i like this image on the left that shows fortress monroe in the civil war, where john tyler and juliaeymooned in the summer of 1844. tyler became the chair of an ill-fated peace conference in washington in february of 1861. it was at this time while he was in washington for the peace conference that tyler met president-elect abraham lincoln. he came away from lincoln very unimpressed. lincoln was quite unimpressed with tyler. tyler won election to the provisional confederate congress, and eventually sought election to the permanent congress. he won. this is the best example of how politics retained its hold on him, how he was addicted to politics. now he tide before he could take his seat in the congress. he died on january 18th, 1862, but he should have stayed out of it. i'm critical of him for this decision to get back into politics. critical because it really tarnished his historical reputation beyond repair. he was starting to enjoy a little bit more of a statesman like sentiment that the american people had for him, a lot of the bad feelings that had developed over him being bani
