. >> josh campbell is following this for us today. sh, we're learning that the suspect was previously charged with a felony, yet he was still able to purchase not one, but two firearms recently? >> reporter: that's right. let's look at the timeline. in 2019 this mass shooter was pulled over by police in michigan. the officers ask if he had a firearm and he said he was armed. he was charged with a felony because he had a gun, but not a license to carry. he plead to a lesser charge to having a weapon in the vehicle. because he was not convicted of a felony, he was not prohibited from going on to buy additional firearms. we don't know how he got the guns used in this mass shooting, but this situation raising questions about the laws there and why the prosecutor didn't go for the felony. this is also raising questions about red flag laws. can someone actually go to a judge and request that someone, because of the signs of -- troubling signs, actually be prevented from getting firearms. i'll read for you what the shooter's father told cnn a

cnn's josh campbell in los angeles for us. ishop, it seems, knew the man who has been arrested? >> reporter: that's right. that is key because it does not appear that this was random. i'll walk you through the timeline. on saturday deacon goes to the bishop's home because he has missed a meeting, and he finds him unresponsive and pronounced dead. the sheriff says it was a tipster who helped them solve the case. the unidentified person told police a mn in his 60s named carlos medina had made comments about the bishop owing him money. they say me dine na was married to the housekeeper. detectives reportedly sound footage sh shoeg the suspect's car around the home. authorities tried to arrested medina yesterday. in a standoff him taken into custody by a tactical team. robert luna told us the motive is unclear although reports of some type of financial dispute between the suspect and the bishop. the sheriff says his investigators have not drawn any conclusions. >> i'm not standing here in front of you telling you it's a dispute ove

cnn's security correspondent josh campbell is covering this for us so you were the first to report onis arrest. what more do you know? >> reporter: so i heard from a law enforcement source last night that the suspect was taken into custody. that call came shortly after that occurred. it happened in riverside county which is about an hour east of los angeles, the pico-robertson neighborhood where this -- these two took place is an area with a large jewish population. you mentioned wednesday morning you have people there working -- walking around the area. a witness says a man is leaving synagogue and a drive-by shooting occurs. somebody drives by, opens fire, that person is shot. the very next morning another person in the neighborhood also shot. now there's still a lot we don't know about this suspect. about his motivation, about his past. we do know that the los angeles police department is investigating this as a hate crime. also read you a statement we got in from los angeles mayor karen bass. she says that these attacks against members of our jewish community in the pico-robertson

more than a year in prison if convicted in the fatal shooting on the set of his moved hie "ru" josh campbell has the details from los angeles. >> reporter: alec baldwin now criminally charged. and facing involuntary manslaughter charges. and the charging documents filed tuesday against baldwin and the set's armerer, the district's attorney described an atmosphere of unsafe practices alleging that baldwin was negligent both as the actor when was holding the gun as well as in his role as co-producer. one example, the d.a. claimed a training session for at least an hour or more was scheduled but the training consisted of only approximately 30 minutes as according to reed baldwin was distracted and talking on his cellphone to his family during the training and that baldwin failed to conduct industry standard safety checks on the gun he was holding before manipulating the weapon although baldwin has maintained he did not pull the trigger, but for the weapon to trigger, it had to have been depressed or pressed. attorneys say their respective clients are innocent and they intend to fight the charge

. >> let's go to cnn's josh campbell who is live in los angeles up and early this morning. t more are you learning about what happened here? i know there are so many people heartbroken that this bishop has been killed. >> reporter: sarah, good morning to you. 65-year-old carlos medina was arrested yesterday by a los angeles sheriff's department tactical team after an hours' long standoff. authorities say bishop david o'connell who was renowned for his work as a community piece maker was found dead saturday in his home. a deacon went to check on him after the bishop was late for a meeting. the unidentified person told police that medina had been acting strange and made comments about the bishop owing him money. detectives were also able to gather surveillance footage near the crime scene which showed an suv pushing into the driveway and departing later. the motive right now is unclear and although there have been reports of some type of financial dispute, luna said his investigators have not yet drawn any conclusions. >> i'm not here telling you it's a dispute over money yet.

