josh levs takes us through some of the bill's specifics. >> as soon as the plan was posted online thismmediately started breaking it down for you right no hehere. at cnn.com/healthcare you can read it, and see what were some of the key points from the plan and we have some points for you right here on this screen. let's look at this, cost about $856 billion over ten years, and would establish mandatory coverage by 2013. now there's no public plan as part of this but it does establish these non-profit cooperatives instead. there would be under this some new protections involving preexisting conditions, and that is one of the biggest changes a lot of people have been looking for, in and of itself that could be a change in the way health care operates in america where the law is changed, the way insurance companies have to handle preexisting conditions. too two-major points to look at, some of the most controversial issues involving health care reform we'll go to this first, which is about using federal funds for abortion. what it says here is that there would be these funds available for

let's check in now with josh levs. what are you finding? >> there is some good news in this big picture of how many dropouts there are in america. you may be surprised by this. let's go straight to this with the education department. if you look back at the last 30 years, we have graphics for you here. things have improved to some extent. you go back to 1980. dropout rate was at 14%. look at that. under 9%. we're seeing overall a reduction in the number of dropouts in america. they also -- this is important, broken down by race. you can see what they say about black students. at 19% under 8.4% last year. hispanic opportunities at 35% in 1980. latest figures, 21%. that's still horrendous. still too many dropouts in america. it's a problem. you can see big picture things improving to some extent. >> we have figures on best and worst cities? >> we do. this is interesting. let me show you this. this is from a group that puts out magazine "education week" broken it down by city. closing the graduation gap and use the term dropout crisis. they lo

cnn's josh levs takes a look at the real cost for all of us, not just those of us in california, joshbeen stunned by the numbers on cnn.com. a study that i found here is called the true cost of wildfires in the united states. let's just go to some video. i'm going to tell you about this. this is a government study, kyra, these are some of the facts that are from it. we'll start off with this. they talk about how much ultimately the long-term costs are. and let's bring them in right now. this first one is from the western forestry leadership coalition. they say you hear about suppression costs, right? maybe $50 million to crush a fire. to suppress that fire. but the long-term costs, they say, can be 30 times higher than that. then there's another group on this next screen that says it can be up to 50 times higher than that. that's the wildland fire lessons learned center, which is a private group that studies it. they say, look, you have the environmental impact, the health impact, business is lost. it can be up to 50 times what we hear. it can affect the whole country. take a look at
