julia manchester. julia, good to see you this morning. certainly it is, you know, a pretty standard practice for presidents coming in to reward supporters with ambassadorships. sometimes that's a big donor, sometimes that's a political ally. sometimes that's a football star. you know, we also know that trump raised headlines when he named jared kushner's father important as overseas host. give us your sense here about your read on the nature of these picks and whether you think any of them will have trouble getting through. >> hey, good morning, jonathan. look, i think herschel walker is emblematic of donald trump's love for the idea of a celebrity and obviously someone who's loyal to him, and that is what herschel walker has done during his very short political career. mayes been loyal to the president and he's a celebrity. like we saw on truth social when president trump announced this, he's somebody obviously big in the sports world. trump seemingly likes that. so it's hard to see a link between this and diplomatic relations even with a country like the bahamas, but it doesn't necessarily surprise me. i think it has some people scratching their heads, but i don't think it's surprising. sort of reminds me in a way on a smaller scale of when trump chose pete hegseth to be his defense secretary pick, obviously two very different picks. herschel walker doesn't have the same baggage not under scrutiny. but at the same time i think it goes to show trump likes the idea of a celebrity, someone who's good on camera or he thinks is good on camera, and i think that's reflected here. >> yeah, no question. and you mentioned hegseth, so many of his picks for his administration were either fox news anchors, contributors, or made frequent appearances on that network. let's turn to some of the confirmation battles ahead. pete hegseth continues to per our reporting be at least a few votes short of support there, but he's still pushing. trump is backing him. we've had tulsi gabbard, robert k. kennedy jr., kash patel all make the rounds on the hill in repeat days and will continue to do so. what's the latest you've heard in terms of where nose nominations stand, and how much political capital is trump willing to spend on their behalf? >> look, i think with pete hegseth the tide has turned in his favor. he still has work to do and he would as i imagine be doing that work over the holidays and in the coming weeks, but i thought the tide really turned when he saw iowa senator joni ernst not necessarily come out and say she would vote for him but softened her stance. we know they had two meetings together, and during that second meeting it seemed they had kind words for each other. they said it was a productive meeting, and pete hegseth has also changed his rhetoric on some issues. we know joni ernst herself is a veteran, and we know pete hegseth has made comments about disagreeing with women in combat. maybe some movement there, but also as you see pete hegseth and the tide turning from him, you have more scrutiny coming on tulsi gabbard and rfk jr. for tulsi gabbard, i mean given the news happening in syria and the situation in the middle east, her nomination is certainly under scrutiny. she, of course, met with former now ousted syrian dictator bashar al assad in 2017 during a secret meeting. that got condemnation from republicans and democrats, so expect her to, you know, face some tough questions on that. and for rfk jr., look, i think republicans have for the most part united around him, but there still are some questions, whether it has to do with vaccines, you know, his stance on abortion, he is a bit more liberal than the trump administration on that issue, and then of course even on the issue of agriculture and gmos, you look at a senator like chuck grassly from iowa who has said he has some questions to kennedy about how some of his stances on getting rid of gmos and food how that would impact the agriculture industry. even if some of these picks seem relatively safe for now, and some of them are, some of them aren't, expect them to face tough questions in the weeks to come am. >> national politics reporter for the hill, juliat. >>> next up here we'll go live to cnbc for an early look at what's driving wall street this morning after the dow has now reported its longest losing streak since 1978. plus, we'll dig into what we can expect to hear from the federal reserve as it's set to make a decision on interest rates later today. beautiful shot there of the rockefeller center christmas tree all lit up. julia manchester. julia. good morning. good morning. casey, to see you. so this is of course, something that biden repeatedly said that he would not do but also, at the end of the day, the reason he was asked about it so many times is because everybody did wonder if he could possibly, as a father leave the office without doing this. what have you seen as this has unfolded over the last 12 hours? >> look, it's no surprise that republicans are certainly criticizing president biden over this, saying that he is politicizing the judicial system. >> democrats, of course, hitting back, talking about the politicization of the judicial system. on the right side of the aisle. but at the same time, i thought it was interesting seeing a few democrats like colorado governor jared polis, arizona congressman greg stanton coming out and saying, look they understand where the president is coming from as a father, but they're afraid of the precedent this sends this sets, you know, it's interesting looking at the past, you know, 24, 48 hours in terms of, you know, news with the justice system you have of course, kash patel being nominated by president-elect trump to lead the fbi someone who is very much a yes man to the president elect and then a day later, you have joe biden on the other side pardoning hunter i think a lot of critics of both sides would say that they're concerned that this we're seeing more of a growing politicization of this justice department from both sides of the aisle. so i think that's a concern going forward. >> so you mentioned jared polis again, the democratic governor of colorado. let's let's look in detail at what he said. he said, quote while as a father, i certainly understand president joe biden's natural desire to help his son i am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country. this is a bad precedent that could be abused by later presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation. when you become president, your