. >> cenk: that's from "witness juarez"." the photographer involved in that join us now.against the war on drugs is because of what is happening down in mexico. the incredible death an destruction that has reaped on mexico is something that most americans are not familiar with. can you telephone us the level of violence we have in mexico? >> yes, well the level of violence is just tremendous over the last several years. it's not just from executions in the street. it's terror tactics. you'll come across headless bodies over bridges people dissolved in acid. it's extreme. >> cenk: you have a perspective that is many americans don't have because you've seen it. does that make all the difference? if people in america saw what you have seen would they have a different view, for example the war on drugs? >> certainly. the level of violence alone is pretty stagger. but also just basically how the mexicans keep on with their daily lives is pretty impressive. but until you see the actual bodies in the streets, i think they just remain as statistics. so it is difficult, i think to

so tell us about your experience in juarez that you feel many people wouldn't necessarily know about.his is a place you have dared to go and photograph. >> yeah. thank you for having me. i think the main thing to take away from juarez is the amount of violence and killing was so extreme that everybody in the city and the surrounding areas is affected by it. you just everywhere you go, you meet someone that's been affected directly by the violence. and state corruption. and the drug industry. it's just tremendous. >> and tremendous, too, is the risk that you take and other photographers take in order to get some of these images. you do this at what cost? you have to establish relationships for some of these subjects. right? >> yeah, certainly you have to establish relationships but on the other hand you have to be careful of getting too close, as well. >> and how do you do that? >> time on the ground. you just have to meet people and move slowly and talk to people. that's the most -- that's the first step in our profession. you have to put yourself out there and engage with people and

let me show you again a simple chart of what we have been able to do in cuidad juarez. it became at some point a couple years ago one of the most violent cities in the world. >> rose: right. >> the drug gangs were fighting each other, they were killing each other and it was very very hard and it was a very very hard environment. we had been able to bring the homicide rate 76% with a comprehensive strategy and we are doing things like this in other areas of the country where the violence is particularly significant. overall, the crime rate in mexico decreased by about 4% overall in the first semester of this year relative to the first semester of last year. we need to do much more but i think we have found a path and we're working very hard on it. >> rose: what's the most difficult? what is the biggest impediment? >> well, one needs to understand that there are some factors that are determining what's happening in mexico that are completely exogenous to our country that have almost nothing to do with our country. that has to do with the demand for drugs in the united sta
