melissa back to you. >> josh lipton inialo alto for us. thank you. and the question is does a robot do with the phone once they get to the front of the line. what is your trade on apple, dan? >> i don't think the company has too many problems. i think the stock could be dead money. but i think this desk we've shared for months now and selling calls and doing a lot against your holdings so if you own the stock and you are worried about the 10% drop you had august 24th, down to 95, remember people, the stock did open at 95 and traded lower. and you have to have the memory of it. so me, i think if you share the view that i do, if you are worried about a sharp selloff, think about doing something called collaring your stock. say you own 100 shares and it closed at $114. and you could sell at 1.50 and buy one of the december 1, '00 puts at $2.50. that structure cost you $1. between 15 and 129 you can make up the $14, that is 10% between now and december exploration and that is why you own the stock, because you want it to go up and they will pay a dividen

josh lipton reports on this vulnerability and whether it's possible others exist. >> reporter: when itomes to hack attacks, even the most valuable company in the world isn't immune. hackers have made their way into apple's app store. they targeted some of the most popular apps in china, including messaging app we chat as well as the ride-hailing app did didi xuxing. >> this is the first sort of broad attack they've experienced where lots of applications were all affected and those apps made their way onto the phone. it's never happened with ios. that sort is the first big crack in the giant armor that is the app store that has kept so many users safe for so long. >> reporter: here is how the hack worked. apple provides developers with a set of tools to create apps. one of which is called xcode. in china some developers used a counterfeit version of xcode because it downloaded more quickly. hackers were then able to modify this counterfet version and plant malicious code onto the apps. and once downloaded, these compromised apps could prompt fake alerts to fish for user data or exploit

for cnbc business news, i'm josh lipton in san francisco. >> shares in apple suppliers in japan had most ending the day lower. most suppliers underperforming today following the ooecevent. joining us now is the head of telecommunications investment research. always great to have you on the show. a lot of investors and apple fans were underwhelmed. >> expectations were set high and in the short-term investors may continue to be disappointed. you may get downgrades but on the two year view on a long-term basis this stock is still on our buy list. >> but why is that? because it's all about iphones. they make up more than 50 or 60% of their revenues and if you take a look at the recent upgrade years, 2014 for example we saw the 5s upgrade. that only saw a 10% up tick in sales where as the new launch, the 6 saw a 50% upgrade. why are you still pretty positive on the stock? >> it is all about iphones just now for the reasons that you mentioned but as i keep trying to say it's a best in class ecosystem and there's two trends that will send the stock higher. it's moving into entire new industrie

josh lipton now with that news alert on apple. josh? >> well, tyler, it's one of the most talked about rumors here in silicon valley. of course, apple's interest in pursuing this electric car now just getting some headlines from "the wall street journal." the journal is reporting that apple is accelerating efforts to build an electric car and setting a target ship date for 2019. the journal citing sources there. journal also saying leaders of the project code named titan have been given permission to triple the 600-person team. it's not clear whether apple has a manufacturing partner. 2019 target a pretty ambitious one. it's much talked about here in silicon valley. this is according to analyst a trillion dollar market. apple has never shied afwra entering established markets where it thinks it can have a big impact and big innovative products that the world wants. read through the headlines. also reached out to apple and i'll get back to you with more. >> i'll pick it up from there. thank you very much. we'll see what tesla's stock is

melissa, back to you. >> josh lipton, thanks for that. here is a question.you more excited that apple could be making a car or less? >> it is a syndrome. >> if apple said we are going to come out with a car, would you be more optimistic? >> it is difficult to be optimistic about a low margin business for a company where there is so much that could go wrong. the r&d involved in it. having said that. they can get a lot of mileage -- ha ha -- out of this. and i know that is not what they are doing. but to say they don't need that part of it -- when i look at apple as tesla, where you have a company that is so much expected, it is very tough to deliver. and therefore, no, as an apple sharmd sharmd -- shareholder, i don't want to see them do this. >> and i pose the same question to you as an apple shareholder? >> would rather have them buy tesla than create from scratch. i think it might cost so much more money. tesla is so much further along i imagine that where apple is. and like they did with beats. i know it was a tiny project, but to buy what i think is the

josh lipton from san francisco with this news on yahoo!. yahoo! at one-run point during the after hours session had been down by almost 5%. you guys might have gone to the beach on friday afternoon but here on "fast money" we noticed the filing, the chief accounting officer res yooinds in a filing after the close the friday before a three-day weekend and then we get this news dropped today on shares of yahoo!. tim. >> look, obviously concerning because a lot of people had imputed a tremendous amount of value in the yahoo! shares and some of the parts based upon a tax-free spinoff. i don't think that's really in the price. and i think in fact if you look at where baba is and so baba's now -- baba at 65 bucks, 38% tax implied value there, i think yahoo! shares, the sum of the parts are around 42, 43 bucks. the whole thing here is if you thought they were getting the tax-free spinoff that implied kind of your best case scenario in yahoo! and not one i think the street is largely doing. the step-down of the accountant, that is troubling obviously in t

cnbc's josh lipton's got the details out in san francisco. . >> reporter: well, melissa, you look at ambarella, that start in the past four weeks was already down about 20% heading into that print. down harder now. just running through the conference call, the company's ceo talking about that the company was pleased with those q2 results. strong sales he talked about for existing markets including wearables. that's gopro which analysts tell me is about a third of this country's revenue. he talked about flying cameras. by that he meant drones. he said that accounts for about 10% of this company's revenue, customers there include drone companies like dji. spang head, though, q3 revenue guide of 90 to 93 pl million. the street was looking for more like 92 million. ambarella, he said, drones are going to continue to expect to grow but he said wearable camera revenue will be down sequentially and year over year. he chalked that up to product timing, gopro announcing that new camera this summer usually would come in the fall. as for china no surpris

josh lipton has been covering this story for the past 30 minutes after the statement broke. he joins us from out west. hey, josh. >> carl, this morning apple, as you guyses weuys were mentionin us indication to customer response to 6 and 6s plus. they say customer response to iphone 6s and 6s plus have been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world. we are on pace to beat last year's 10 million unit first weekend record when the new iphones go on sale. last year apple said they received more than 4 million orders for the 6 and 6 plus in the first 24 hours. apple is saying what preorders indicate for the first weekend of sales, but clearly the tech giant sounding a bullish note and looking for a new record. it's the real question for investors, will these new iphones be faster, camera, better camera pressure sensitive display, shooting 4k video? will that grow units going ahead? bulls think they can. the price cuts to the older models they think will give iphones a lift in the emerging markets. >> speaking of which, china's 27% of sales, a

josh lipton in new york with all the apple numbers. josh? >> well, brian, i'm at the iab mix conference in new york but the big news, you're right, in tech coming from apple today with the tech giant saying it sold more than 13 million of the new iphone 6s and 6s plus models over the weekend. and that was a record. now, a big reason for that, brian, remember, this year china was included in the launch. last year it was not. analysts estimate apple sold some 2 million of those new iphones in china over the weekend and that helped boost those numbers. then the next date to circle on your calendar will be october 9th when apple says the new iphones will be available in 40 more countries, including italy, mexico, and russia. take a look at apple stock today. down in today's trade. fbr's dan ives says there are still skeptics who wonder if apple can grow iphone units in the quarters ahead. skeptics, of course, point to the tough comps given those impressive numbers we saw from apple last year. bulls though will point to that last earnings call wh