role is to be the father of the nation, hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging no one is above the law, not a president and not a president's son so he is saying, look, this is bad precedent. now, of course, the biden pushback is that these prosecutions wouldn't have gone forward this way if hunter biden wasn't the president's son. >> exactly. they are using that excuse of a double standard. and look, this isn't surprising that biden is doing this. of course, i think maybe it's shocking to some because we saw the president repeatedly particularly in the lead up to the presidential campaign, saying he wouldn't pardon him. but at the same time, you see hunter biden so much with president biden despite the controversy, he really brought to the headlines, he would accompany him on foreign trips. he was often at the white house. so i think to a lot of us watching this was definitely a long time coming. but look, there is that very legitimate question about precedent, what it means for the trump administration and future administrations going forward in terms of how these pardons are carried out. >> yeah. one of the things here and this dynamic, of course, is that the president is stepping off the stage, right. many of the quotes we've we've showed and and seen from him talking about this were from before he left the top of the democratic ticket right. there are democrats who are still going to be in the arena trying to push back against donald trump and former congressman joe walsh, who has become a trump critic, was on over the weekend talking about what this pardon means kind of in that context. let's watch that. >> so the next time any of us complain about anything trump does this. >> this pardon is just deflating nobody is above the law. >> we've been screaming well joe biden just made clear his son hunter is above the law. >> donald trump lies every time he opens his mouth we've been screaming, joe biden repeatedly lied about this the politicization of the justice system donald trump and his people have been screaming. well, that's exactly what biden said here so he's basically saying that they have handed the trump team an enormous cudgel with this. >> right, and expect democrats whether they're democratic governors democratic attorney generals democratic lawmakers here in washington they will be asked about this, and they will be put on the spot. and it's going to be interesting going forward. once we officially get into the trump administration, we know that that justice department under, you know, assuming pam bondi becomes attorney general that's going to be under a lot of scrutiny from democrats. i think it's going to be easy for republicans to certainly point to this. and say, look what biden did here. >> all right, julian, manchester for us this morning, juliaful to have you. thank you. all right. coming up here on cnn this morning, a quote productive meeting donald trump and canada's prime minister met face to face after trump's tariff threat. plus five feet of snow and more on the way. we'll take you there and >> it was. >> and you know, and it was just the i do fault, not the biden campaign, but the biden white house for a complete failure of communication of what they were doing. you know, we got out there and there really was no, no knowledge at all about what the what biden administration had done. and interestingly enough so people would say, well, you know biden, my grocery prices have gone up and i would say, well, actually, joe biden is not on the ballot. and they would go oh, oh, all right, kamala harris or whether she was the vice president or none of that was at a level of communication for for these folks. >> there was a huge movement of hispanic voters nationally from democrat to republican, in this election particularly among men just out of curiosity, as an old campaign operative, when you went to the doors, were you having most of your conversations with men or women who was answering the door? and what were most of your substantive conversations? who was it with? >> well, first of all, i want to correct that in terms of pennsylvania, what happened in pennsylvania with the latino vote nationally. i know, i know what happened broadly, but one of the things that i learned from this is that the lived experience of a puerto rican american citizen voter in allentown, pennsylvania, has very little in common with the lived experience of a mexican american voter who lives in hidalgo, texas, right by the border, right? when people were coming across the border, when, when when there was kind of chaos at the border from the lived experience of a cuban american who lives in south florida, these experiences, there's nothing there's very little in common. and the lived experience of a latino in las vegas nevada, as part of the also like they put all latinos together, but they're very diverse it's very diverse. it's very diverse. and and the and so so that would be the first point that i would make. the second point is that it varied a lot. but the people who came to the doors the stress of of of working life in for working class people and even middle class people, it's really extraordinary what's happened in this country. the the economic the very tough four years. >> we're going to be talking about this for quite some time. i mean, work contract work. >> what an important conversation. >> juliaston no childcare. >> yeah. thank you very much for bringing it to us. everyone else, stay with me. coming up next, the panel will give us their nightcaps including why trump is warning of hell to pay hello, brad dan singh to the world of boys and girls now, i didn't sign on for this. >> it's christmas. >> bah humbug. >> christmas is the time to be with the people you love joy to the world joe tague wow home to you and me a heart attack. >> do they have life insurance? julia solve debbie welcome at julia while the gym and diplomats are trying to achieve. so this was the 1st time that german diplomats were back in damascus since 2012 since of the civil war in the country kicked off. and they were, they're speaking to, as you said, representatives of, of the transitional government to discuss how this transition can unfold a peacefully for syria. they said that the focus of the talks was on ensuring that the rights of minorities and the women especially are guaranteed in this transition in syria. they said the meeting also included talks with representatives of civil society and religious minorities. and they said