let's go to josh letterman. he's with the president in nantucket, massachusetts. given that omicron is big time on the radar, what are the other pressing issues the president has to face in addition to that one? >> reporter: you're right. first and foremost, it is covid-19, because the white house firmly believes that getting that situation under control really unlocks the solution to all of the other issues they're facing right now. they know people are very concerned about this omicron variant. really the only time we saw president biden step away from his thanksgiving holiday over the last few days was to deal with this variant, to make that decision to enact that travel ban, as well as to briefly address reporters about why he decided to put those measures into place. they feel leak these other issues that we're dealing with in the economy, be it inflation and the supply chain issues, really all go back to covid-19 and people's fears about getting back out there into the economy. i think you're going to see a very concerted push from the biden administration o

. >> nbc news correspondent josh letterman is in glasgow with a preview. >> reporter: climate activistsister boris johnson have said this summit in glasgow is the world's last best chance to avert the catastrophic results of global warming and limiting it to 1.5 degrees celsius. the big focus, what kind of commitment are countries going to make to curb their emissions now. scientists tell us 2050 is too late, that action has to be taken within the next few years if the u.s. and the rest of the world are going to be able to prevent effects that will create more heat waves and disasters and hunger. the u.s. has made a commitment to curb its own emissions under the biden administration by 2050, but there's a lot of skepticism over whether president biden is going to be able to deliver, especially given the fact that not only has the united states fallen short once by pulling out of the agreement by president trump, but they were counted upon to say look what the u.s. has accomplished. the coalition still in limbo. we heard from president biden tonight who's been facing a lot of questions a

. >> nbc's josh letterman is in ed borrow, scotland. >> reporter: this needs to be a decisive decade innovation. yesterday he was talking about how this is the decisive decade to deal with climate change. today the focus on what are the technologies that can get us there. the president also putting a big emphasis on reducing methane, saying that is one of the most significant ways we can meet the global goals of limiting climate change to 1.5 degrees celsius and averting the most catastrophic effects of climate change. the president has been announcing with europe they now have 80-plus countries joining this pledge to reduce methane emissions within the decade. here at home, he is announcing the first federal regulations on existing oil and gas wells that are leaking methane, which is a very potent greenhouse gas, far more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. also shadow boxing a bit with china, which is not here at the summit. we saw president biden on the sidelines meeting with some of the over g7 countries to talk about build back better world, which is
