president obama's back in washington today and this afternoon josh ernest back in the white house pressroom and so was our chief white house correspondent ed henry. how does the white house defend the criticism the president got with so much going on while he was on vacation? >> reporter: they say inside the briefing that the president has been focused on these various national security crises. one of the problems we're dealing with right now though is various senior officials saying various things about how big of a threat isis really is. defense secretary chuck hagel saying this is bigger than the threat from al qaeda pre-9/11. then general martin dempsey who remember last thursday, comments now being clarified by the pentagon but he was basically saying at one point can they be defeated, isis, without addressing that part of the organization that resides in syria, the answer is no. that's what general dempsey said. i just appreciated josh ernest on whether the president agrees. >> you suggested we have to go into syria if we're going to defeat isis. does the president agree with that

while josh ernest at the podium insisted that their going to wait this out. listen. >> we are concerned about the threat that is posed by isil. it is the assessment as stated by the chairman of the joint scheef chiefs of staff, that there's not an active plot under way to attack the u.s. homeland by isil. >> reporter: there are republic chance like lindsey graham saying wait a second, if the standard is just that there's not currently an active plot, that still leaves open a wide possibility that isis could be inching closer to a plot, could be putting plots together that could be hatched in the days, weeks ahead. lindsey graham put out a tough statement a short time ago suggesting that general dempsey was pressured by the white house to pull back on his tough comments about isis last week. listen to what graham had to say yesterday on cnn. >> it's about time now to assume the worst about these guys. rather than underestimating them. they're not the jv team anymore. >> reporter: now, that point about jv team, a reference to the beginning of the year where the

i asked josh ernest a while ago exactly what needed to be clarified about the president's statement. really important for people to understand what the president's approach is. the president was asked specifically about the options that are available to him. the military options that are available to him for dealing with isil in syria. and the fact of the matter is the pentagon and the defense department is still hard at work on developing those options. the president is still considering how those options might fit into the broader more comprehensive strategy that the president has already laid out for dealing with isil. >> okay. >> the fact of the matter -- so if you'll allow me, let me talk about what the comprehensive strategy actually is. there are five components to that strategy. the first is the president believes, and this is most important one, the president believes that iraq's political leaders need to unite that country, unite the country of iraq, to confront the existential threat that isil poses to their country. >> josh, wait, can i stop you on one? >> sure. >> that i

josh ernest doubled down on that when i pressed him today. which is interesting pause pentagon officials when they were asked, said, the military is always ready. if the commander in chief wants a plan, they're putting plans together all the time. so seems to be a little tension between the president and some folks in the cabinet like the defense sect chuck hagel. a week ago was saying this is a bigger threat than al qaeda pre-9/11. what they were trying to do was put the brakes on this march toward military action in syria, and the president may have succeeded in that. but in terms of suggest nothing strategy, it's raising more questions about what is coming in the days ahead. what is he going to do about that. >> real quickly. the president and prime minister of print have the same intelligence information and act on that. the brits obviously moved to heighten their terrorist threat. we did not should we read into significance into that? >> it's interesting. we asked josh earnest about that. he says the department of homeland security is lo
