. >> stay with me, i have anthony may, a retired explosives investigator and josh campbell, former fbi, has been all over this as well. josh campbell, these packages got to these different places some by courier, some ended up in mail facilities through the u.s. postal services. what do you make of that? >> we are learning the different methods and mediums of delivery of these packages. we talked about how broad this investigation is, essentially coast to coast now, new york to los angeles to florida. each one will be looked at differently. the united states postal service, if you think about commercial shipping companies such as federal express and ups, they all have highly sophisticated ways of track being packages that transit their system. if you look at the unabomber and the anthrax attacks of 9/11, the postal inspector came to local authorities and said we need to beef up ways to track packages and you see a more sophisticated level. when it comes to delivery, the couriers -- >> but what's your read on that, that this was even sent via courier? >> in any investigation, you want t

let me turn first to you, josh campbell.he pictures of the van, as we mentioned, highly political, how does it help law enforcement understanding? >> so from the moment we first saw these pictures and shimon and i were watching in realtime as the officers approached and then they placed a tarp over this van, the question is why is the fbi doing this? >> why? >> there are instances whenever you're moving evidence or moving a vehicle, you might want to package it up so evidence doesn't want to come out. i don't think that's the case here. we've seen cases where they've put it on a tow truck to take it to the office to process it. this is obviously politically charged now and people will be seizing on these and try to leap to motive and they could realize people will be following. now this is moving over the purview of prosecutors. this van is evidence and avoiding missed opportunities. you don't want to prejudice a jury, for example, that might be watching these broadcast images over national television. there are a number of

. >> we begin with law enforcement analyst josh campbell. he is in istanbul. josh, what are turkish officials saying about that late, really late admission from the saudis? >> reporter: they issued a statement, according to media, saying that the turks continue their investigation, that evidence will be shared with the world whenever it's finished, whenever they're certain of what they have. we're still waiting to hear that. obviously the ball is in their court to respond, to provide additional information. what is interesting here is that up to this point, we've been covering the story for two weeks and been referring to the journalist as missing or the disappeared journalist. according to the people who run the facility behind me, we're at the saudi consulate here, the alleged scene of the crime, he's not missing. he's not disappeared. they are referring to him as deceased. obviously that's sad news for khashoggi's family, his colleagues. this brings it to a new step in the investigation where there appears to be -- according to the people who saw him last --

the special agent josh campbell is joining us live. a senior law enforcement anal t analyst. josh, great to have you. josh, talk about the growing mountain of evidence if this were an fbi investigation, would it be over? >> it's a good question. a lot of information collected thus far. there is a way to go. we had reporting in turkish media. the report is close to being wrapped up. they mentioned saudi officials are asked for an arrest warrant and if they can't find them to go through interpol channels. there is evidence collected here, but subjects at large that were responsible. we talk about the mounting evidence. let's talk about what we have seen. the facility behind me, the a a alleged scene of the crime. cnn learned it was allegedly audio and video recording in the consulate where the journalist met his demise. that is not something that has been made public. obviously that is an interesting piece of information. we learned that cnn has several passport photos of the alleged hit team which came from saudi arabia to conduct the operation here behind us. one of the indivi

i want to bring in cnn law enforcement analyst and former supervisory agent, josh campbell. josh, what will help investigators determine a clear motive right now? >> so there are a lot of clues here, mike. my dear friend lisa monaco talked about the commonalities. there is another set of commonalities investigators will look at in order to dig into the mind set of the person who did this. and that is the target set. the people that were targeted, where devices were actually sent. i know some people will look at this through a political lens. law enforcement officers won't care about the politics of it. but we can't lose sight of the fact that all of the targets here have these commonalities. they're all democrats or in progressive circles or have been the subject of wrath from the president, from his allies and such. so that's going to be key, because, again, investigators are trying to determine who is responsible. so the motivation will all go back to why was the person actually targeting these people, and in order to do that, you have to develop that target set. i will tel

josh campbell is back here with me. josh, where does this van go immediately from the scene? >> it's going to go likely to the fbi office, if there's a satellite office nearby, or local police station. some type of law enforcement facility over which they have control. again, this is now part of the chain of custody in the case against this person. so obviously, every movement, every step of this vehicle will be tracked and documented. >> there's going to be evidence all over this thing. >> look at the writings. >> full of evidence with regard to his dna, with regard to possibly maybe indicia of some of these explosive devices. >> also, this van, they likely may have this van on surveillance video somewhere when he was going maybe to ship some of this stuff or to buy some of this stuff. >> you think about the packages, all the material. all of that, there may be remnants of that. we have to remember, this is just one piece of evidence here. there's also likely going to be a residence or perhaps an office. it will be a major investigation. >> one of the reasons also they need

