democrat joyce craig became the first woman mayor of manchester, new hampshire. that's new hampshire's largest city. and maria trace, as you know, that's the tip of the iceberg. >> absolutely. we also have the first time a sudanese refugee elected to a local city council. the list goes on. but i thought what was most telling yesterday of the results was that one we finally have a diversified demographic of america, really representing the map of what america is -- looks like. and people came out bold and they came out and voted. others putt themselves out there but i also think that it's interesting and where the republicans should really, you know, be concerned is that we saw a surge of women from the suburbs come in under the fold of the democratic party. that's been rare. the soccer mom has usually historically be independent and republican. this is not just a wave. that is tsunami heading their way an they have to change course. >> neera, what can the republicans do in the face of this? this seems like a very personal, very energetic rejection of donald trump

in new hampshire, joyce craig will become the first woman mayor of manchester beating out ted gatsas. so it was a good night all around for republicans. >> no, it wasn't. >> for democrats. >> there you go. >> whatever. i had a 50% chance of being right. right? either republicans or democrat hs a really good night last night. >> joining us now is garrett haake also along with cnbc editor at large john harwood. garrett, you say moderate republicans are panicking. what's the reaction on the hill today? >> reporter: well, that's not the reaction i'm hearing from senate republicans who've been trying very hard to put a fence around these races last night and say, look. new jersey's a blue state. they shouldn't be surprised about that. virginia is trending increasingly blue. so they're essentially trying to down play the results we've seen. but when you start talking to folks about the results in these down ballot races. virginia house of delegates. folks winning in places where democrats just don't win in the old dominion. they acknowledged there is this burst of energy on the democratic s

let me tell you a quick story, those in manchester a couple weeks ago -- i love joyce craig.e is absolutely phenomenal. there was an old basketball coach named john wooden. i know the cell pictures are on a roll. you had to get kyra irving here, you had to steal a cleveland cavalier to make it happen but that is okay. if you want to send tom brady to the browns we would take him, be happy to take him. the browns may even make tom brady lose. i want to tell you that. like a disease in the cleveland browns organization. i just threw myself off. there was this great basketball coach named john wooden. john wooden back in the day arguably one of the best ncaa basketball coaches of all time. he was coaching a young kid named cinder, a tall kid from new york city who could think a basketball and so they nominated him. just dunk the basketball, kept winning and dunking and it was so good that the ncaa had to come in and say no one is allowed to dunk anymore. so he was out of his mind which he had no clue what he was going to do and john wooden came up, what am i going to do, going t
