so joseph smith decided to incorporate polygamy into his religion, which he called plural marriage. and this is now getting into the victorian era. and some of his -- he said to his male followers, not only can you but you must take additional wives. and many of these straightlaced, family man who had joined the mormon church were appalled. a they formed, in nauvoo, dissident group. they were still mormons, but they had really thought joseph smith had gone over the top. smith was at his peak in those days. he was running for president of the united states. he had the second-largest army on the north american continent. and he decided to send a group of followers down to smash the press of this dissident group before they could put out their newspaper. which he did. but he forgot he was still subject to civil law. they pressed charges against him. he was arrested and put in jail with his brother. and while he was awaiting trial, a group of non-mormons broke into the jail and killed him, essentially lynched him. he was only 39-years-old when he was killed in 1844. and it had only been 14 years since he had found and translated the book ofmormon. mormon. in t