>>> joining me now to break down the latest in the investigation, cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbellgent. josh, the authorities have the suspected shooter. they have his weapons. you and i were remarking a short time ago at how quickly the authorities were able to gather evidence and learn a lot about the suspect. so what more are they trying to learn? >> they're really looking at three key areas. they have him, they want to do that interview. but setting that aside, the first thing they're going to look at are his associates, the people in his orbit, his family and friends, trying to paint a picture of who this person was. secondly they're looking at his physical presence. we know they're looking at residences, addresses that are associated with him, perhaps a place of employment. lastly, this has been the most troubling, his digital presence, disgusting anti-semitic comments he made to help prove their case. it also helps to figure out if they see this activity again could that help them prevent this in the future. >> we know there were three pistols that he had on him that were le

bring in cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell in istanbul. josh, what are turkish officials saying about this weeks on late admission from the saudis? >> reporter: victor, so far the silence is tadaec deafening. a lot of movement within government, providing information about their version of the investigation. president errdogan had a nationl address, not a word of khashoggi or the investigation. fwen, l -- again, a lot of thinking, they expect results will be issued in short order, but so far no official word from them. it appears as though the ball is in their court when it comes to providing information and evidence. as you mention and we all recall, there are reports of audio recordings from inside the facility, at the alleged scene of the crime, the consulate. heard reporting that the turkish authorities had it wired and bugged and heard moments that the missing journalist, now deceased journalist, met his demise. the onus is on them to produce the tapes and provide that evidence. so far a lot of questions, we have seen strategic leaks t

back with me now is cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell, also a former fbi supervisory special ee you, josh. the suspect is in custody. what are investigators now looking for in terms of evidence at his apartment, they have exhausted looking at his car. how will this help substantiates the case? >> there are several teams working here simultaneously. we have a team that will be inthrusted in him, perhaps conducting an interview. we know he was hospitalized and received what was described as multiple gunshot wounds. that's focused on him. at the same time, law enforcement officers are fanning out to cover three other areas. possible residences, places of employment and the like, trying to gather possible additional evidence that may help with that motive as far as trying to determine what he was thinking and what kind of went into that planning. also, there is his associates. they want to talk to friends, family members, colleagues. again, trying to get a mindset, build a picture of who this person is. lastly, we have been talking a lot about these very troubling social media pos

joining us now, assistant director and cnn senior law enforcement analyst tom fuentes and josh campbellal agent and cnn law enforcement analyst. great to have both of you and all your vast experience here with us. tom, let me start with you. do you want to interview, if you were still an fbi agent, brett kavanaugh and christine blasey-ford? >> we can't go by the reports of who they're going to talk to or not talk to and the scope. we heard the reporting from the white house, from senate officials and others of what that scope is going to be, but that changes all the time and it may not be caccurate. i would not rule out that those interviews would not take place. normally those are the last interviews you would do. you want to interview other witnesses first if you have a list of witnesses to go after. i don't put a lot of credence in what we're hearing in the reporting of how big the scope. we heard right away friday the scope is going to be extremely limited and only concern the allegations made by ford and last night we hear that the fbi talked to ramirez. we don't know exactly what

joining us now, legal analyst paul callan, cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell. a former fbi supervisory special agent. josh, i want to ask you this question. these are cases of domestic terrorism. they're designed to kill and strike fear. and there's often been this question as to whether enough resources are being focused on this kind of terrorism, as opposed to the one we tend to talk about when we talk about terrorism, which is islamist inspired great threat. does domestic terrorism in your experience get the resources it needs from law enforcement to prevent these kinds of attacks? >> it has resources, but it doesn't have the same legal underpinning as international terrorism. when you think about islamic extremi extremism, isis, al qaeda, and the like, there are severe penalties for those who operate in violation of those laws. not the same with domestic terrorism. federal law defines domestic terrorism, but it doesn't make it a criminal act per se. what law enforcement officers have to deis find some other violation, whether it's use of weapons or some char

