tom fuentes, josh campbell, they're back with me. we're learning here and there from some of the students, what they heard and what they saw. 6 one witness, tom, told cnn affiliate ktrk that a gunman walked into an art class and began firing. what looked like a shotgun. the difference what do you think when you hear shotgun, shotgun is a whole lot different than an ar-15. >> it is very different. mainly in the amount of firepower. you have a shotgun that most of them, after five or six shots, you would have to reload it and it would take some time, where as an ar-15, you have generally a 30 round magazine, very quick to load another 30 rounds in it. if you are inflicting all of these shots, it would be much easier to do that with an assault rifle. we just don't know from the eyewitness account how familiar she is with weapons. many kids, you know, hunt in texas, they go out with their father, mother, and, you know, have a pretty good knowledge of weaponry. so we don't know if she just thought it was a long barreled gun, and called it

josh campbell, let me start with you, dimitri. we know he posted this image, a t-shirt that red born to kill and he also nazi images, a pin and a hammer and sickle and others. would those in and of themselves raise red flags for law enforcement officer. >> absolutely. and they should for anybody. and i think part of the issue here is that we're kind of taking a passive approach to looking at red flags and only looking at social media and saying what he posted, but he had a network. he a community that assisted him in carrying out this act. we already know that there is another potential suspect. so that means that there -- at least one other person and potentially others that were -- knew about or was involved in what he was planning. so i think we should start to focus more so on the human factor and start to look closer at these rare flags and not take such a passive approach as we have. >> art roderick, the governor said that the shooter -- his weapons were a shotgun, and a .38 revolver, which he took from his father. it is unc

i want to bring in my colleague crime and justice report shimon prokupecz and josh campbell as well. shimon, starting with you, the president has said repeatedly to many of his aides skpal liand a collusion is dead, it's a dead issue. there you have a trump campaign aide saying they seem to have something on it, at least they're intent on going down that path. >> the focus, according to michael caputo, was on russian collusion, and he commented on just how well prepared the fbi agents were and the u.s. attorney and just a mound of information they had. and here's what he said about that to anderson cooper last night. >> i think they're very focused on russian collusion. i think they believe that they'll get to something. they didn't tell me not to talk about this, they asked me not to interfere in the investigation as i exited the room, and i really don't want to give too much details because i feel that interferes with the investigation. however, they're talking about wikileaks, they're talking about d. d.c., all the stuff you would suspect they're looking into, and i'm concerned fo

the former special agent josh campbell was with comey on that day and he's joining us along with our over at the white house when the story broke. josh, walk us through first of all how that day unfolded. >> hi, wolf, the day started just like any other. comey was someone who would get out and see the work force. the fbi is a deployed organization and communities across the country so he wouldn't sit inside of the beltway and he would get out and visit the troops and so we started in washington and dropped to florida for a speech with law enforcement officials and continued on to los angeles and at los angeles field office he went as he did around visiting employees at their desks and then met with a group of them in the command center and at that point when he is sitting there addressing employees that he noticed looking over their heads two television screens in the back of the room. one of them had fox news and the other one had cnn and on fox it comes on and indicates that comey has resigned and he doesn't know what to make because he would know if he resigned. we later learned th

let's go to josh campbell who left the fbi in protest earlier this year so he could speak out against political attacks on the bureau. josh, i want you to fact check the president for me. just lay out everything that he has gotten wrong. >> well, so, brooke, the president is certainly an aficionado when it comes to branding. you think of the trump hotel, "the apprentice", these are things that are catchy and they catch on and become part of our vernacular. the problem here is that spygate probably isn't going to fall into that category. in order to have a spygate, you have to have a spy. in this situation we're dealing with a confidential human informant within the fbi. there is a major difference. when you think about a spy, you think about someone skulking in the shadows, whose motives may be questionable. we're talking about an individual assisting law enforcement with working and investigating a lawfully predicated case looking into counterintelligence threats. there's a big difference. i think when the president talks about a spy versus an inform waninformant it comes back to bra

