joining me now is hawaii governor josh green. join us. it has been a little bit more than a month since the devastating maui wildfires became the deadliest in modern united states history. first off, i want to know has my viewers want to know, how are the recovery efforts going there? how are the survivors doing? >> it's going very well. the survivors are so resilient. we are so proud of them. it's amazing to see what they're able to do 36 days after the fire. president biden and his team have been here day and night. we are so grateful for that support. just yesterday or two days ago the secretary of energy helped us rebuild some of our infrastructure. she brought us 95 million dollar grant to do that. people are traumatized. they are going through the faces and stages of grief, as you would imagine. we'll be doing that for sometime. nothing is being rebuilt right. now we are in the cleanup environmental phase. epa folks are there during about three months of cleanup. people will go back to the properties in the next couple of da

joining us now is hawaii governor josh green, governor, welcome to the program. >> thank you.ank you for having me. >> i want to get to lawmakers in a minute. first, can you talk about the number of people who are unaccounted for. i think there was some reporting, expectations that that number could drop, but it really hasn't, so can you give us a sense of what's going on? >> yes, i would like to be really clear about this. while the number was 1,200 for some time, and dropped to 800, and dropped to 385, 385 represents what the fbi and the red cross and other lists have given us. there are currently 41 active cases being investigated that have been mild as missing persons reports to the maui police department. that's the university of active investigations. the number 385 is the list of everyone who in a broad way, will cast a very broad net, we have been able to get a name for. what we would like to do is we would like to see more people file police reports, so instead of just having a first name or just a last name, we have some details so we can get into it. >> i understand

governor josh green will talk about the ongoing response at 6:00 eastern, as shocking new details ares the general president for the international association of firefighters and he's just back from meeting with the firefighters in maui. so, edward, you've compared what they were up against to a david versus goliath situation. just tell us what you heard from those firefighters. >> well, we know that there were winds clocked up to roughly 80 miles an hour, which is essentially a hurricane that they were facing with no rain. maui is a particularly windy island. wind is the most dangerous element when it comes to fire. what they were up against was insurmountable odds. they only have ten engine companies on the island of maui, and lahaina, which is a small city, basically, they only have unengine company and one ladder company. comparably, industry standards would call for about 40 firefighters within eight minutes of a high-rise fire. they could have never provided that response. on august 8th, the level of fuels, wind that they faced was insurmountable. it was really, as i mentioned,
