our cnn security correspondent, josh campbell, joins us now.ment to take this job, didn't he? >> that's right. he also came out of the gate on day one in this job as a new capitol police chief, he sat down with cnn. we talked about a number of topics, including the aftermath of the january 6th insurrection. we talked about how the department is reforming, as well as future threats that loom on the horizon. now, i asked him specifically for his view on those politicians who continue to downplay the severity of the january 6th insurrection. take a listen to what he said. >> i cannot waste my time worrying about -- how somebody interprets a tape. i know what the men and women of this agency went through. i nknow the chanllenges they fad and the courage they displayed that day. it was a horrific time. i believe that in my heart. >> but what's your view when people say, well, this was tourism or this was a love fest? we saw the video of your officererofficer e officers on the receiving end of the violence. how do you characterize it? >> i don't agre

cnn's josh campbell is in california. dfires burning at this point right now than at any time in the last decade? >> reporter: that's right. good morning from here out west. we see this part of the country, a powder keg in so many places already ablaze in so many others. looking at the number of fires. talking nearly 67 large fires burning as we speak. those fires alone, 1 million acres burned nearly. this is 2 million acres just since the start of this year. talking about an incredible amount of damage here. new this morning, as of 12:01 today we're hearing from the agency responsible for federal fire coordination in the pacific northwest. they are now moving to level five, their highest level of preparedness. what that means is we're going to see additional resources pour in from other areas. now all federally qualified firefighters are ready to fight the fires. >> such dangerous work for them. josh campbell, good to have you on the scene. >>> thanks to all of you for joining us. we'll see you tomorrow morning. i'm poppy

cnn security correspond josh campbell is following that story for us. what happened, josh?y act of violence jechl in tucson, arizona. a 35-year-old murder suspect is in custody and in critical condition after a shootout with police. authorities believe the suspect set a fire at a residence and then went to a nearby park where he flagged down two emts, he began pointing in the direction of the fire, and without warning, brandished a firearm and shot at the medics, hitting one of them in the head, shooting another in the arm and the chest. police say as that shooting was taking place at the nearby park, fire personnel were already responding to the fire at the residence. the suspect then went there and started shooting at firefighters. one neighbor was struck and killed. a firefighter and another bystander were shot and sustained nine life-threatening injuries. as this was going down, firefighters radioed to the police that they were receiving gunfire. the suspect fled. this is how that ended according to the police chief, that encounter. take a listen. >> he rams the vehicle

josh campbell has more. >> reporter: an incredibly violent fourth of july weekend as we continue to seehooting from coast to coast. according to data compiled by the gun violence archive, at least 150 people were killed by gun violence and more than 400 shootings across the country since friday as major cities nationwide confront a surge in violent crime. in ft. worth, texas eight were injured sunday morning at a shooting near a car wash after an argument transpired between a group of men, one of whom opened f fire. most victims believed to be innocent bystanders. in nolfolk, four children were shot including a 6-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, 16-year-old boy and girl. police say an investigation into the accident is ongoing. in dallas, texas police responding to two separate shootings on july 4, one of which involved five men who were shot, three of victims pronounced dead at a hospital, one had been shot multiple times in a street disturbance authorities said. in chicago, 14 were killed including a national guard member that according to affiliate wls. two police officers were woun

. >> cnn's josh campbell conducted that first interview with the capitol police chief. as a failure by law enforcement and then what did he say? >> that has been a key question, whether there things that could have been done differently, run up to the january 6th insurrection. he was quick to defend the u.s. capitol police that said look, this is a department that deals with protests all the time, the reason you don't hear about them is things go well, there aren't issues. he said there were mistakes surrounding january 6th that need to be investigated, but reiterated his support for men and women in uniform he now oversees. take a listen. >> speaking of january 6th, when you look at that day, what preceded that, do you view that as a failure by the capitol police? >> i don't think it is fair to say that this department is a failure or dysfunctional. it is not fair to say because it is not true. fact of the matter is there were failures that day, doesn't speak to the quality of the people in this organization. i think this is an excellent department and one of my goals i

cnn's josh campbell is joining us now. josh, what can you tell us here?er: yeah, good morning, brianna. this garnering a lot of attention. authorities say four people were arrested on friday after an employee at this hotel, saw something suspicious and called police that leading authorities to obtain search warrants on two hotel rooms. now, during the course of that search, they located this cache of weapons. this hotel was a block away from where this baseball game is set to take place tomorrow on tuesday. now, one local media report citing law enforcement officers police feared this was possibly preparation for some type of mass shooting that causing the federal bureau of investigation to come out very quickly with a statement trying to ratchet down any talk of terrorism. we have no reason to believe this incident was connected to terrorism or threat directed at the all-star game. the fbi said we're not aware of any threat to the all-star game events, players, venn use at this time. you don't often see daylight between the feds and local law enforcement

josh campbell, thanks so much. >>> let's bring in the president of the fraternal order of police. he retired last year as a deputy from the st. charles louisiana sheriff's office. thank you so much for being here. law enforcement officers do so much to keep us all safe. we appreciate it. i want to ask you, the four police officers who testified yesterday, they said they cannot move on until there is an investigation and accountability, not just for the criminals who attacked the capitol but for those who hired the hit man, as one of the officers put it. what is the position of the fop on a commission or committee investigating january 6th? >> well, first, let me start by saying that the officers who bravely fought off the rioters and defended the capitol on january 6th have been through hell. and they deserve our undying gratitude. i've had very detailed conversations, too, with officer fanone. and i'm available to talk with him any time he wants even if it's just to talk. but i ask you to just keep in mind we have 362,000 members across this country. and my job is to do my absolu

our josh campbell joins me now.ng. >> the other person on left was a another defendant. both there on the day. and in this case we've seen so many of the images from the capitol that day. but this case underscoring all of that rage and anger that we saw with our own eyes didn't simply go away after january 6 and in this case what prosecutors did was they convinced a federal judge that this person remained a threat. he was released on bail but after authorities discovered a firearm at his home, as well as some bomb-making material and determines that he purchased 40 weapons online they convinced the judge that he remained a threat to public safety. authorities say they noticed one online post in which he said, and i'll quote, the only voice these people will listen to is violence. buckle armor or just stay at home. the last line appearing to reference gearing up for some kind of battle. now what the attorney said for the suspect is that authorities got it all wrong. it is a misunderstanding and describes his client a

cnn security correspondent josh campbell is here. josh, you sat down with the new chief.estion about it right now. >> absolutely. you know, he knows that this is a challenge he's stepping into but he's someone who's been in law enforcement for over 40 years. this was a nationwide selection. they picked him to lead this department that has come under such scrutiny. and despite that scrutiny, what we're hearing from him is that he's not afraid to step up and actually talk to the press. if you remember back after the insurrection, weeks went by before we heard anyone from capitol police leadership stepping to the microphones. here he is less than 24 hours on the job sitting down with me, taking our questions. we talked about the insurrection, we talked about some of the reforms that are in place. we also talked about this looming threat. a lot of it goes back to what you just showed at that rally. it's these ongoing election lies that he is having to contend with because experts tell us that there's this bizarre notion that maybe trump will be reinstated. if that doesn't hap