. >>> joining us a former fbi agent josh campbell. anthony perante is with us a former bomb technician. pamela brown is our senior white house correspondent. josh, you are getting new information on the manhunt, the nationwide manhunt for the person or persons who may have been responsible for sending these devices. what are you learning in. >> that's right. we look at this as an international nrnd. it -- incident. it's spanning from california to florida. and a mail facility some devices were believe to have processed through. this is a clue, trying to track it back to the location that may have processed some of these devices. it's a potential treasure trove of intelligence. since the unabomber case and anthrax after 9-11, they have improved their ability to track maim through the u.s. postal service system. so again, once law enforcement officers can track it back. they can determine is there evidence who may dropped off a maim package at this location? we're talking to some of our law enforcement sources who indicated it could be a

. >>> joining us now, former new york city police commissioner, howard schaefer, and josh campbell, and retired atf special agent david chipman. commissioner safer, if i could start with you first. you used to run the police department here, in the city of new york. also in difficult times. when you look at this threat so far, both the bombs we have seen so far, the fact that they were functional explosive devices, the reaction of the new york police department, what do you say to folks who have been saying, oh, this is being made into a bigger deal than it is? doesn't seem like the nypd is treating it that way. >> we are not. and they are not. and they should not. the fact is, live explosive devices, whether or not they were competently made or intentionally made, not to explode doesn't matter. they have all the elements of a bomb. they have power, they have a timer, they have an explosive material. so you have to take this very seriously. this may be the beginning or the prelude to somebody sending really functional bombs or it could be that the individual who put it together is so in

josh campbell and art roderick. josh, first to you. among the wounded, so the seventh wounded, is the shooter. >> that's right. what we've been asking ourselves up to this point is what happened the moment the person was taken into custody? was there an exchange of gunfire? how did the wounded, the injuries actually take place, and we're learning there from officials that they're saying that the officers were wounded. there were four officers injured in this incident, and interestingly enough, the subject himself suffered what the official was calling multiple gunshot wounds. the subject was in the hospital now and described as in fair condition, but that describes that there was at least some exchange of gunfire. both sides injured here. one thing that's interesting, i can only imagine what that crime scene looks like right now. you mentioned the special agent in charge. i know bob jones, he is one of the most buttoned down, emotionless by the books, just the facts person and say this is the most horrific thing i've seen in my career.

i want to bring in josh campbell, who has experience with these investigations. fbi did not interview judge kavanaugh or christine blasey-ford. the white house says there was no need for it, since they both testified for hours. do you agree? >> that comes down to the fbi's view. it's one of two things. either they determined there was enough in the public record, that both individuals had testified at length in front of the senate. obviously a lot there that they could then use to corroborate or ask other witnesses about. or it's about -- and this is more troubling. we've been talking to sources more familiar with the investigation. they made clear to us that just because the fbi hadn't interviewed dr. ford, for example, as of today, as of yesterday, doesn't mean that they wouldn't want to interview her at some time in the future. in these investigations it's not unusual to wait until the end of an investigation, after you gathered a lot of information, to sit down with the high-profile witness. there's been this one-week arbitrary deadline that's been imposed on

with us now, cnn law enforcement analyst, josh campbell, and cnn legal analyst, shan wood. josh, i would like to begin with you due to your long experience at the fbi. there's been a lot of talk about how important, weighty, or useful this fbi investigation will be. you've heard republicans say that, listen, all they're going to do is submit what's called a 302, basically witness statements, and not make any judgment, et cetera, how valuable can that be? and you have democrats saying, listen, a week? you're not going to learn much. there should be a longer time frame here. but in a week -- because even james comey has said, the fbi can accomplish a lot. based on your experience, how valuable is this time they've been given and the leeway, at least, as far as we know that they've been given to do this? >> so there are a lot of questions surrounding this investigation. i'll tell you, you know, i once had a drill instructor tell me that ability is what you do, character is what you are. in this situation, no one is questioning the judge's qualifications. there's no criminal inv

our chief national security correspondent, jim sciutto, and josh campbell is joining us. former fbi supervisory special agent. used to work international murder investigations with the bureau. josh, you're there, you're in turkey for us. what's the latest, first of all, on the investigation? >> reporter: hi, wolf. it's just past midnight here in istanbul, here in front of the saudi consulate. the scene of the alleged crime. and the investigation here very much continues. we are getting that new reporting you mentioned earlier, very gruesome reporting indicating that journalist jamal khashoggi, was dismembered, hearing that from a turkish official, following his death. very devastating for his family, co-workers. this is one scene. there was another facility that's now become of interest and that is the residence of the consulate general, the person who leads the saudi consulate. we're told he's no longer in the country. he has departed turkey, presumably for saudi arabia. but it's that scene of his residence that's become interesting to investigators. because cctv showed o

