meantime attention is turning to dave halls, the director of the film. josh campbell reports. >> reporter: we are learning new details about the person who handed alec baldwin the prop gun on the day of the fatal shooting here in santa fe. assistant director dave halls who was on set that day had been involved in another incident two years ago involving the accidental discharge of a weapon on a set that resulted in an employee recoiling from that weapon unexpectedly taken off. the person was taken away by a medic but brought back. halls was discharged and ultimately dismissed. we reached out to halls for comment, but have not received a response. we are learning new details surrounding the fatal shooting itself here in santa fe. according to a search warrant affidavit from the sheriff's department, we are told alec baldwin is practicing a cross draw rehearsal where a person pulls a weapon across their body when the fatal shot rings out. the question remains what was inside the weapon. i spoke to the sheriff's department. they are awaiting a final determinatio

cnn is learning, josh, the assistant director or a.d. on the film dave halls that handed alec baldwin the prop gun was previously fired after a gun injured a crew member. what can you tell us about halls and this prior incident? >> this important reporting from our colleague back in 2019, this assistant director, the person who reportedly handed alec baldwin the weapon on that day here in santa fe was involved in another incident and that incident in 2019, there was an accidental discharge and a ploy has rekrocoiled. they were taken away from the set and brought back and halls was dismissed and ultimately fired. cnn reached out to halls for comment. we have not yet heard a response. one key questions, don, in this fateful incident is what was actually inseide that weapon? it some type of debris fired? was it a live round? i spoke to an official that is still awaiting the final coroner report that will hopefully give insight into what projectile took the life of helalyna hutchins, who are the people or person responsible? the armorer responsible on the set for

josh, the sheriff was going through with the d.a. this partial investigation. he said alec baldwin has been cooperating and has been interviewed on several occasions. he also said they have spoken to dave halls, the assistant director, and hanna gutierrez who was the armorer on this set. they, in addition to alec baldwin, were two people that handled the colt revolver right around the time of this shooting. give some context on that and other takeaways you got from watching that news conference. >> reporter: john, we learned a lot of information about this weapon. there was a question about what type of projectile was used, whether it was some type of blank round. the sheriff said right from the top that this was live ammunition that went through halyna hutchins and hit the shoulder of joel souza. we hear a lot of times we need to wait for the autopsy, wait for the coroner's report. the sheriff describing at the end of that press conference this bullet shooting and killing halyna hutchins. he himself described that as killing her, so obviously key pieces of information there. there is still a lot that investigators have to do as it relates to assigning reliability and culpability. that will
