good to see you, again. >> thanks, joshua.at to see you. >> let's start with these booster shots. can you just explain for us, generally, how they would work and why they're needed? >> well, joshua, what appears to be happening is that if you're older than 65 or immunocompromised, that there is some concern from data out of israel and other parts of the world that perhaps you might have decreased protection against ending up in the hospital. and so, that's why for certain -- certainly, certain segments of society. that third shot, if you got two shots of pfizer or moderna seems necessary to keep you as protected as possible from ending up in the hospital if you were exposed to the delta variant. the big question here and the reason why the w.h.o. and many of us in public health are scratching our heads is for someone like myself, for example, joshua. icu doc. nine months ago, i got fully vaccinated. why do i need a booster shot in there is no evidence that folks like myself, less than 65, otherwise healthy, need a booster shot

>> i think so, joshua. know, i wasn't here when katrina struck 16 years ago, but from what i can see, the infrastructure is far better today. certainly, the flood prevention infrastructure that the city and the region has, but also the infrastructure of the hospitals, and i think the state of readiness of the hospitals is considerably better today. i saw that in the planning phase leading up to this hurricane. so i have lived on the gulf coast and worked in houston and new orleans for virtually my entire career, and i was quite impressed with the planning that the hospitals did. and i think that it's been reflected in how things have turned out today. >> oh, last few seconds, dr. klein. power has been steady where you are? you haven't had any outages? >> so, we really have lost city power entirely. we're working on backup generators right now. i'm in kind of a makeshift area here. the patient care areas are secure regarding power. the nonessential areas of the hospital are dark. >> got you. dr. mark klein a

joshua: not particularly. although it is possible. issue will be if there is variant that can really make people who are vaccinated sick. i have not heard at this point about that emerging. it is going to be a big deal if that happens, particularly if it starts to spread. taylor: there has been some concern that we are talking about boosters when other countries cannot even get their hands on one stock. how do you respond? joshua: it is hard to keep both things in our mind. we are sharing an enormous amount of vaccine. it is important to scale affecting production. when good thing was the news that pfizer is starting in north america. the delivery parts of the vaccination effort are difficult. it is going to be important for us to do both to make vaccine available here, because we have now one of the worst outbreaks, but at the same time, continue to distribute vaccines. taylor: we started the conversation talking about schools. this pandemic has reminded us of being doctors and in public health, it is not only physical health. it is

>> yeah, joshua. ali is exactly right.'re dealing with is the backside of this storm system. but he's also dealing with the front east side quadrant. now, you can see it starting to make its way here in laplace parish. that's where the strongest winds will be for this system. yes, it's been downgraded, the impact, so they're still very much the same. i want to zoom into our radar. you can see the bulk of this moisture, what we call feeder bands starting to make its way across new orleans. so that's what ali is starting to see. the problem that i have with this, this is the bands making their way across lake pontchartrain. so we could see some torrential rain that they don't need. so the storm surge is definitely going to be up. and we'll watch some high tide that will make its way in later on tomorrow morning. so you can see the front end, now we're dealing with a cat 2 hurricane. it is starting to lose its force a little bit. what happens here is the pressure starts to go up and then the wind speeds, they start to go down

in essence, joshua, this will promote. for many years and decades, our communities have seen these infrastructure jobs and project s and across america, neighborhoods that are really hurting. what about the timing for these bills? we just learned that there are a number of democrats circulating a draft later to bring up the bipartisan bill immediately after it passes the senate. that's something we can report that's new tonight. what do you think is the right way to go about this, process wise? >> the right way to go about it is exactly house speaker pelosi is proposing. the human infrastructure part of this initiative is so important. you have training, job training, day care services, you have immigration reform, that is so critical, for many communities. we must do that first. and now that we have a bipartisan agreement on transportation infrastructure, i think it's easier to put it in that way. i know that there will be some members of congress that will choose to maybe want to do it differently, but i think this is a

but i don't know, joshua.he number may be very high if he ends up getting convicted. >> i was wondering about when number of years he can face if convicted. i wonder why that's prosecutors are attempting to go after r. kelly with something as broad as racketeering as opposed to just say putting him away on one count of, you know, having sex with a minor. it sounds like they're trying to make the case that there is a much larger literally criminal conspiracy going on that merits him being in prison for longer as opposed to bringing up one young woman who can prove they had an illicit relationship. >> well, to some extent they tried that before. so when r. kelly was acquitted in 2008 it was for basically one victim. she refused to testify and he was acquitted. now there's not only going to be again like the parade of victims in this case. so there's some strength in numbers in terms of that prosecution but also the presentation of a lot of video evidence, graphic video evidence. i would be stunned if r. kelly wa

joshua, i grew up in bangladesh in the 1980s. i was one of the last babies in the world to be vaccinated against smallpox and bangladesh is one of the last countries. i think about how we eradicated major pandemics like smallpox, like polio. i don't think it should be a choice. and i don't think we can afford for people to choose not to get vaccinated. >> eric, what about the way some companies are dealing with this, including some companies in the media industry. we mentioned the walt disney company. we learned this week cnn fired three staffers who came into their offices unvaccinated. the president of cnn sent a memo saying we set a rule, it's no to school -- no tolerance. they're going to say all employees have to be vaccinated to enter events and venues and offices. eric, how do you see this? >> yeah. unfortunately, given the way that some media outlets and some politicians have politicized this issue, i think it will eventually fall to private industry and businesses to require their employees and staffers to be vaccinated

joshua: never know -- you never know.ioral economic, what would make people change their mind? it is obviously a standard -- combination of incentives and standards. here in maryland all the hospitals are requiring vaccinations for people who can get it. it is a combination of things that i think will move the needle. i do think the delta variant, the surgeon hospitalizations, the surge -- the surge in hospitalizations is having an impact here. lisa: let's talk about the science of the delta variant, what the vaccinated individuals can count on in terms of protection. we got a study out of israel saying half of all diagnosed cases of covid are in the vaccinated. how protected are you from transmitting the virus if you are inoculated? joshua: the best way to think about the vaccine is that it is an umbrella. it is like an umbrella -- and it is not raining that hard and you are not outside for too long, you will stay dry. if you are outside for a long time, it is a really bad rainstorm, you could still get wet. when people

joshua sharfstein joins from johns hopkins. doing when they look at the new conundrum of getting schools launched in the classroom? dr. sharfstein: i think they are looking at the data, which shows if you have multiple mitigation measures in place, you are in the best possible position to prevent illnesses for teachers, other adults in school, and students. those measures are going to include masks for teachers and students, vaccines for all the adults and older kids who can take them, and better ventilation. if other things. if you do those things, you are really minimizing the chance of a problem, probably to the point where it is quite low. we will obviously have to see how this plays out. it is very disturbing to me is how some school boards are acting like the virus is really not that much of a threat, and they could be sorely mistaken. lisa: what do you think is a remedy, given the fact that it seems to be a state-by-state endeavor with florida actually banning mask mandates in schools, other saying you need to wear masks