. >> we're joined by a cnn legal analyst and josh campbell. josh, if i could begin with you. let's get to that issue. this is a background check. there has been a lot of back and forth here about what belongs in a background check and in this investigation that the fbi has now contacted. would the fbi normally be interested if a nominee like brett kavanaugh presents a certain account of the way they drank and so on? even many years ago. and others who were there with them say the opposite? >> it would, but as i watched the interview, i couldn't help but think it is illuminating, it is compelling, it is utterly inconsequential because as we speak right now senators are reading the final report that was handed over from the fbi. that gets to your question, what is in that report. it doesn't include all this information. in a criminal investigation there are no limits. in this case, the background investigation, they're set by the parameters of the white house. all these allegations coming forward, it doesn't appear that the white house or senate care enough about what's being s

also special agent at the fbi, josh campbell. , the white house told the fbi to expand the scope of whom they can talk to. how might that impact the investigation now? >> so, jake, i think there are still questions surrounding what that specifically means. and what i mean by that is, there have been conflicting reports whether this means that the fbi can now go out on its own and chase down whatever lead that it thinks needs -- is warranted, additional investigation. or whether the fbi has to go back to the white house and say, here's what we found. here is what we want to do, and then essentially get permission to go beyond that. the reason a distinction is important, i think what's happened today is you have the white house realizing, if they're being crushed by this news cycle, there are a lot of people irate at this notion that the fbi would be limited in scope. if you want a serious investigation, you do a thorough investigation. but to set guard rails and parameters, i think they're feeling the blow back against that, and i

joining me now cnn counterterrorism analyst phil mudd and cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell. josh, we talked about this with alisyn last hour and it's a good question. is there a document which actually spells out exactly what the fbi has been asked to do? the presidnt was out there yesterday claiming they can go ask whatever they want, our reporting is it's not quite that expansive. so is there a definitive record? >> so there's some kind of directive, we don't know whether that was in the form of a letter or e-mail, but there has been conversations, communications from the white house to the fbi essentially dictating what it is they can look at. we've described this as the white house being the client in this matter. so the fbi serves as the investigative ample, this he do these background checks, hand the records over to the white house they determine suitability. but to your point it's an important one because i think we've seen a little shift, a spin cycle going on. over the weekend our reporting talking to people very familiar with the investigation what we were told is

this investigation, we have with us our cnn law enforcement analyst, former fbi supervisory agent josh campbellcurity analyst, former assistant secretary at the department of homeland security, juliette ciam. i understand you have new information about some of the weapons the suspect used in the mass murder. >> that's right. we're learning new details. according to the criminal complaint filed by prosecutors, they indected four weapons were recovered at the scene of the synagogue shooting. a law enforcement official familiar with the scene tells us at least three of the weapons, .357 hand guns were purchased legally by the shooter. there have been questions remaining all the firearms were purchased legally, whether they were purchased illegally. three of them were lawfully purchased. it remains whether the fourth, the ar-15 rifle was purchased legally or illegally, but that's something we continue to dig into, i'm sure investigators are doing the same. the question has come up, how did the suspect gain access to the weapons. we're told at least three of the four were lawfully purchased. >> juli

discuss this further is former secret service agent joe funk, and now cnn law enforcement analyst josh campbell. thank you both for being here, and josh, thank you for your help throughout the day yesterday. what would you say, josh, is what the fbi is doing right now, and shimon is laying out where things seem to be standing at the moment? >> there are two aspects here that are major focus. you have the forensic examination. we have devises, we have evidence that law enforcement officers will be processing and each is a clue, a potential gold mine to determine who was the person behind this, is there evidence of dna, hair fibers, the signature, all that piece. you showed the map earlier, which was incredible. the number of potential crime scenes here that we're now dealing with, from coast to coast. so the fbi and law enforcements will be doing from los angeles to new york is working with the different agencies, working with law enforcement to track back where the packages came from. the reason why we're not getting answers right now at least as far as whether they're zeroing in on someone is

