i want to welcome joseph stiglitz, economics professor at columbia university.so the author of the new book, how a common currency threatens the future of europe. that creating a single monetary union before having the political institutions to support a union like that or even the solidarity in a country bloc is a dangerous experiment, it looks like it might have hailed or -- failed or slowed. is sovereignty the answer? how much sovereignty is the correct amount? really cooperation as much as sovereignty. when you have a single currency, you have to have institutions like, and insurance, which the united states has, carmen resolution so if a bank in the state of washington has a problem, the nation fails it out. unemployment, when california employment goes very high in a recession, the whole nation helps pay so that california doesn't get bogged down into a fiscal crisis. the united states has that, europe doesn't. there are a set of institutions that the united states created to make a single currency work and the 21st century. europe doesn't have those. --th

[applause] >> it is a pleasure to be here. i should begin with a question, why should an american like me be writing about europe, doesn't america have enough problems of its own that should get our attention? actually think there are number of reasons of why it is important for the united states. as an economist the point is that the euro is a really interesting experiment. we like it interesting experiments even when they are not really great ideas. thank you. what i said is one of the reasons why economists like me are interested in the euro is that it was a really interesting experiment and even if it was a foolish experiment we don't have that many experience in economics and this is one on a grand scale. unfortunately even though it was founded, as i will explain explain with the best of intentions, one cannot base a grand experiment of having as much implications for so many people just on a visionary idea. one has has to pay attention to the laws of economics. you can't just r
