national correspondent gabe gutierrez joining us from ponce, puerto rico and josh letterman. gabe, they are still grappling with the damage left behind from fiona. what is the president going to see today? >> reporter: hi there, jose. good morning. i just heard something you said, talking about tens of thousands of linemen being pre-positioned to deal with the disaster there. as you know, jose, much more difficult to get those types of resources to this island in the middle of the caribbean. as you can see behind me right now, there is an urgent effort to try and get power to the remaining 8% of this island, its customers that still do not have power. we are in a neighborhood still without power more than two weeks after hurricane fiona. the hardest hit portions of this island, the southwestern parts of the island, 92% of customers here have had their electricity restored. but, jose, as you know, there is a lot of frustration here in puerto rico about the ongoing power situation here. many of the residents that we have spoken with do not trust the withdrew ma energy that took

we saw the video of him earlier behind josh letterman as he was on the white house balcony.ed liz truss and said she's been a good partner. this visit is coming -- there's some warning signs for democrats, per the "new york times," democrats fear red october has arrived as the polls move the gop's way, this election is looking a lot more normal than it might have seemed over the summer. normalcy is bad news. what are your concerns? is the gop momentum too much to overcome? >> well, let's level set. history says there should be a red wave and you go back six, seven months ago, as someone who watched 2010, a lot of those signs along the road looked like 2010. that has evaporated. that "new york times" poll aside, which is a bit of an outlier from every other poll out there that shows over the last six, seven months, that the republican advantage has gone, evaporated from a five or six-point to either a three-point democrat advantage or a complete toss-up. that momentum is an odd story given that republicans should be up solidly in the generic. if you look at the battlegrounds

with me now brian cheung, josh letterman, also joins us, host of public radio's "full disclosure" and "politico" chief chief correspondent. the biggest jobs gains were in leisure, hospitality, health care. >> i think the big takeway is that the labor market still appears to be chugging along. americans have options out there. with the unemployment rate a 3.5%, by the way, multidecade lows on that front, you're not seeing the traditional recessionary dynamics in this labor market where you might even see contractions in the number of jobs. we got 263,000 jobs created in the month of september. that is a slower pace than what we saw in august when 315,000 jobs were added. but it does show you that there are still options out there. the question is whether or not that story remains true through the end of this year. there are concerns from the federal reserve the nation's economic steward that perhaps the higher borrowing costs cut put some americans out of work. that's not happening yet as validated by this morning's numbers. >> the next rate decision is scheduled for november. official