with us as well, former fbi supervisory special agent, josh campbell. carl, you heard director clapper saying the ap now reporting that the president is intentionally using the term "spy" to kind of create this nefarious narrative of what he claims is going on. it sounds basically just like a classic misinformation campaign. do you think the president is -- i mean, is this just par for the course? is this just the normal stuff? or is this an escalation? >> oh, it's a continuation that the president has used the term spygate, to obviously invoke the ghosts of watergate here. and what he is doing is creating a fictional narrative to escape the rule of law and legitimate investigation himself, a legitimate investigation that has been authorized by his own justice department, that his former campaign associate, christie, yesterday, praised mueller, the director of that investigation, special counsel, and he's using this as a means of covering up whatever is at the bottom of this investigation and what the special counsel is trying to get at. >> point-blank,

josh campbell is joining us. he's our cnn law enforcement analyst, fbi supervisory agent. when you hear that kind of audio, the scanning audio from local police, as they go into the school, they hear shots fired. josh, what goes through your mind? >> obviously the adrenaline is pumping, the stress hormones are pumping through veins as they make entry. their main goal is protection of life. as we talk about way too often, unfortunately, this notion that the law enforcement's standard procedures have shifted away from holding a scene and preparing to make entry once you have all assets in place to go into some of that gunfire. we heard that dramatic audio where officers are going into a chaotic situation, and oftentimes, as we've seen here, when they hear gunfire, they're going to report that back. for all the officers that hear that, it raises the anxiety, the stress, and it's an all hands on deck situation when you know you have live fire and people's lives are in danger. >> you heard him say the shooter is in the art room, so obviously the shooter got into that room and h

josh campbell is still with us. you heard lowell's explanation for why the security clearance was restored and why it took so long to get the security clearance. does that all make sense to snu. >> well i'm with jobe on not drawing the distinction. in one end we have the special counsel investigation looking into what jared may or -- may not know and then we have the white house security office trying to determine suitability for classified information and i don't know if though two sides will talk with each other. one thing that stood out with respect to the interview, we get paid in the business to pars the word of lawyers an one thing that was interesting and appears mr. kushner was cooperative, he and he answered every question. when i was an fbi agent, i sat across from people that answered every one of my questions and that doesn't mean they answered them accurately or fully. i'm not suggesting that is the case. we have to pars this lawyer speak. and the second thing being this should give some sense of comfor

happening, both on the ground there, how the investigation is unrolling, including former fbi agent josh campbell. josh, bringing you back in here, as we look at what we're learning, the fact is we're just learning the second person in custody, 18 years old, believed to be a possible accomplice to the suspect but not the shooter. what will provide a lot of information obviously are these two people who are in custody. >> that's right. and if you back up about an hour ago when we were hearing from the sheriff's department that there was one person in custody and another person who they described was detained, there were questions of what was the association. now it appears as though they have taken this person into custody so there will be a lot of questions that investigators will have for this person as far as what knowledge he had of the events of today, you know, any of the prior planning. again, just so many questions there. this is also somewhat unusual in that we now have two people who are alive who can presumably tell investigators exactly what happened, what was going through their mind.

i have with me cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell, a former fbi supervisory special agent and former federal prosecutor general rodgers have with us, she's now a lecturer at colombia law scho -- columbia law school. emmitt flood surprise shows up at this briefing. why? >> well, this to me really shows, you know, what is going on with the president's interference with this in the first place, right. the president is under criminal investigation. he's been told he's a subject. so under no circumstances should he be a part or anyone representing him be part of a meeting where that investigation is discussed. that is entirely inappropriate. the president technically may have a role in trying to broker congressional oversight over the department of justice, which is why originally them getting involved maybe wasn't so terrible if you consider it from that angle. but the president's personal lawyer on the russia investigation being there shows me that is not what this is about, it was about getting information about the investigation, which should not happen. >> you want to jump in?

