now the case has laid out the case for juan garcia zarate. claiming that that july 2015 shooting was accidental and the bullet which killed steinle ricochetted off of the pier at pier 14 before striking her back. of course the prosecution has a different take on this, laying out the case that czar zarate intentionally carried out that shooting, pointing the gun at steinle and deliberately pulling the trigger. of course we've learned throughout this that gun thaad reason stolen just days earlier. the defense says garcia zarate found stashed under a seat at the pier. they initially charged him with second-degree murder, but the judge agreed to a request to request first-degree murder as well. our own nbc bay area sam brock is in the white house. he'll have the latest on these closing arguments at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. you can follow us for all the latest updates online on nbcbayarea.com. we're live in san francisco. pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> you're right, pete. we'll stay on top of this story and bring you the updates as they arrive