josh campbell is following this for us. e its decision and what could be the larger ramifications here? >> jake, this wide reaching decision stemmed from a case involving a texas man. for background on him, he was accused of gun crimes beginning in late 2020 and allegedly shot at someone after selling drugs, shot at a police officer and opened fire inside a whataburger fast food joint after his credit card was declined. he's facing state charges for that but the federal charge stems from guns authorities found out his home, which were unlawful to possess because he had a restraining order against him after he allegedly beat up his ex-girlfriend. this conservative court ruled despite that violent past and that restraining order, he can still have guns and the rational stems from the landmark 2022 supreme court decision you mentioned that determined that gun laws have to be tied to historical precedent. i'll read part of that ruling. they say courts are required to assess whether modern firearms regulations are consistent with

cnn's josh campbell is a former fbi supervisory special agent.looking for specifically? >> wolf, this is what's called the damage assessment phase, basically trying to determine was there a threat to u.s. national security that was posed by this intelligence collection platform. and the fbi, you know, there's no better agency out there that can look at and re-create a device assuming that it actually survived that shoot down. so they'll be looking at that. when a lot of people think about the fbi they think about dna analysis, forensic analysis, firearm analysis. there's actually an entire division at the fbi laboratory in quantico. these are the tech wizards that would create those devices. when we were overseas we would capture a particular device and take it to this team for exploitation. it makes sense to me this would be the team looking at what this was and stands up to scrutiny. the chinese have said this was a meteorological assessment platform. we'll see if that ends up being the case. the fbi they're leading this and this will be a mult

josh campbell is digging into the data for us. he joins us now. josh, good morning to you. so there was no profile here of a mass shooter, i am told, right? a michigan state shooter, he compares to other recent incidents, i'm sure. but what is -- is there a profile for a mass shooter? and do these -- especially the latest shooters -- do they stack up to that or line up with that? >> yeah, don. there is no typical profile. there are commonalities. the secret service went back and looked at 180 recent mass shooters. i'll show you as we throw up that graphic, i'll break down what they found. particularly as it relates to age. the overall majority of recent shooters were young men. but as you look at this michigan state shooter, 43 years old. he fell within that age range that makes up about 20% of recent mass shooters. as we look at the next graph as it pertains to race. 34%, about a third of recent mass shooters were african american. so when you combine age and you combine race, he is somewhat of an outlier. but, don, one area where he appears to so closely resemble mass sho

now our colleague josh campbell reported there are pieces of that suspected spy balloon that have arrivedco for intelligence officials to begin coming. i -- examining. yesterday evening our colleague did see what appeared to be officials with the navy coming back, items that were being brought back. we did reach out to the navy to ask. they would not confirm. we were not able to independently confirm this was related to the balloon. we're talking 47 feet of water. look, we're off the coast of myrtle beach right now. this was miles out from where we were that we went this morning, and they essentially again, told us to turn back around, john. they followed us for a bit to make sure we were turning around. very serious making sure that perimeter stays. they believe this should be an easy recovery because it's only about 47 feet of water that that balloon crashed down to. >> remarkable search effort under way. let's bring the conversation in the room, joining me to share the reporting and insights, manu raju, aisha of npr, jeff mason of reuters and our national security analyst cory. i want

cnn's josh campbell reports that wreckage of it has started arrive at the fbi's lab in quantico, virginia two days after an air force jet shot it out of the sky. the pentagon claims there were three others like it during the previous administration, something several former officials including john bolton disputed over the weekend. a senior current official tells cnn that the intelligence community is prepared to brief key members of the former administration, several of them telling us they have yet to be contacted. as for how the three other incidents went undiscovered after the fact, norad's commanding general used that phrase you might not have heard before to explain. >> i will tell you that we did not detect those threats. and that's a domain awareness gap that we have to figure out. but i don't want to go into further detail. >> further detail as what exactly a domain awareness gap. maybe it came to a fubar gap. that's just a guess. john miller joins us now with more of what the fbi analysts could learn. can you walk us through what the fbi is doing right now at quantico? >> so whe

cnn's josh campbell joins us now. you were the first reporter to break the news of this arrest. what more are we learning about how serious the threat was and what the plans were? >> reporter: this arrest happened in riverside, california, i got a call from a source shortly after that happened late yesterday, about an hour east of los angeles where these two shootings took place in the peko robertson area of l.a., which has a large jewish population. on wednesday morning witnesses say that a man, a jewish man, was leaving synagogue, a car drives by, opens fire twice, he is struck. the very next morning another man, also according to witnesses walking from synagogue, is shot by a car that was fleeing. now, i was told by a law enforcement source that the license plate of this vehicle was captured. that was key to getting investigators on to the suspect. they put out this be on the lookout alert for a light colored compact car, said they were looking for an asian male. i'm told late yesterday they took this suspect into custody without incident. there is a lot we don't know about h
