment and this would really be the first time that menendez is addressing his colleagues since the indictment came down. i did talk to a number of senators today, though, who told me they aren't sure there is anything that menendez could say that would sway them and change their mind on this. take a listen to that and we'll talk about it on the other side. >> what are you hoping from senator menendez today at lunch? >> senator menendez has asked to speak to a caucus and so he can say whatever it is he wants to say. >> reporter: is there anything that he could say that would change your mind? >> these are very serious charges and i believe that he should step away from the senate. >> these criminal charges are pending. i would be very interested in how he deals with that. i'm a law

prosecutors say menendez used his influence to enrich his codefendants and the egyptian government, interfered in an investigation against josebe, shared sensiti government information and with his wife, accepted a range of bribes, which investigators uncovered at the couples' property. >> some agents with the fbi executed search warrants on the residents and safety deposit box of senator menendez. when they got there, they discovered approximately $500,000 of cash stuffed into envelopes in closets. some was stuffed in the senator's jacket pockets. some of the envelopes of cash contained daibes finger prints and dna. agents also discovered a lot of gold, gold that was provided by daibes and hanna, and the fbi, of course, found the mercedes-benz that uribe had provided them. >> so senator menendez has responded to these charges saying in part, this, i ask that you recall the other times prosecutors got it wrong and that you reserve judgment. i am confident that this matter will be successfully resolved once all the facts are presented. a lawyer for nadine menendez says this, denies any wrong doing, and will defend vigorously a