let's break it down now with josh campbell, mark sade and robin sax. thank you all. you guys should know with fbi experience and law enforcement experience. so, mark, this report that kavanaugh was involved in a bar fight in 1985, does this factor into the investigation, do you think? >> it wouldn't normally. on the sf-86 the standard national security form even as a federal judiciary nominee, he does not require security clearance by virtue of his position he is deemed to be trustworthy but they still fill out that form because it's a great first set and then has a senate application paperwork he fills out too. but being questioned by the police would never come up on the form. it could potentially come up in an interview or perhaps a colleague or friend may say something, but that would never have come up normally. >> especially if you weren't the person -- well, apparently he threw ice, but i don't think he was the one that was at the center of it. robin, how far should the fbi be going to figure out if kavanaugh is telling the truth about his drinking? >> well, y

josh campbell a former fbi supervisory agent. dana, did the president make this week harder for his supreme court pick and republicans with his comments today? i know you have new reporting? >> with his comments, i'm not so sure, he certainly -- no question gave the judge some heartburn in saying publicly he wants the investigation to go where it leads, but it's not so much the president. because he isn't holding the cards, it is the three senators, republican senators who have been very strong and very sort of cohesive, which is another interesting thing here, when you look at the raw math an the numbers. the republicans and the president can only afford to lose two republicans, essentially, and/or two senators on the republican side. and if these three senators stick together as they have so far. and as i am told they intend to as long as they can, they have enormous power. they have the power to determine what happens. so that really matters more than anything, and i am told that they individually made calls to the white house

. >> with me now, cnn law enforcement analyst and former fbi supervisory special agent, josh campbellr federal prosecutor, elli honan dprks. so one white house official says the white house has made it clear to the fbi that agents are not limited in their expanded background search. translation? >> so we have two interpretations here. either the white house is caving and they're moving beyond this narrow scope that we've been reporting through the weekend. >> kind of sounds like it, from what the president has said earlier today. >> that's what it sounds like. and i think they're probably updating their messaging on depending on what he just told the entire world. if you look at that press conference, which is fascinating, he went from saying that, you know, yeah, they can do whatever they want with the caveat, what is within reason, to now it appears according to the reporting that they're letting the fbi take those handcuffs off, actually do a thorough investigation. we'll see if this is just spin or if this is a new avenue of investigation for the bureau. >> what are you thinking?

. >> why is it so significant, josh campbell, for the fbi chief to refer to these bombs as i.e.d.s? >> it was very important. there was a lot of detail in that press conference but two striking things on the larger narrative of what this may or may not be, one saying these are not hoax devices and the other saying this person appears to be a partisan. with respect to the devices and the definitive statement by the fbi director, there's been some debate whether these were inert, whether it was some kind of hoax. there were rediidiculous claim t maybe this was a false flag situation. when all signed are pointing in one direction, it seems like there were people who wanted a certain narrative to be true, where investigators, we don't look at things through that lens. my bomb technician who is went through them looked at these and said these were dangerous, these were improvised explosive devices. it goes a long way towards saying this was not some conspiracy or -- >> it shows these were bombs. one of the details in these packages, talking about these 13 i.e.d.s, certain included target

. >> let's go to the ground right now to josh campbell, cnn law enforcement analyst.ere is a lot of commotion going on around you. you are outside the residents of the saudi consul general inb istanbul. what is going on? >> reporter: a flurry of activity started about two hours ago. this isn't the consulate. this is the residence of a consul general, the person in charge of the consul who departed the country. the facility has become of great interest because cc tv from the scene showed vehicles leaving that location on the day that the missing journalist disappeared. they came to this facility where we are now. there has been a bit of a tussle regarding whether they could get access to this facility. those discussions went overnight. within about two hours ago we saw a large caravan of police officers arrive here fully kitted out in the moon suits. these are the forensic suits. they will be looking for dna evidence, any sign that the body of the missing journalist is in this location. within the last ten minutes investigators came out to clear out some of the journal

josh campbell is joining me outside the consulate where khashoggi entered and disappeared.yst and supervisory agent. there's been a lot of activity there overnight and yesterday. what exactly do we know, though, about what happened inside the consulate on october 2nd? >> yeah, we're here outside the saudi consulate, which is the alleged scene of the crime. cnn has been reporting based on information from turkish officials that behind me, inside the facility, the missing journalist, jamal khashoggi, was reportedly tortured, dismembered, and killed in the facility behind me. overnight, you'll recall there was reporting where we were standing at the residence of the saudi consul general. that became of interest because cctv of the day he went missing shows vehicles moving to the residence. officers were processing throughout the night, they spent about nine hours with forensic teams. we have yed to get a read out on what they found. but obviously, there's a lot of information that's damning that has been coming to light, things we have been reporting to include the members of
