i want to bring in cnn's law enforcement analyst and former fbi supervisory special agent josh campbellorsey is back with us, a retired police sergeant. josh, we're still waiting for more information from the officers at the scene. >> yes, we're waiting for any indication from law enforcement that there may have been a second shooter. oftentimes you will have someone say they saw more than one person with a weapon, which is a challenge for law enforcement, because if it turns out it was a single shooter, they're essentially trying to prove a negative. nevertheless they have to run that to ground, they have to ensure they're only dealing with one person. the way they do that is by interviewing people, if there's cctv footage around the area, they'll want to consult that as well. you have a community that will remain at a state of high alert. >> josh, are you surprised it's taking so long? >> there is no time frame on these. if you look at the multiple scenes involved, you have the incident on the freeway following this traffic stop. you had the subject fleeing. there could have been peop

let's talk about this a little bit more with former fbi supervisory special agent josh campbell.bing through different 15 crime scenes because of how wide sfred this was. they're processing cars and looking at all the forensic evidence that they can. what are they looking for in terms of a motive? >> it's a great question. i think at the outset we should all be prepared that we may not find out what the motive is. i've been talking to sources on the ground and as you mentioned, this investigation is underway but thus far authorities have not identified any piece of evidence that leads them to a particular motive. and i can tell you looking at this through an investigative lens, again, this doesn't appear to be an incident that was premeditated and plotted out. i think what we're going to find out, and "the new york times" reporting is so key about the notion that he was fired. i want to look at characteristics in a pattern and think about what transfired. if he is fired, that is an authority figure controlling his life and impacting him. that's not that dissimilar from a traffic