they also inspected the building of the german embassy, which has been sitting empty in damascus since 2012. but we've also also heard from the german 4 ministry that it says it is aware of the origins ups that its origins are grounded in. okay, to all kind of ideology and they say they're keeping a close eye on. uh wow. the group is going to act and, and, and, and move forward in this transition. right, on the removal of side has spot debates here in germany about returning syrians to the home country, one of our gym and its political policy, se, as well. we have heard from the day after the fall of a side coming, especially from a parties on the far right. and the conservatives calls for syrians to return to syria. now that the re g regime has fallen, we've heard from ali side on the leader of the far right as the she said that the german, these borders are now closed. and she called for all the people who were celebrating of the fall of us out on the streets of germany to return to syria. we've also heard from the conservative, see to you from one of its main personalities in a former health industry and spawn. he said that germany should organize a charter flights for syrians who want to return to syria and offer them an incentive of a 1000 euros to do so. now a different position coming from the german chancellor, all of shaun's. he said in a speech directed also to syrians in germany that a new syrians who wants to be in germany are obviously welcome in the country. and he said that some statements coming from politicians have the stabilize many a fellow syrian citizens here in the country. but to find out what a syrians in germany actually think about this whole debate, i met a syrian doctor who's been here in germany since 2015. let's have a listen to, to what he has to tell me the. this is a far cry from is words treating war injuries in the syrian civil war. but in 2015, a lot of the left of the mask is hospital where he'd worked to come to germany. now a doctor on an emergency war, just east of berlin. the 38 year old treats very different injuries. still the german hospital now feels like home. it feels like a big family. that's what i need it actually. and we have like we, we experience a lot of things together like emergencies. some they are about and worse than others. some of these are great, so that's what i liked this identity ross, i need also, and i get it here in addition to a great team. so i couldn't ask for more doctors, one of the around 6000 syrian doctors in germany who work in hospitals or doctors offices, syrians make up the largest group before and doctors in the country. and now the sudden fall of the a side regime has raised the question, what would happen to germany's health care system if these doctors begin returning to syria? now i'm in a conk annoies on functions that we have the same problem in almost all the hospitals where vacancies are difficult to fill because of demographic trends. we have an aging population, including among doctors who are leaving the profession, and relatively few younger ones are coming in, which is why we are dependent on doctors from e, you know, new countries. i'm movies. oh, that's hospitals. supervisor says she has become an essential member of her team. she says is experienced back in war torn syria sets them apart. but if he returned, she would lose a valuable colleague and a friend. i don't think our house system could so wife is all those colleagues from other countries would go back home or even now with all this or in doctors here in our hospitals. we were looking for colleagues as das was overjoyed when you heard about the end of besides regime. but he says it's too early to tell whether he will go back. i can tell you i or i can assure you others that mean like many other of sir young people in germany, not only doctors, but syrians in general, so long to go back to a home which is stable where we can live like in p as in victor, so if our home could provide that in the next few years, i think a lot of people would consider going back today as off as german citizenship and says it's place right now is in germany doing the job he loves. but he is full of optimism for serious future and says he can't rule out going back one day. so julia saw that a give him the shortages that you mentioned, all efforts being made to try and persuade the savings to stay as well. we haven't seen any specific efforts now coming out of the government, specifically directive towards the syrians given the situation now after the fall of us side in syria. but to the government has been trying now for the last couple years, at least to implement measures that can make the country more attractive to 4 and workers. in general, germany has a big gap to fill in the labor market and authority say the only way to actually be able to fill that gap is by attracting for and workers. and many different fields of medicine and health care is one of the most affected, not only doctors, but also nurses in other care personnel. and germany does hope to see that these measures will actually bring a more workforce to the country. but something i've also discussed with a mr. other off and also with his supervisor is that a big issue is also the welcoming cultu

julia ainsley. julia, good morning. i want to talk exactly about the plans the trump administration has but a little more on this policy to begin with. probably makes sense to a lot of people not to go into a hospital o r a funeral, for example. to grab somebody and deport them. why was it put in place to begin with? >> yeah. when this was put in place in 2011 by obama's then i.c.e. director it seemed like common sense. they wanted to allow migrants to be able to get services that they needed to be able to prosper and live in a community peacefully. undocumented children are still allowed to go to school even if their parents are in this country undocumented. the idea that parents could be arrested picking up their children from school or that they would be discouraged from going into that setting, from getting emergency health care, from attending a wedding or a funeral, these all seemed like common sense places to protect. and in fact, the first trump administration stood by this. they did not change these rules when they came into office. the biden administration went further to define exactly what these places were. they also said it includes rallies. so if you think about it, when they rescind this policy, willie, if there are protests against mass