james gagliano and josh campbell, thank you for joining us. h, one of the reasons you left the fbi was because of attacks like this by the president. when you see something like this happening where he's accusing your former colleagues of spying on his campaign, how do you respond to that? >> well, it's interesting. let me say at the outset i didn't retire. jimmy retired. i'm a former fbi agent. what we see in front of us is a sideshow that has been moved into the center ring. the problem is they're trying to distract attention from the underlying investigation that's going on. the you think about what should be important here, it is the fact that a foreign hostile intelligence service attempted to interfere in the united states election. we should all be focusing on that. but instead what we've seen, we've seen this pattern where you're trying to discredit and distract by focusing on other things. if we look at this quote/unquote spygate, which many of us are not using that term other than to quote him, there are two issues here the first bein

i want to bring in josh campbell, one of our national security analysts who is joining us now, formerl, fbi. josh, very little information is known right now. as jim pointed out. it's unclear exactly how this unfolded, but we do know five people were attacked. at least one person is dead. two more are gravely injured, according to the french police. what's your assessment, just with the little information we have currently? >> it looks like fast action by law enforcement there. within minutes, it appears the subject was neutralized and taken down. if you look at these types of situations where you have highly populated areas, those are obviously prime targets for someone looking to inflict damage and cause a large loss of life. but police also have learned around the world that you need to beef up security at these locations. so what it tells me is seeing that this person was taken down so quickly, he was probably in a location where you had officers there readily available, and the type of weapon he used, and let's talk about knives. when compared to firearms, you have less likelihoo

joining us now is josh campbell, former fbi supervisor, special agent and juliet, former assistant secretary within the department of homeland security. josh, isis coming out claiming responsibility for the attack. how does that impact or shape the investigation on the ground in these early hours. >> there are a lot of data points. in the wake of an i tack like this, there's a lot you don't know, but as information comes in, they're going to gather witness testimony. they're going to gather information they may get through their own holdings and as they dig into this person's life, they're going to be gathering information and really build up the full picture of wh this person is. as we listen to these claims of responsibility, i'm of the mind set of someone who kind of breaks a little bit because isis and a lot of these troops will come out and claim responsibility without knowing who these people are are. as i listen to the details we've seen come in and we're in a time an place and juliet knows this, working home land skert, we have to talk about things in comparison to how deadly they co

jeffly toobin and josh campbell. jeff, does it make sense to you, rudy giuliani, i mean does he have the leverage to demand this information about a confidential source as a condition of an interview? >> well, he can decline to give an interview for any reason or no reason at all, and then they'll just fight it out in court over a subpoena. what looks to be going on here is that giuliani is looking to create some sort of impasse so that he can decline an interview. and he seems to be erecting obstacles just for the purpose of avoiding the interview -- >> he's latching onto this so-called spy issue. >> right, and this so-called spy issue, first of all there's absolutely no evidence there was a spy. second of all, even if they learn the identity of this person, that has very little to do with what the president's going to be asked about. so it's really a fake issue. >> and what do you make of flood showing up at both meetings? >> again, what the president has been trying to do is discredit the investigation, discredit

josh campbell, walk us through.ed to work at the fbi -- where this investigation stands right now and where it's heading? . >> so two aspects here. there's what law enforcement officers are doing right now. interviewing witnesses and associates trying to determine did this person act alone, the motive. there's the physical aspect where they go through the locations, the trailer that we've been seeing, where there may be evidence of criminal activity. also the social media that digital space where this person may have resided and evidence may have been. that's the investigative side going on. the second part is coming shortly. that is the initial appearance. this is the first opportunity for the subject to be brought before the court. i suspect this will be a very short hearing where the defendant will be presented formally with the charges against him as we've heard reported there are likely to be capital offenses in texas with murder -- murder. >> he'll enter a plea. it may tell us the following. obviously in this
