channel 13's josh nguyen joins us now live from ames where temperatures could turn that a busy morning for des moines police as they dealt with two overnight chases. the first started around 1-30 on the city's east side. and led officers on a chase at 100 miles per hour on the interstate at one point. the driver eventually crashed at east 21st and university. police arrested the person soon after. just minutes later... officers moines' west side. this one started on 24th... the driver eventually got out of their car and started running. officers caught up to suspect just a short while later in a garage in the 2400 block of prospect. that person is now in custody. we now know the three metro police officers involved in a deadly weekend shooting. urbandale police say they've placed jeff casey, anthony brooks, and justice weaver on paid administrative leave... which is standard procedure. their years of service range from 1 to 20 years of service. investigators say the man who died from his injuries sustained in the shooting is 29-year-old ali yahia, of des moines. the incident happened e

josh nguyen joins us now live to tell us how construction workers aren't the only ones who can help make our ride to work smoother. the city of des moines is chipping in some big bucks to guarantee a new downtown hotel. last night the city council approved a 10 million dollar loan to help build the iowa events center hotel.... that's up from 5 million. before, board members were trying to use that for a foreign investment program that would fund the hotel... but they abandoned that due to timing issues. a new financing plan had the city pitching in 10 million... and they have agreed. polk county has already approved 30 million dollars in funding. the hotel is set to open in early 2018. johnston students are being asked to pay up this morning for a ride to school... last night school board members approved a new paid ridership program. it will charge any student who lives within one mile of their school to pay for the bus trip. that's expected to expand to withing two miles once the new high the charge will be around $460 dollars per year... board members say the change will help with the

let's check in with channel 13's josh nguyen who's live in des candidates will now shift their focus to other parts of the country. the nevada democratic caucus will take place february 20... the same day as the republican primary in south carolina. des moines police are busy investigating two deadly fires this morning. the latest happened just before seven last night in the 27- hundred block of 61st street. while firefighters worked to put out the flames, they discovered a body of a man inside. police have yet to release the victim's name.. and are still investigating what des moines police say they struggled to save a man involved in a different deadly fire earlier in the morning. officers responded to a disturbance call at this home just after midnight yesterday. as they approached the home... they could see flames inside... and attempted to get 48-year old neil johnston out. instead they say he fought back... even pulling a gun on his rescuers. johnston died in the fire. investigators say he started the fire.. but are still trying to determine why. the bondurant-farrar school dis

channel 13's josh nguyen joins us now live with a trooper who has seen it all. des moines police were involved in two overnight chases on wet metro streets... the first started around 1:30 on a vehicle led officers on a chase that reached speeds as high as 60 on city streets and 100 mph on the interstate. the driver -- michael jones -- eventually crashed at e 21st and university. jones now faces drug related charges and eluding. just minutes later... a chase lit up des moines' west side. this one started on 24th... the driver eventually got out of their car and started running. officers caught up to 18-year-old kairon williams just a short while later in a garage in the 2400 block of prospect. he's now also char eluding in addition to burglary and interference. an iowa state bus driver says he shouldn't be blamed for a fatal hit and run. ben clague was driving the bus that police say hit and killed i-s-u freshman emmalee jacobs. yesterday he plead not guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. police say bus surveillance after the