deportations, an undocumented immigrants show up there, i.c.e. could target those locations to do arrests. and what advocates say is this will send more people underground. migrants will be afraid to come out and participate in their communities. it could affect how they live, how their children are able to live in a healthy way and it could affect how they interact with police. so if they're victims of crimes, they could be disincentivized from going to places where they could be -- where they could talk and actually be cooperative with law enforcement. >> you know, julia czar, said repeated will we're going after the bad guys. where do you draw the line of who is a bad guy, who is not? convicted criminal, suspected criminal? how do you see this policy of mass deportation actually being implemented? >> yeah, willie. that's interesting because what homan is saying we're going after the bad guys. everything we've reported so far indicate that is a want to get these numbers as high as possible. the very idea they're going to rescind this policy that isn't really thought of that the bad guys are at churches and weddings and funerals and hospitals and schools, but rather if they rescind this they can get the numbers higher. it's also the reason why they're looking at major metropolitan areas and talking to private prison companies to vastly expand i.c.e. detention and looking at the cost of what it could be to deport millions. look at that figure. 967.7 billion. this figure we heard in the first year is far lower than what they would need to do. the numbers

that's what, of course is on people's mind. here on the tucker side, now internally as president of narrative type, air to on has been a long time backer of the syrian rebels and it's widely expected for him to seize this as a moment of opportunity. let's look at how that could panel to this president add one a to support out of your position in syria is one of the big windows from the full flash. i said. so if you could kinda upholstery the rich and say things to the future and same distress and its position in negotiations over able to get a sense of here's how turkey ended up in such a strong position in less than 2 weeks. opposition scientists from the issue of his tie up to here i, shaun group together with talking back rebels, toppled aside through gene. so teen years after his crack down on anti government protest. ignited serious of the rubbish capture of the main northern city of a level. neither took his folder before pushing all the way to the capitals. i must post. it said, august and the 3rd run away. leaving behind the syria, when nearly 1000000 people were massacred, 12000000 uncomfortable had to leave it a joke shed and many associates on my return to revel what a color kutrovitch edwin's government has so far denied any involvement in the rebels operation. but add one has long pushed for the else throughout. besides calling him not a rough and backing up position forces in syria's northwest. it's highly improve the situation at the well 3rd. at this. kane and the speeds observed results at least some sort of uh, uh, vacation reports, or at least 3 nights. so how does tech he benefit from all of this? you can see one way here at the turkish florida with some syrians have gathered with their families, their belongings, suitcases ready to head back home, back to syria. add one can make good on his promise to return many of the free 1000000 syrian refugees. turkey has hosted for more than a decade, anti immigrant sense and then does live here in the country and add on has come under increasing pressure to send people back. this, it sounds like a deal i'm going to damascus now to see my family. i haven't seen them in 14 years, an adult is go now i will see them and they also have to go online. he took all home those like now that outside is gone, god willing we will take them back and decide to get the you know, she doesn't show up is not important. what i'm going to eat. what i'm going to drink is important that i'm going my home. my home is just for you, syria, is it for you? and that's it. add one is also looking for a security benefits. in northwest syria. he's pushing ahead with plans to establish what he calls a security course or so he backed rebels and launched and offensive against scottish fights is trying to sell them from the turkish florida. this has since the local code or civilian sling safety, the offensive also allows to key to push back thirty's fighters and spacing them from strategic positions. and we're going to produce says a c s a which you don't, you don't have use as a security threats june to it seems to be to the p. k. k. b, a power in quinn's don't come without risk to add one in. the longer term concord is not controlled. he is in this higher the i some which is officially considers a to is closed and it remains. i'm clear if to, if he wants to expand his insurance in the area now controlled by the extending influence over then you the capture. it's a tooth res box to the bowl, which is a huge city woods. the mines essentially economic and political events, investments from to mike and turkey's past experience in managing areas under its defect to control the northern syria as being a fraud with changes which we did locate this content and even violence exist. and now it looks like ad on hand has been strengthened twilight, ron and russia have lost regional insulins with their l. i a sub semis, but the political baffled to serious future has yet to be decided. julia there now appears to be a ceasefire between the curtis spiders and syria, and the rebels supported by turkey is that in turkey's interest, as well as the seas for is according to the car dish, s b s groove. who said it was a us mediated initiative to guarantee quote, the security and safety of the civilians in the area. uh but uh, i think the overall security situation there remains voltaggio turkey beg rebels have over the past 2 weeks or so for those kurdish fighters trying to push them away from the turkish border. because on cross sees elements among those curtis groups, as allied with the p k. k, which has waged a decades on insurgency here in turkey. and is considered a terrorist by terrorist group by turkey, but also by the european union. so it remains to be seen, but the violent collections there in the area, according to one hormone, is where i have killed more than 200 people and they have just displaced many. so this is sort of speak a 2nd offensive that has been playing o
