and then, famously, it was renovated in 1936 by architect julia morgan, and much of her work is still there, the lobby, some of the facade treatment is still there, and we'd preserve that, of course. and it was home for both hearst publishing and the examiner for the early part of its life. the printing presses were originally in the lower basement level. they're now begagone, and loca edition has some of the those artifacts from the hearst family, so it's pretty interesting down there to see a little bit of that history. and then, since the 60's, i believe, it's all been converted over to office. the areas that were the examiner, the lower levels were turned into offices. hearst corporation is still there, and then, several other smaller businesses. so the -- converting this building to -- to a hotel would invoke a change of use which requires looking at it as almost a new building, to so i meets many new standards in terms of accessibility. along with that we'd improve some of the environmental conditions, upgrading the windows for sound control for a good night's sleep. generally,

you know, when you're talking about julia morgan buildings, it's historic, where the street view comes from the street back to the house, and therefore, a pole like this would impede a view of an historic building. can you tell me how you evaluate street view from house outward versus street inward in judging whether a street view has been -- will be significantly impacted in the neighborhood. >> when we look at street views, we're looking at it from the perspective of a pedestrian from the sidewalk, so anywhere from five to 7 feet and what their views would look like walking down the street. so from the planning perspective, we would feel that an antenna on the top of a pole would not impede a pedestrian's view down the street. >> so the view from -- from a passing car from the middle of the street or -- >> technically -- >> -- doesn't count? >> it counts, but i imagine it would be significantly less impacted as car -- you know, moving, a lot more quickly on the road, so the antenna or the radio units may not catch their eye. >> you're conjecturing, and not fact. okay. thanks. appreci

our home, 3531 clay street, was designed by architect julia morgan, who also designed the hearst castle and many other sites in the bay area. we as homeowner are held to a higher standard by the san francisco planning department. for example, we cannot alter the front of our home in any way without consultation, time-consuming approval by the planning department. 15 years ago, we did a remodel. we wanted to make this window a little bit bigger, but our architect after a bunch of consultation said it's not worth the time, the energy or the expense. so to me, it seems inconsistent with the spirit of the planning department that we cannot alter the size of a window in the front of our house yet verizon can place an antenna across the street from this julia moran home. my office overlooks 3512 clay street at the particular pole. on many days, i can look at and see as many as 100 people walking, tourists riding bikes or riding those little yellow go cars that we love around town, and they slow down, they pause, they stop, they get out, and they take a picture of this house. we are not oppose
