. >>> let's bring in joshua johnson. he covers politics and anchor at msnbc. we are happy you are here in person. let's talk about the intelligence reports that show russia is at it again trying to interfere ahead of the 2020 election. to help donald trump or bernie sanders or both right now. the president blaming democrats. calling it a hoax and disinformation. what are we supposed to make of the new developments? >> let me take off my journalist hat and put on my red blooded american hat. you have to convince the other army they can't beat you. all of this russian misinformation is to get us to think of something other than what is in the best interest of the country. if you allow the russians to not vote or vote out of fear, that is on you. we can win this by saying i'm not going to allow myself to fall into the pit that nothing is true and everything is a hoax. let that go. that is exactly what vladimir putin wants. >> and all of this happening at the drop of the nevada caucuses set to be held today. we know that they held early voting for the first time.

. >> speaking of the voters who were, after all, in the key audience tonight, joshua johnson is backhat means you're an npr listener. but he's ours now, and importantly tonight, he set out some -- i guess bait -- to get comments from members of the audience about what they saw tonight. >> bait sounds sneaky. >> i know. well, yeah, that's true. we use it for lobster, and that's not fair. >> exactly. i just asked people if they would share their thoughts about the debate? electability, i saw with regards to pete buttigieg, joe biden, amy klobuchar and elizabeth warren. not a lot on the bernie sanders, but the sanders supporters were numerous. here are three of the comments that stood out to me. these are not necessarily representative examples. three that stood out. patty in nevada east of reno, patty wrote i will caucus for pete. i applaud pete's intelligence and empathy and these qualities are the foundation which reflect his views. i especially like the fact that his health care plan allows for keeping private insurance while also covering those in need. several commenters had somet

joshua johnson, formerly of npr, is now ours, and the newest minted msnbc on-air host. >> welcome. >>come to you both. jash wh joshua, you get to go first. sum up what you've seen tonight. drill down on whatever you wish. >> i hate to disappoint you, but i can't sum up too much. i've been trying hard not to extrapolate too much on this. we've seen two states that are damn near the same. iowa is white. new hampshire is whiter with a little less seasoning. and we are about to go into two states that are demographically very different. nevada is 29% hispanic. that's not seasoned, that's sason. a very different state. south carolina is 26% black. it's almost like we have one data point and two different versions. i'm waiting for the other two data points to have a better idea of where the electorate is going to go, especially after amy klobuchar's speech. you already said this, but she was the only person i think who spoke past her supporters to the nation to try to get more people on her side. she didn't say a word about her opponents. and i think she is beginning to elicit a kind of pat

all right, we are here at the table with our friends joshua johnson also joins us, former host of npr'sie sanders dominance in this early vote, if it holds up, will be the story of nevada. just to make sure that our coverage of these primaries isn't like etch a sketch, one of the enduring story lines is if biden is even going to be a contender in that bernie sanders alternative lane. he has to have a strong showing in nevada and south carolina. it seems based on what we've seen so far that that's still a possibility. >> it is possible. i was looking at the numbers with black voters saying they're very much in support of bernie sanders. about 10% of the electorate in nevada right now is african-american. nevada's population is 10% black. that seems to be kind of indexiinde indexing neatly. latino voters seem to be under represented. 17% of the electorate in nevada is latino, but nevada is 29% hispanic. so i'll be interested to see why some of those voters did or did not show up. with regards to joe biden versus bernie sanders, we've talked about how bernie sanders kind of has a lock with
