the one he skipped is from julia ansley. mr. downing, is there a problem with the jury in this case? paul manafort's defense lawyer paused looked right at julia ansley and kept looking at her and said nothing in response. so whether there's something going on with the jury, whether that's the defense's contention that there's something wrong with the jury, we don't yet know. we will apparently find out sooner rather than later. the judge said in open court all of those motions and all of those transcripts of these closed hearings will be unsealed when the trial ends. so we will eventually find out. as i mentioned though, manafort's defense lawyer basically tried to explain to reporters it today why no witnesses were called to stand up for paul manafort on the defense side of the case. in court today, that included a certain lengthy at least a description of why paul manafort wasn't standing up to testify as a witness in his own defense. here's how that went in court today. the judge, now we turn to the fact that the government h

i want to bring in nbc's national security reporter julia ansley, okeydoke, has this cross-examinationso much damage to gates' credibility? >> reporter: i think it puts a dents in his credibility. it remains to be seen if that will put a dents in the prosecution case, though. it seems for a large part of yesterday they were presenting a man shoo would not presenting a life to the jury. this is a man who was able to have a flat in london for his terrorist trysts. and it's unclear, why he kind of still seems squirrelly. and if he was there to fell the truth, as he just put out from that transcript, why wasn't he being more direct? why wasn't he being more remorseful? it may be that the jury is going to have a hard time believing but the prosecution, when they first started questioning him they were able to bring out a number of documents to corroborate great point by point, everything he was saying, the money he was moving illegally through the company that he ran with paul manafort. the lies that were told, they were able to corroborate all of that. we'll see what the defense will do to
