josh campbell reporting for us.for joining us. so what did you make of the opening arguments from both the defense and the prosecution? did one side seem to make their case better than the other? >> yeah, wolf. look, i am a criminal defense attorney but i -- but i side with the prosecution in this case, at least so far. i think they came out far stronger in opening. you know, they said look she is a police officer. she should know better. she's been an officer for 26 years. she failed her duties. she failed her badge and that's correct. you know, the defense got up and said she -- um -- made a mistake. she is a human being. now, wolf, if it's you and i making a mistake pulling a glock instead of a taser, that's one thing. but this is an officer. she's held to a higher standard. and uh, that mistake in this trial needs to be reasonable, as well. you know, did she make that mistake in good faith? was it reasonable that she pulled a glock that is yellow -- i'm sorry, a glock that's black, versus a taser that's yellow?

what are those aggravating factors, and how successful do you think they will be when our josh campbellpolice officers generally serve about two-thirds of their time in prison and about one-third on supervised release? >> reporter: poppy, i think the prosecution is going to focus on two things on aggravation here. one would be an abuse of trust. this is a police officer who has been well-trained, over 20 years on the job. she should have known better. by giving her a firearm and by giving her a taser, the people of minnesota are placing their trust in her to do the right thing, to follow her training and to be careful, and she wasn't. the second thing is she discharged this firearm -- >> hold that thought. i'm sorry to interrupt, i just want to get to this press conference outside of the courthouse. let's listen in here. >> at 20, daunte could have gone into anything. maybe he could have gone into the building trade, maybe he could have started a business. what we know is he was a young, new dad and he was so proud of his son daunte jr. we know that he loved his mom and he loved his dad

i was speaking with my colleague josh campbell who has been reporting on this throughout and he notedle assault rifle used by police obviously fires a larger round and with greater force and distance compared to a service pistol. police departments train officers that they are responsible for every round they fire. does an officer with an assault rifle have an even greater responsibility to know what might be behind their target? >> it would be the exact same. i mean, listen. i can speculate but i can't promise you that if one of those officers had fired a 9 millimeter or a glock, it would not have penetrated that wall there in the dressing room. i don't know what type of material they use there. they certainly don't fortify dressing rooms. you never expect this to happen. so, we can what-if this from now on but the fact of the matter is what the officers did in that moment, based on what they knew, was reasonable. and it had a tragic, tragic outcome and i am so sorry that this family's having to deal with this unspeakable grief as a result of their actions. >> all of our thoughts wit

anderson. >> josh campbell, appreciate it.ri. so sara, i am wondering what you made of kim potter oi he's testimony today? did she help her case? >> anderson, you know, her testimony was really a hail mary and i am not sure that i would have done differently because ultimately, the goal of the defense here was to tug at the heart of -- hearts of the jurors here. and -- but in terms of the meat of her testimony, and the explanations and admissions that she made, i think it really hurt her. certainly, didn't help her, right? they -- they put the weapons next to each other and compared them. the shape, the size, the weight, the -- part of the body that they were holstered and then, in fact, how much more effort it took to get -- to draw the -- the taser, versus the glock. and she confirmed all those facts, and then she went further to say that she never, in her 26 years of being an officer, had deployed a taser. well, that goes straight to count two and criminal negligence, right? the idea that, you know, you have had all these c

cnn's josh campbell has all the details for you. >> i can't breathe, man. >> reporter: for the firste murder of george floyd last year, former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin is admitting responsibility. pleading guilty wednesday to federal civil rights charges that he violated floyd's constitutional rights. it's all part of a plea deal for the man convicted of killing floyd last year by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes. in addition to the more than two decades chauvin was sentenced to by the state, prosecutors have asked for a concurrent sentence of 25 years on federal charges. adding fewer than three years to his overall prison time. far less than the life sentence he could have received. in court, prosecutors asked chauvin, as mr. floyd lay on the ground handcuffed and unresisting, you kept your knees on mr. floyd's neck and body even after mr. floyd became unresponsive, correct? correct, chauvin said. when asked if he agreed the offense resulted in floyd's death, he gave the same one-word response. afterwards, floyd's brothers had mixed reactions. >> i wis

cnn's security correspondent josh campbell is in minneapolis for us. to fight these federal charges. the legal woes that this former minneapolis police officer has faced, he was convicted on state charges in the murder of george floyd but as is so often the case, the federal government came in and looked at the situation. any time there's an officer use of force, they'll determine whether or not there are federal charges. they determined that, yes, derek chauvin in their view violated george floyd's civil rights during that incursion. i'll read you part of the indictment. the federal government alleges that chauvin willfully deprived george floyd of the right, security protected by the constitution, laws of the united states to be free from an unreasonable seizure which includes the right to be trooi free from the use of unreasonable force by a police officer. again, the big development here is that although chauvin had originally pleaded not guilty to that charge, we now expect tomorrow he will change that plea to guilty. what's so fascinating, here wh

cnn's josh campbell is on the ground for us in oxford, michigan. >> reporter: christine and laura, a nation plagued by gun violence is preparing to bury more of its own, this time teenagers. three people were shot and killed on tuesday in oxford, michigan. the victims a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, all believed to be students at the high school where the shooting took place. eight other people were injured in this incident. now, authorities have identified the shooter as a 15-year-old sophomore. he was taken into custody. his parents later going to the sheriff's station where he was being held, invoking his right not to cooperate with authorities. we are told that he is not speaking with police about this incident. now, police received a call at 12:51 p.m. of an active shooter and told they would receive over 100 911 calls. 25 law enforcement agencies responding to the scene. we're told that within five minutes of the first call, the shooter was taken into custody without incident. >> preliminary investigation revealed that the weapon used in the shooting was purchas

