his family says the pilot, joseph milo was a well known restaurant owner the west hampton beach. tonight there are questions about what air traffic controllers told him when he was desperately trying to make an emergency landing. long island reporter kristin thorne is in west hampton beach tonight with the latest. kristin. >> reporter: liz, i spoke with joseph milo's wife and she says the last thing she wants to think about are the last few seconds of her husband's life but she says she knows in her heart that he did everything he could to spare the lives of people on the ground. joseph milo was the type of person that everyone loved because he cared about everyone he came across. >> he was a great community person and the whole family was that way, so it's a real loss to the community. >> reporter: the 59-year-old was flying his plane from west hampton beach to new jersey sunday morning when around bethpage he reported to air traffic control that he was experiencing difficulty maintaining altitude. the controller at laguardia airport responded. >> there's a strip right about you

, he was misguided, it was tragic for all of us because he just was so loved here. >> reporter: joseph milo owned a popular montauk highway restaurant joe's american cafe. following milo's funeral, a family reception was held here. >> i went to the funeral and there was over 3,000 people there. >> reporter: milo, an experienced pilot, was heard telling air traffic control he needed to put down, could not restart the engine, was unable to see the bethpage strip. grumman closed the airfield in 1990. now a mix of light industry and residential homes. >> the pilot should have up to date maps and should know where he is but the controller can help and just advising him of his exact position wind direction, things like that. >> reporter: it's up to the pilot to safely land the plane? >> 100%. >> reporter: milo departed here to an airport to fly a friend to new jersey. that sole passenger survived. he and the air traffic controllers are being interviewed by the national transportation safety board. from westhampton, jennifer mclogan, cbs 2 news. >> now, this preliminary ntsb report does indicate t
