i had never met joseph allen, never seen joseph allen. i had no idea who he was.seen his picture in the newspaper. >> total stranger? >> total stranger. >> that evening when nancy saw police cars outside her parents' home, she knew they were coming for her. >> they knocked on the door, my parents let them in, arrested me, handcuffed me in front of my children, and took me to jail. >> it was a wrenching moment to be sure. but in lorain, there was little sympathy to be had for accused child molesters. >> cast rate them and shove it down his throat or i could take him to my house and torture him and her a little at a time like they did these kids. >> yeah, cut him up. >> for anyone watching all this play out in the media, this case seemed to be a continuation of a sickening nationwide trend involving child care workers and the child abuse of children. >> it seems as though every passing day brings more stories about child sexual abuse in this country. >> it was against this backdrop in the summer 1994 that nancy smith and joseph allen went on trial. everyone it seeme

politics on a small piece of land naming one of the three children from that second marriage joseph voltere allen. and he prospered as a farmer as much as he could. raising cattle, trading them to the british. ver hospitmont had free trade w rest of the country couldn't. vermont did not become a state until 1871 after ethan allen died. it came about after a drought in 1988 and '89, the exact same drought that was causing starvation in the streets of paris. i think i'll touch off the french refrigerator lugs. but on february 10th, 1789, oath than allen and one of his two hired men, a free black man named newport, crossed the ice to get a load of hay from a cousin on one of the islands in lake sham plain. that was the hardest thing for me to find out, the name of this man. he was invisibility to history. i started studying voluminous amounts of town newspaper records and actually found an article in 1943 that identified the farm hand of ethan allen, the name had been passed down among local people. the other farm hand he had had been partially call pd in the attack on montreal and was so poor that

produced a schism in new england and 300 new separatist churches which was too much for ethan allen's father joseph. he was born a proud pure tan. they called themselves saints, upper case "s" much as evangelicals still do today. rather than stay in litchfield and be part of the great awak awakeni awakening, he led 19 families into the wilderness of northwestern connecticut, which seems like a funny thing to say, the wilderness, but in a valley he started the new town called corn wall. he was everything the town moderator, the selectman, the tax assessor, the tax collector, the grieve all of those jobs until enough people came along. the problem for ethan allen was you didn't build a school in a new community until there were 50 families. why that number? we have this old saying at least when i was growing up, we were told an idle mind is the devil's work shop. in fact, massachusetts had passed a law in 1648 called the old sanctum law, so whenever the community reached a population of 50 families they had to build a school house. ethan allen was born too soon. his younger brother ira and his younge