>> let's bring in our cnn security correspondent josh campbell.d of statements in the trial? >> reporter: yeah, it was a powerful day, the first day in the former brooklyn center police officer charged with manslaughter in the death of daunte wright. the prosecution and defense laying out their perspective cases. the prosecution calling the actions a betrayal of her badge, her oath, a betrayal of the public truth. prosecutors pointing out this was not a rookie officer, this was an officer who had several years of experience and pointing to that moment mixing up a firearm for a taser, saying this wasn't something that an experienced officer should have done. the defence by contrast calling in an accident, calling it a mistake, also pointing out this officer had never pulled her weapon before, never fired it, pointing to her record. at one point seeming to blame daunte wright himself, take a listen. >> she was trained to be aware of the differences between her gun and her taser and importantly, she was also trained about the risks of pulling the wro

i want to bring in josh campbell, cnn security cover. llowing this case very closely and has been covering the trial for us. josh, the fact that this jury has been deliberating for more than 24 hours, that they sent a note previously asking about what happens if we can't reach a consensus. as you've followed the details of this trial what do you think they are struggling with or could have been struggling with? >> reporter: one thing that's clear is this is a case with playersor layers of complexity. some people might look at the video and draw their own conclusion of what transpired on that day, the multiple angles of what was submitted into evidence, but what is important to realize is the jury has been instructed on what to consider and not to consider and it's important to remind our viewers what these charges r.one thing is clear neither the prosecution nor the defense are saying that kim potter intended to kill daunte wright. show's not been charged with murder. what she has been charged with by the state, one count of first-degree

our josh campbell has more on this. we were talk about this on friday. it is such a tragedy.e now have her name. and soon the public is going to see -- going to have transparency here and see the video and hear the 911 calls and understand what happened. >> reporter: we're hoping to get some of those key questions answered about the moment the shooting happened. this happened on thursday at department store in north hollywood. police say they received calls of an assault in progress as officers were on the way. that call was escalated to shots fired. as they arrived, they encountered a female who was suffering bleeding as well as other injuries. they believe she had been assaulted. they also found a suspect who witnesses say was assaulting that woman with a bike chain. something happened that caused one of those officers to open fire on that suspect. he was shot and killed as authorities began a sweep of the department store looking for other potential victims. they found something truly devastating. listen. >> the call was upgraded to possible shots fired. officers encounter

cnn's josh campbell joins us from l.a. what do her parents want us to know? just heard from the parents of this 14-year-old girl, valentina orellana-peralta. they were basically bearing their hearts. this was their opportunity to respond to what transpired on that day last week at that department store. the lapd just released that body camera footage showing the moment an officer opened fire on a suspect who was assaulting people in that store. one of those rounds piercing the wall and killing this 14-year-old girl. we heard from valentina's mother, who was actually in the dressing room with her that day. she said they had come to this department store, they were looking for christmas presents. she said they heard some screams and went down and sat down on a bench that was inside that dressing room and they started to pray. she said the next thing that she remembers is there was some type of commotion. she says something impacted her daughter. they both went to the ground. she would later learn that was a bullet that was fired through the wall. her daughter d

chris, i got a note from one of my colleagues, josh campbell, who is following along with me and sending me notes here. he said what strikes him is the kid's accuracy with the weapon, that he fired 12 rounds and that he hit 11 people, three of them dead, eight injured. he seems to be pretty accurate with a gun. does that stick out to you in this situation? >> that is the first thing that came to mind when i first read about it. i had read 15 to 20 shots, and when you see and hear about the 11 very serious injuries and the three deaths, that's pretty good shooting, i hate to say, and we now find out that he posted that he was training somewhere, firing that weapon that had only been bought four days earlier by his dad the day after thanksgiving. such an unspeakable, heartbreaking tragedy, don. a lot of things come to mind here about whether there was some red flags and the undersheriff seemed to be alluding to that at the very beginning of this press conference, where he sort of started off with, if you see something, say something, and there is a lot of internet chatter about there being

cnn's josh campbell is live in minneapolis joining us live with the details on this.of the courthouse here. we're in district court in st. paul. derek chauvin, the former minneapolis police officer, who was previously convicted on state murder charges, we know he was also charged by the federal government with civil rights violations. he just changed his plea today from not guilty to guilty. we understand now from prosecutors that they will be seeking a 25-year sentence as part of that plea agreement. now that was not the only case that chauvin was facing. the case involving george floyd. prosecutors allege that back in 2017, he violated the civil rights of a 14-year-old juvenile, allegedly assaulting that juvenile with a flashlight, choking him. again, part of this discussion today, he also pleaded guilty to that case. now we didn't hear much from chauvin today. he did answer some questions from prosecutors. they went through during parts of this plea agreement asking him and i'll read some of it. they asked him, did you keep george floyd down on the ground beyond th

"you kept your knees on mr. floyd's neck and body even after mr. floyd became unresponsive, correct? correct, chauvin said. when asked if agreed that it resulted in floyd's death, he gave the same one-word response. floyd's brothers had mixed reaction. >> i wanted to hear that at the very beginning. right now it don't mean nothing. it don't hold weight. >> to me a blue wall fell and it never falls. it's opening up and they all say it was wrong. >> reporter: andon, it was a powerful day in court today. we saw the coming together of multiple people impacted by the actions of this former officers. there was also a juvenile who derek chauvin pleaded guilty to assaulting. at the end of the hearing, george floyd's brother turned to this boy and said "it's a good this boy and said "it's a good day for justice." >> thank you. appreciate
