let's quickly bring back cnn's josh campbell. and, josh, you've learned a major l.a. area interstate has been shut down. >> that's right. we're getting updates here by the minute. we're learning from the california highway patrol, interstate five, the major north south freeway that services communities north of l.a. that where this fire is currently burning over my shoulder. you can actually see as we pan here, this plume of smoke just continues to billow. this fire now over 5000 acres. now, that freeway shut down is for several different reasons. first, obviously, the fire concern, you know, moving in the direction of the freeway. but also there are multiple evacuation orders that are now in place. so people have to get out of that area at the same time that authorities continue to bring in additional assets in order to try to battle this blaze. sheriff robert luna here was speaking with our colleagues at kcal saying that there were 19,000 people under mandatory evacuation, about 15,000 people that have received evacuation warnings asking the public to take this very

. >> let's get right to cnn's josh campbell up north near the santa clarita fire. josh, what are you seeing this morning? >> well, what you see behind me is what residents of los angeles, those of us who live here, have now become all too common. members of the national guard that have been deployed across the county because of all these fires that we've seen over the past couple of weeks. we're now at the command post, a multi-agency effort for the so-called hughes fire. this is that massive fire that erupted up here north yesterday that ballooning to over 10,000 acres. authorities are still trying to bring that to some sense of containment. thousands of people, 31,000, to be specific, are currently under mandatory evacuation. so a lot of challenging efforts still ahead for authorities here. they worked throughout the night using helicopters, using the chinooks and the blackhawks in order to try to douse those flames with water. one thing we're hearing from authorities is that, you know, if there's any good news in this terrible situation because of those past two

cnn's josh campbell is in los angeles with the very latest on these fires. and josh, let us know kind of what you. >> active firefighter containment efforts continue here in los angeles. that's because yet another wildfire popped up overnight. this one being called the sepulveda fire. you can see behind me as crews are working on those containment efforts at the height of this firefighting attack, they were up to 250 firefighters. authorities tell us right now they have stopped forward movement progress, have it to 40 acres, but we don't have any containment numbers just yet. this area near several homes so far, just dense brush. this appears to be what caught on fire. now, just north of where we are here, firefighters continue to battle another blaze, the so-called hughes fire that kicked off yesterday. we saw numerous firefighters being deployed, aerial assets, the chinook helicopters, the blackhawk helicopters making those water drops, several thousand people continue to be under mandatory evacuation there. authorities say that fire has now ballooned to ov

. >> now, a law enforcement source did tell our cnn's josh campbell that there is, quote, no leadingheory at this time, at what it is that caused the palisades fire, but they are aware of this video, and that is one of the theories they're investigating. >> laura julia vargas jones, thank you so much for that reporting. i want to turn now to l.a. county fire chief anthony marrone for an update on all of the firefighting efforts that are happening tonight. chief, first, let me just begin with where we left off with my colleague on this. many people, of course, want to know why this is ongoing and continuing, but do you have a sense are you prioritizing the how it started just yet? >> well, actually, right now, laura, the our law enforcement partners, along with some federal partners, in addition to the l.a. county fire department arson investigation, members are actively engaged in trying to determine the cause not only of the eton and the palisades fires, but all of the other wildland brush fires that we've suffered over the last seven days. so it's going to take quite a bit of time.
