cnn's josh campbell is in chico, california, near the dixie wildfire.o what are you hearing there, seeing from the people who live there and the people trying to stop that fire? >> reporter: victor, we're getting new details on that devastation that hit the town of greenville. we're told that over 100 homes were devastated. we're also told that four people remain unaccounted for. not everyone heeded the warnings to evacuate. now, the sheriff here, who is a native of greenville, he spoke yesterday about the devastation that hit his hometown. take a listen. >> despite efforts, the firefighters and law enforcement, the fire spread into the community of greenville. for those of you that don't know, i'm a lifelong resident of greenville, and i want to start by saying, my heart is crushed by what has occurred there, and to the folks that have lost residences and businesses, i've met some of them already. their life is now forever changed. and all i can tell you is, i'm sorry. >> reporter: just devastating. now, as far as where things stand now, this fire here

i'm josh campbell, back to you. >> and joining me, now, is meteorologist, derek van dam. derek, two separate continents. two simultaneous disasters. what more can you tell us? >> yeah. the fires, over the western u.s., as well as the fires across southeastern europe are, both, dangerous and unpredictable due to the nature of the wind and the drought conditions that are in place. just in greece, alone, the past 24 hours, nearly-100 new fires. of which, 64 are still active. so, they are making some progress in some of the smaller fires. but, of course, as the reporter just discussed, a moment ago, they continue to approach certain populated areas, including the suburbs of athens. and it's not just greece we are talking about italy. we are talking about southwestern portions of turkey. you can see the hot spots from this modus satellite image. scattered about much of the mediterranean and it's all under the backdrop of extreme heat that has taken place across this region. a heat dome has formed. not much to push that stagnant air mass out of the way. so we continue to see th

cnn's josh campbell, he joins me now from chico, california. they making progress? i just don't understand how they keep a handle on something so big. >> reporter: it is a herculean task for sure, jim. it's still daybreak on the west coast, but there are over 5,000 firefighters beyond this haze of smoke that are trying to contain this fire, trying to make progress. we did learn as far as the city of greenville, we got an update there on the number of people that are missing. authorities said originally there were ten. that number has been cut down to four. but still, four people unaccounted for. after authorities did their modelling, they sent word out to this area, a mandatory evacuation. they said people still remain behind. they were searching for them at this hour. it is important to note, jim, authorities, whenever they send out these evacuation orders, this is based on rigorous modelling from the california state wildfire agency. they're trying to predict where it's going, ensure people get out of the way. sadly in greenville, not everyone

cnn's josh campbell is near the flames in chico, >> reporter: the images we are seeing and the storiesating. over 300,000 acres burned. you can see this plume of smoke. one indication that shows you what firefighters are battling with is the winds here are moving so rapidly, 30-40 miles an hour they are contending with. you can see this dixie fire, some of the neighboring fires in and around this area as well. just to give you a sense of how fast it's moving overnight, officials tell us one acre per second. devastating images from the town of greenville, which was ravaged last night. homes, businesses, schools, flames ripping through part of this town, really showing you that no place here is immune as these wildfires go from location to location. it's important to note that we have to focus on the cause. experts continue to tell us that climate change is a major factor here. i'll read you a statement from the california state fire agency. while wildfires are a natural part of california's landscape, the fire season is starting earlier and ending later each year. climate change is a ke
